TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees on Monday appointed Peter J. Mohler as the next president of the University of Alabama. Mohler comes to the role from Ohio State University where he served as executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge and as chief scientific officer of the Wexner Medical Center. He also served as Ohio State's acting president in 2023.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (AP) — The University of Alabama System Board of Trustees on Monday appointed Peter J. Mohler as the next president of the University of Alabama. Mohler comes to the role from Ohio State University where he served as executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge and as chief scientific officer of the Wexner Medical Center. He also served as Ohio State's acting president in 2023. He will assume the role at the University of Alabama on July 21. He will be the university's 30th president. Mohler will replace President Stuart R. Bell, who announced his retirement in January. 'Dr. Mohler is uniquely equipped to build upon The University of Alabama's strong foundation and lead this institution into an even brighter future,' UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant said in a statement about the selection. 'He is a champion for the power of public higher education to transform lives and communities through teaching, research and service, and he will advance our flagship mission through his bold, student-centered and visionary leadership.' Mohler joined Ohio State in 2011 as the director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute and subsequently served as chair of the department of physiology and cell biology, vice dean of research in the College of Medicine, and vice president for research for the university. Mohler has a bachelor's degree in biology from Wake Forest University and a doctorate in cell and molecular physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served on the faculty at Vanderbilt University and the University of Iowa.

Mohler to become the 30th president of the University of Alabama, the state's flagship university. He will begin his appointment on July 21, succeeding Stuart Bell, who has been the university's president since 2015. Mohler currently is the executive vice president for research, innovation and knowledge at The Ohio State University and also the chief scientific officer of OSU's Wexner Medical Center. Prior to that, he served for a period as Ohio State's acting president in 2023. 'Dr. Mohler is uniquely equipped to build upon the University of Alabama's strong foundation and lead this institution into an even brighter future,' said UA System Chancellor Sid J. Trant, in a university news release. 'He is a champion for the power of public higher education to transform lives and communities through teaching, research and service, and he will advance our flagship mission through his bold, student-centered and visionary leadership,' added Trant. Mohler is credited with being an advocate for increased educational access and student success, and for supporting programs that promoted stronger graduation outcomes. Mohler earned his bachelor's degree in biology from Wake Forest University and his doctorate in cell and molecular physiology from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received a postdoctoral fellowship in the Howard Hughes Medical Institute at Duke University before serving as a faculty member at Vanderbilt University and then later the University of Iowa. A prolific researcher, Mohler has published more than 275 peer-reviewed articles in journals such as Nature, Cell, Nature Medicine, and the New England Journal of Medicine. His research program has been focused on exploring the genetic and cellular mechanisms underlying abnormal heart rhythms and heart failure and developing new diagnostics and therapies for heart disease. Among his many awards, Mohler has been named a Pew Scholar, an Outstanding Investigator of the American Heart Association and an NIH National Heart Lung and Blood Institute Outstanding Investigator. He also has served on the editorial boards of several academic journals. At Ohio State since 2011, Mohler held a number of leadership positions. He served as the director of the Dorothy M. Davis Heart and Lung Research Institute, chair of the department of physiology and cell biology, vice dean of research in the College of Medicine, and vice president for research for the university. Mohler said it was 'a tremendous honor' to be chosen as the next president of the University of Alabama. 'I am deeply grateful to the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees for the opportunity to serve this institution and further its tradition of excellence. University of Alabama appears set to name 30th president
The search for a new University of Alabama president appears to have reached a conclusion. According to an email from the UA System, the board of trustees will meet June 16 to consider the appointment of UA's new president. The email, sent June 15, says a special called meeting will be held at 1:30 p.m. in the Catherine and Pettus Randall Welcome Center Theater on the UA campus. More: Search committee lists qualities University of Alabama's next president needs The agenda features one item — "consideration of appointment of 30th president at the University ofAlabama" — but does not include the name of the prospective new UA president. In January, current UA President Stuart Bell announced his plans to step down in mid-summer after leading the Tuscaloosa campus for 10 years. Shortly after Bell's announcement, the UA Presidential Search Advisory Committee was formed. The committee was led by University of Alabama System Trustee Karen P. Brooks, a Tuscaloosa native, and included UA faculty, staff, students, alumni and community members, along with other trustees and UA system leaders. Academic Search, a company with more than four decades' experience in higher education recruitment, was hired to help the search committee. The company also assisted UA in the of Bell and former president Robert E. Witt. The search committee held a series of listening sessions in late January and early February via Zoom, with more than 500 faculty, staff, students, alumni and Tuscaloosa community members participating. The goal of the listening sessions was to find out what kind of characteristics, qualifications and credentials they wanted to see in UA's next leader. In March, the search committee released 14 qualities desired in UA's next president, which included a record of significant leadership, sterling character and the ability to help guide a successful athletics program. Class of 2025: University of Alabama to hold summer graduation
More than 1,200 students will become University of Alabama graduates during the summer commencement ceremony. The ceremony is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Aug. 2 at Coleman Coliseum on the UA campus. About 750 students are expected to participate in the ceremony. Unlike the fall and spring graduation exercises, which are spread out over a weekend, the summer commencement will be a single ceremony. The ceremony will include graduates from the Capstone College of Nursing, the College of Arts and Sciences, the College of Communication and Information Sciences, the College of Community Health Sciences, the College of Education, the College of Engineering, the College of Human Environmental Sciences, the Culverhouse College of Business, the School of Law and the School of Social Work. UA's online calendar lists Dec. 13 as the date for fall commencement.
