Anthony Joshua coach finally explains controversial ‘roll the dice' order in Daniel Dubois loss

Anthony Joshua 's coach Ben Davison has finally explained the controversial order to 'roll the dice' in September's defeat by Daniel Dubois. In a packed-out Wembley Stadium, Dubois dropped his fellow Briton four times and sealed a fifth-round stoppage, retaining the IBF heavyweight title in the process. Joshua, 35, has not fought since. While the former champion recovers from elbow surgery and considers shoulder treatment, 27-year-old Dubois is preparing to face unified champion Oleksandr Usyk. That bout will take place on 19 July at Wembley, where Dubois dealt Joshua a brutal KO in the fifth round, after 'AJ''s corner gave a surprising order after the fourth frame. With Joshua having been dropped once in each of the first, third and fourth rounds, many observers felt that the Olympic gold medalist needed to use the fifth round to recover. If successful, Joshua could perhaps have sought a finish later in the fight. Instead, Davison and his fellow cornerman encouraged Joshua to 'roll the dice'. Many fans and pundits interpreted that messaging as Davison and co urging Joshua to take an unnecessary risk. However, Davison has suggested that it was a specific reference to a combination: a double-jab and right uppercut. Responding to an observation made by Dubois's ex-coach Shane McGuigan on commentary, Davison told Talksport: 'It didn't [play out as McGuigan predicted], though. He's saying that Daniel's putting a right hand behind the double. So, he's saying Daniel Dubois throws a double-jab then a right hand. 'He would be 100 per cent correct; Daniel was throwing that throughout the fight. We've asked AJ to throw a double-jab and bring it up the middle. Daniel was defending AJ's right hand by ducking underneath it; therefore, if he's ducking underneath your right hand, the correct adjustment is to let him dip onto the right uppercut. ''Roll the dice' is like... that was something that he'd worked on throughout camp: double-jab, bring it up the middle. Because against [Filip] Hrgovic, again, he was so often – sorry, let me finish... He was regularly getting underneath Hrgovic's right hand. 'Hrgovic then started to throw an uppercut but wasn't bringing his feet in to be close enough to deliver the shot.' Moments before Dubois landed the knockout blow, Joshua appeared to stun the younger boxer, before seemingly over-committing to an attempt to finish the fight. In the ensuing moment, Dubois dropped Joshua for the final time, rendering AJ unable to beat the referee's count. Dubois was scheduled to defend the IBF belt against Joseph Parker in February but withdrew on two days' notice, citing illness. Parker went on to knock out Martin Bakole in two rounds. While Parker's next move is unclear, as is Joshua's, Dubois now bids for revenge against Usyk, who recovered from a controversial low blow to stop him in 2023. Dubois's team appealed the result, saying his low blow was in fact a legal body shot, but the appeal failed. Joshua has been linked with numerous potential opponents since losing to Dubois. A long-awaited fight against Tyson Fury has been mooted, although the latter claimed in January that he has retired from boxing – not for the first time. Meanwhile, a rematch with old rival Dillian Whyte was recently mentioned, only for Whyte to sign to face Moses Itauma.

