For just £300.90, you'll be taking the keys to one of the most engaging hot hatchbacks around. Power comes from a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine that pumps out 296bhp, and this is all kept in check with a clever xDrive four-wheel drive system. This latest M135 (which, incidentally, has lost the 'i' in its name to help differentiate it from BMW's electric offerings) has traded its eight-speed auto for a seven-speed twin-clutch semi-auto to deliver quicker shifts. It certainly works – it hurtles to 62mph in under five seconds, while top speed is limited to 155mph. Compared with the pre-facelift M135i, the new M135 has adaptive dampers as standard and the chassis has been stiffened. This means the pocket BMW is very engaging through the bends, plus you can soften the ride should you need a little more comfort around town. It's punchy, refined and returns over 53mpg, claims BMW. The 1 Series may be front-wheel drive these days but it still feels remarkably polished from behind the wheel, plus it's good fun on the right road, thanks to its agile chassis. Aside from the driver thrills, the interior is a nice place to be with high-quality materials and great tech. Trouble is, its efficient hybrid engine, smart interior, upmarket fit-and-finish and respectable character don't come cheap. Until now, that is. Advertisement - Article continues below Scouring the Auto Express Find a Car service, we found is offering the judicious Jazz for three pence more than £200 a month, finally placing it at a similar level to the Renault Clio, Skoda Fabia and Volkswagen Polo. This two-year deal requires a £2,750.33 initial payment, while mileage is capped at 5,000 a year. This can be revised up to 8,000 a year for just under £14.50 a month, though. At the heart of the Jazz is its super-frugal hybrid powertrain. It mates a 1.5-litre petrol engine to two electric motors, meaning it can travel further on electric power than a lot of its rivals. Fuel economy is, unsurprisingly, impressive at over 62mpg, and 120bhp keeps the car feeling quick and zippy, particularly around town. Over the years, every generation of the Jazz has embarrassed its rivals by having more interior space. The same is true of the current car – its tall windows mean visibility is excellent, and the interior is packed with numerous cubbyholes. The pièce de résistance, though, are the famous Magic Seats, which allow the rear seat bases to fold up so you can carry awkwardly shaped items with ease. For £200 a month, you might be expecting the entry-level model, but that's not the case. Here you'll be getting a Jazz in Advance spec, so things like heated front seats and steering wheel, wireless Apple CarPlay, a nine-inch touchscreen, and 16-inch alloys wheels all come as standard. Powering this bargain Qashqai is one of Nissan's efficient 1.3-litre turbocharged mild-hybrid petrol engines. With 138bhp and 240Nm of torque it's a decent enough performer, and the six-speed manual gearbox is pleasant to use. It's an easy car to drive, too, and feels safe and predictable on the move. The latest Qashqai's interior feels solidly made, plus it's easy to get comfortable behind the wheel. Interior space is excellent, with wide-opening rear doors to make loading children and all their stuff just that little bit easier, and boot space is great at 504 litres.
