More Than 40,000 Pounds of Shrimp Recalled Over Potential Health Risk

If you're a frequent consumer of seafood, it might be time to check what's in your fridge. According to a statement issued by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 44,550 pounds of Bornstein Seafoods' Cooked and Peeled Ready-to-Eat Coldwater Shrimp Meat have been recalled due to the potential contamination of Listeria monocytogenes, the bacteria that causes Listeria. The product was distributed in states like California, Oregon, Washington, and British Columbia (Canada), and may have been further distributed nationwide. Bornstein Seafoods, located in Bellingham, Washington, urges consumers to return the product immediately and receive a full refund. Listeria monocytogenes, the organism that causes Listeria, can sometimes cause fatal infections in young children, elderly people, pregnant women, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals might experience common symptoms such as fever, headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. No illnesses have been reported to date. To ensure you haven't purchased the affected products, read on for the full product listing—along with their Universal Product Code (UPC) and Lot number. Below, we've broken down everything you need to know about the August Egg Company recall. On June 6, 2025, of 1,700,000 dozen brown eggs in collaboration with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This wide-ranging recall encompasses 29 different egg products from at least nine different distributors, including Walmart, Save Mart, FoodMaxx, Lucky, Smart & Final, Safeway, Raleys, Food 4 Less and Ralphs. While each recalled product has a different Universal Product Code (UPC), the carton will also contain one of two plant codes: P-6562 or CA-5330 — which can be used to help identify a recalled batch. Arizona California Illinois Indiana Nebraska New Mexico Nevada Washington Wyoming The recall stems from a potential Salmonella contamination at August Egg Company's California plant. 'It is important to know that when our processing plant identified this concern, we immediately began diverting all eggs from the plant to an egg-breaking facility, which pasteurizes the eggs and kills any pathogens," said the August Egg Company in a statement. Salmonella is a bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract, often causing diarrhea, fever, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and chills. In severe cases, Salmonella can also lead to death. The infection is most commonly spread through contaminated food or water. In the case of eggs, infected chickens may pass on Salmonella before the shell of their egg is formed, meaning the shell is not able to protect against the disease. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there has been 79 cases of illnesses, 21 of which resulted in hospitalization. To confirm whether or not you have one of the recalled products, refer to our list above that names the 29 egg items being revoked. If you have one of the items on the list, check the plant number and UPC, located on the side of the carton. The recalled eggs will have a plant number of P-6562 or CA-5330. UPC codes can be referenced using the above list. You'll also want to pay attention to the sell-by date. Recalled eggs distributed at Walmart will have a sell-by date between March 4, 2025, and June 19, 2025. Eggs from the eight other named distributors will have a sell-by date between March 4, 2025, and June 4, 2025. After confirming the noted information, August Egg Company is advising customers to return the eggs to their place of purchase for a full refund. There are steps to follow if you do have these products in your home. According to here is what you should do. Don't panic: The majority of food recalls are not directly linked to an outbreak of foodborne illness. Instead, many recalls are initiated due to the potential risk of contamination in the food product. In such cases, food manufacturers often issue a recall as a preventive measure to safeguard consumers. Don't eat the food or consume the drug: To ensure your safety, refrain from consuming any recalled food products. Always prioritize caution over convenience. Additionally, please refrain from donating the recalled food to food banks or providing it to your pets, as they are also susceptible to food poisoning. Don't open the food: To prevent foodborne illnesses, refrain from opening and inspecting food. Bacteria and viruses responsible for such illnesses are invisible, odorless, and tasteless. If you do handle the product, ensure you thoroughly cleanse your hands with warm water and soap for 20 seconds afterward. Check the recall notice to find out what to do with the food: Upon a food product recall by a manufacturer, specific instructions are provided regarding the product's handling. These instructions generally entail one of the following actions: Return the product to the original store of purchase for a refund. Safely dispose of the product to prevent consumption by humans or animals, particularly if the product has been opened. Salmonella is a type of bacteria that can cause an infection called salmonellosis. It is commonly found in contaminated food or water, particularly in raw or undercooked meat, poultry, eggs, and sometimes fruits and vegetables. People infected with salmonella typically experience symptoms such as diarrhea, fever, abdominal cramps and vomiting, usually within six hours to six days after exposure. Healthy people infected with salmonella usually experience several symptoms, such as fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain, the federal agency said. In rare cases, salmonella can get into the bloodstream and produce more severe illnesses like arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis. Most healthy people recover without treatment, but severe cases can occur, especially in young children, elderly people and those with weakened immune systems. In such cases, hospitalization and antibiotics may be required. Preventing salmonella infection involves proper food handling, cooking and hygiene practices. Here are food safety guidelines from the CDC to follow: Wash your hands, utensils, and surfaces often. Keep food that won't be cooked separate from raw meat, poultry and seafood. Use a food thermometer to make sure you have cooked your food to a temperature high enough to kill germs. Refrigerate perishable food (food that goes bad) within two hours. If the food is exposed to temperatures above 90° (such as in a hot car or at a picnic), refrigerate it within one hour. Thaw food in the refrigerator, not on the counter. -USA TODAY Network reporter Gabe Hauari contributed to this report. Pumpkin seeds recalled across Canada over salmonella concerns

Pumpkin seeds are being recalled across the country over possible salmonella contamination, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency says. There haven't been any reported illnesses linked to the seeds, which were pulled from shelves after a recall was issued in another country, the CFIA said in an online notice. The recall concerns two types of pumpkin seeds: Organic Traditions Jumbo Pumpkin Seeds, 227 with the Universal Product Code 6 27733 00175 5 Organic Traditions Jumbo Pumpkin Seeds, 454 g with the UPC 6 27733 00180 9 Consumers shouldn't eat, serve, use, sell or distribute the affected products, the agency said, adding the seeds should be thrown out or returned to where they were purchased. ARTICLE CONTINUES BELOW 'Food contaminated with salmonella may not look or smell spoiled but can still make you sick,' CFIA said, adding there can be serious or deadly consequences for children, pregnant women, and elderly and immunocompromised people. Short-term symptoms for healthy people include a fever, headache, vomiting, nausea, abdominal cramps and diarrhea, while severe arthritis could be a long-term complication, the agency added. If you think you're sick after consuming a recalled product, contact your health-care provider, CFIA said. CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation and making the seeds have been pulled from shelves, the agency said.