Summer sport highlights and TV deals from DAZN, Sky and TNT

The FIFA Club World Cup, Silverstone Grand Prix and Usyk vs Dubois 2 are among the sporting highlights this summer While many football fans are eagerly awaiting the start of the 2025/26 football season, there's plenty of other sporting events to tuck into this summer. Leading the pack is the FIFA Club World Cup, with the new-and-improved competition now in full swing. 32 of the world's best clubs are in the USA for the tournament, including Man City, Chelsea, Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. Off the pitch, there's more must-see sporting events on the way in July, including the British Grand Prix at Silverstone, the Tour de France and the hotly-anticipated rematch between Oleksandr Usyk and Daniel Dubois. But as all of this sporting action is spread across a handful of broadcasters in the UK, it can be tricky to decide which subscription best suits our sporting tastes. With this, we've taken a look at a selection of major sports broadcasters including DAZN, Sky Sports and TNT Sports, plus the best deals currently up for grabs. So read on for some of the highlights on the way this summer and the best deals to watch each one for less. DAZN While many sports fans associate DAZN with boxing, it's actually home to a whole lot more. Across June and July, the broadcaster is airing every game from the FIFA Club World Cup live from the USA. Fans can stream every fixture for free by setting up a free DAZN account, which also includes a host of documentaries, features and clips from previous tournaments. DAZN offers a paid Premium subscription for fans to stream in HDR picture quality and Dolby 5.1 Surround Sound, with fewer adverts and full access to the rest of the DAZN platform. Prices for DAZN Premium currently start at £9.99 for an annual plan, or £19.99 for the 30-day rolling Flex account. The DAZN App can be accessed on smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, games consoles, streaming devices and any device with a web browser. Watch the Club World Cup free on DAZN £0 DAZN Get DAZN here Product Description Aside from football, DAZN's boxing calendar includes Jake Paul vs Chavez Jr (June 28), Catterall vs Eubank (July 5) and Oleksandr Usyk vs Daniel Dubois 2 (July 19). However, keep in mind that select fights will only be available with pay-per-view and are not included in a standard DAZN subscription. In our review of the DAZN platform, we found the app occasionally slow to respond on an iPhone 13, but performs smoothly when content is up-and-running, while streaming on a TV presented no issues. Sky Sports Even though we're between Premier League and EFL seasons, Sky Sports has plenty to tempt sports fans ahead of the new campaign kicking off in August. Sky is increasing its Premier League coverage from the 2025/26 season, with a 'record minimum' of 215 matches broadcast live, which it claims is more than any other broadcaster. These are all available with Sky's flagship TV and sports package, the Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle, for £35 per month. This provides access to every fixture broadcast on Sky Sports, including more than 140 at weekends, evening matches on Fridays and Mondays and three midweek rounds, plus the return of the festive round of fixtures. Signing up for a 24-month Sky Sports package secures access to both the 2025/26 and 2026/27 Premier League and EFL seasons. It includes nine dedicated Sky Sports channels, such as Golf, Tennis, Cricket and F1, meaning members can catch every practice, qualifier and race from the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 3-6. It also includes more than 100 regular channels, alongside free Netflix and Discovery+ subscriptions. Perhaps the main downside with Sky is its 24-month contract length, which may be offputting for those not looking to make a long-term commitment. If this is the case, Sky also offers a 30-day rolling plan for £43 per month, which provides flexibility for a higher monthly cost. Existing Sky customers can add Sky Sports to their package for £22 per month. Sky Sports is also included with Virgin Media's £59.99 per month Bigger Combo bundle + Sports, which justifies its higher price tag with the inclusion of 362Mbps broadband and a shorter 18-month term. TNT Sports The broadcaster formally known as BT Sport is available as part of a Discovery+ Premium subscription here in the UK. Its coverage is spread across four TV channels and up to six digital or red-button channels, plus Eurosport 1 and 2. TNT broadcasts a range of sports to suit any fan, including football, cycling, tennis, snooker, Premiership Rugby, MotoGP, boxing, UFC and more. Events to watch this month include the remaining NBA finals games, with the Tour de France starting on July 5. There's also the Bennetts British Superbikes and World Superbikes, plus the Grand Slam Track events from Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. Looking further ahead, TNT Sports will once again broadcast select fixtures in the upcoming seasons of the Premier League, UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and UEFA Conference League. This is all available with a Discovery+ Premium subscription for £30.99 on a rolling monthly basis through Discovery+ or Amazon's Discovery+ Prime Video channel. TNT Sports can also be added to new or existing Sky and Virgin packages for £20 and £18 respectively. TNT Sports has attracted criticism for its commentary on certain sports, with some users taking to Trustpilot to vent their frustrations. One tennis fan found the Men's and Ladies French finals commentary 'dreadful'. A football fan said: 'If TNT Sports football producers believe commenters shouting and screaming over each other enhances the experience, so be it. Most people I talk to either watch with sound off or now just don't tune in. However, other fans were more positive, as one said: 'Giving five stars for Ally McCoist's match commentary. He's brilliant.'

