Germany not planning strategic gas reserve, economy ministry says
FRANKFURT, June 17 (Reuters) - Germany is not planning to set up a national gas reserve as its recent legislation changing required filling levels for the coming winters will encourage the private sector to ensure supply security, an economy ministry spokesperson said on Tuesday. Since the energy crisis following Russia's invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European Union countries have turned to increased storage to protect against supply disruption. Germany is mainland Europe's biggest gas consumer and last month German pipeline lobby group FNB proposed a new approach to gas storage, including a permanent national reserve. "There are currently no considerations by the economy ministry pertaining to this (a strategy storage)," the spokesperson said in a written reply to an enquiry by Reuters, adding supply was secure overall. Bloomberg reported on Tuesday that Germany was looking at whether to build up a strategic store of gas, citing unnamed sources. Germany's new coalition government aligned domestic rules with anticipated changes to European Union regulations that require gas storage facilities to be 80% filled by November 1 to ensure enough supply for the winter, giving more flexibility than the EU's previous 90% capacity filling requirement, among a range of other measures. German utilities operating gas storage facilities include Uniper ( opens new tab, the SEFE group, VNG Gasspeicher and RWE ( opens new tab. The German economy ministry is mindful that any additional state moves could drive up the costs for consumers, the spokesperson said. German gas stockpiles last stood at 45.8% vis-a-vis the EU's 53.8%, data from storage group GIE showed. The metric was well down from 76.8% a year ago.

European energy giant to build wind farm in Scotland
One of two German firms involved in the deal, Uniper is owned by the state. It said it has taken the decision to start the construction phase of its first wind farm scheme in East Ayrshire. Renewable energy will be produced by 2028. (Image: Uniper) The project has been developed jointly with co-development partner Energiekontor UK Ltd, and Uniper will start the construction process as its sole owner. Once operational, the wind farm will have seven turbines and a generation capacity of 46.2 megawatts. Construction of the project is expected to start in 2027 with power generation due to start in 2028. The wind farm was granted initial planning consent by the local planning authority in 2022, with a modified application in 2024, following the submission of plans by Energiekontor UK Ltd. READ MORE: Alex Smethers, Uniper head of renewables UK, said: 'We are extremely pleased to be able to announce our first wind farm project working in partnership with Energiekontor. 'Uniper has 230 megawatts of solar projects under development across Europe. We are committed to increasing our renewable energy portfolio and are determined to help meet our target to accelerate the energy transition by making our business carbon neutral by 2040." Peter Szabo, chief executive of Energiekontor AG, said: 'We are particularly pleased to have successfully led this first joint project with Uniper to this important milestone. This project marks another valuable addition to the UK's growing renewable energy landscape, and we are delighted that this project is now entering the next phase with Uniper.'

GE Vernova to upgrade gas turbine units for Uniper in UK
International energy provider Uniper, based in Dusseldorf, Germany, is collaborating with GE Vernova to upgrade three GT26 gas turbines at the Grain power station in Kent, in the southeast of England. The GT26 high efficiency (HE) upgrade aims to enhance efficiency and power output, aligning with Uniper's goal to decarbonise its fleet by reducing carbon intensity at the plant. Uniper power station manager for Enfield, Grain and Taylors Lane Bill Cliff stated: 'Increasing efficiency and the ability to maintain high availability, while lowering operational and maintenance costs, is crucial for the long-term success of Grain power station. 'We worked with GE Vernova on the validation of GE Vernova's GT26 HE upgrade at our Enfield power station, so we already had experience of this technology. Investment in our assets to reduce their carbon intensity, increase capacity and maintain reliability for security of supply is key for both Grain and Enfield power stations.' At the Enfield plant, the modernisation project has enhanced performance and increased the maintenance interval of the combined cycle gas turbine. GE Vernova's previous testing of the GT26 HE technology showed a 25MW increase in plant output per unit, a 1% efficiency increase in part load and a 1.8% baseload efficiency increase, resulting in up to $1m fuel savings per unit annually and extended maintenance intervals up to 32,000 hours. GE Vernova's gas power business in Europe, the Middle East and Africa president and CEO Joseph Anis stated: 'For years, GE Vernova and Uniper have worked together to build and maintain power plants using leading technologies, and this upgrade marks another example of our successful cooperation. 'This upgrade is expected to revitalise Uniper's Grain power plant and to increase its reliability and availability in the Great Britain generation landscape, supporting its long-term profitability and viability. GE Vernova is well-positioned to provide services and upgrade solutions as customers continue to invest in their fleets to meet rising electricity demand and improve performance.' By the end of March 2025, the GT26 HE fleet had achieved more than 100,000 operating hours, with 15 units sold and eight units in operation. This milestone underscores the GT26 HE upgrade's performance and reliability. In May 2025, GE Vernova secured an order for five 7H-Class gas turbines from Técnicas Reunidas and Orascom Construction for the Qurayyah independent power plant (QIPP) expansion project, a 3GW combined cycle gas-fired power plant in Saudi Arabia's Eastern Province.