Oleksandr Usyk shows true colours by admitting one fighter is better than him

The Ukrainian is widely regarded as one of the best fighters of his generation - but has surprisingly named the one fighter who is currently better than him Oleksandr Usyk has admitted Terence Crawford is the current pound-for-pound No.1 in the sport. The Ukrainian is widely regarded as one of the best heavyweight boxers of this generation. Prior to making his professional debut, it was evident that the 38-year-old was destined for big things in the sport after winning the World Championships in 2011 before winning Olympic gold a year later in London. ‌ In 2013, Usyk finally turned pro and was quick to become a real household name in the sport. Within three years, the Ukrainian was already a world champion. That said, he was hungry for more. Five years after turning pro, the 'Cat' became an undisputed cruiserweight champion defeating Murat Gassiev on points. ‌ Usyk made the decision to move up to heavyweight in 2019 and scored impressive victories over Chazz Witherspoon and Derek Chisora. In just his third fight at the aforementioned weight class, he became a world champion after defeating Anthony Joshua. He then beat the Brit for a second time before defeating Daniel Dubois. Last May, the 38-year-old became a two-division undisputed champion after beating Tyson Fury on points. The Ukrainian would go on to beat the 'Gypsy King' for a second time back in December. Despite his accomplishments, Usyk was quick to praise Crawford, telling DAZN: 'For me, pound-for-pound No.1 is Terence Crawford. I like this man, he's a great fighter. For me, maybe I'm No. 17.' Usyk's comments showed his real colours - proving that he really is all class both in and outside of the ring. Crawford won all the titles at super-lightweight before repeating the breathtaking achievement at welterweight in July 2023 when he toppled Errol Spence. He has since moved up again to claim another title at 154lbs and, in September, he faces the toughest test of his glittering career so far. On September 13, he will take on Canelo Alvarez for the undisputed super-middleweight titles. Crawford will be looking to keep his perfect record intact, but faces a tough ask against the multi-weight ruler. As for Usyk, the Ukrainian is preparing for his return to competitive action. The 38-year-old is scheduled to rematch Dubois next month at Wembley Stadium for the undisputed heavyweight world titles. The pair first met back in 2023 - with the Ukrainian going on to stop the Brit towards the back end of the contest. However, the fight was not without drama after Usyk was sent crashing to the canvas following a shot to the body that was eventually deemed a low blow - much to the frustration of Dubois' team.

Dave Allen names the former heavyweight champion he would like to fight

Heavyweight Dave Allen has named the former champion he would like to face next, saying that he thinks he could beat former WBC champion Deontay Wilder. Speaking on TalkSport, Allen said that he thought Wilder, 43-4-1 (42), was a good stylistic match for him. He added that he thought he could beat Wilder. Wilder, at present, is slated to fight Tyrrell Anthony Herndon on 27 June in Wichita, Kansas. Allen, 24-7-2 (19), said: 'When I talk about Deontay Wilder, I smile. I think, stylistically, he's a good match for me. I can beat him. I think beating Deontay Wilder – I'd be a very, very happy man.' After beating Johnny Fisher in five rounds in their May rematch, Allen is currently riding a career high. He came into the May fight after losing a controversial split decision to Fisher in their December bout. A stalwart of the scene, Allen has spent recent years losing to the top-placed heavyweights – Frazer Clarke, David Price, Luis Ortiz, Dillian Whyte – while registering come-from-behind underdog victories against the likes of Lucas Browne. Elsewhere in the interview, Allen said that he was aware of his limitations as a boxer but reiterated that he had the skills and the physical ability to beat Wilder. One of his past issues, he said, was a lack of discipline early in his career, saying that it was an attribute he lacked that has kept him from the top echelons in the sport. He said: 'I've sparred the best heavyweights in the world in Usyk and Fury. And I'm not that good, and that's fine. I accepted that a long time ago. Deontay Wilder isn't what he was. Deontay Wilder is beatable now. I'm realistic. I'm very realistic. I know what I can and can't do.' He went on: 'On the back of that, I'm training hard, and I can't get hurt. That's the most-important thing. I can earn a lot of money and get out of boxing while healthy. I'm training hard and I'm realistic. That's what matters to me.' Should a Wilder fight not emerge, Allen said that he would like to fight for the British title. That, he said, was always his ambition. He added: 'My granddad was a big boxing fan, and my dad had thirty pro fights but never won the British title. My grandmother always said to me, 'Win the British title; that would mean everything to us.' Chisora is another dream fight, but the British title would be everything.' Allen said that he should be fighting again in September in Sheffield, although he did not name a specific date or opponent. However, he did say that he would headline the bout.
