Real Madrid forward Mbappe in hospital

New York, June 19 (UNI) Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe is in hospital with gastroenteritis after missing their Club World Cup opener against Al-Hilal. The France captain, 26, missed training on Tuesday with a fever and did not play in Wednesday's 1-1 draw against the Saudi Arabian side. A Real statement on Thursday said Mbappe has "an acute case of gastroenteritis" and was admitted to hospital for "a series of tests". Gastroenteritis is an infection in the gut which can cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Real's next game is against Pachuca on Sunday at 20:00 BST. There is no indication whether Mbappe could be available for the game, according to a BBC news. Mbappe scored 43 goals in 56 games in all competitions for Real in his first season after joining on a free transfer from Paris St-Germain. This is Real's first competition under Xabi Alonso, who replaced Carlo Ancelotti as manager at the end of the La Liga season. Real won the Uefa Super Cup and Fifa Intercontinental Cup in Mbappe's first season in Spanish football. UNI BM

Mbappe admitted to hospital with acute gastroenteritis

PA Media/DPA London Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe has been admitted to hospital with 'acute gastroenteritis', the Spanish giants have revealed. The 26-year-old France international missed Wednesday night's 1-1 Club World Cup draw with Al Hilal through illness, with head coach Xabi Alonso revealing he had a fever. Now the club has confirmed the severity of the illness with the player undergoing tests in a bid to determine his treatment. A statement on Madrid's official website said: 'Our player Kylian Mbappe is suffering from an acute case of gastroenteritis and has been admitted to hospital in order to undergo a series of tests and follow the appropriate course of treatment.' Alonso's men are due to play their second Group H fixture against Mexican side CF Pachuca in Charlotte on Sunday. They sit second in their group after the opening round of fixtures, two points behind Red Bull Salzburg, who beat Pachuca 2-1 in Cincinnati during the early hours of Thursday morning. Depending on how Mbappe responds to treatment, he is likely to miss that game but could potentially return for Real's final group game against RB Salzburg on 26 June.

Five things to look out for as Club World Cup kicks off

PHOTO: AFP Five things to look out for as Club World Cup kicks off ATLANTA – Despite concerns over ticket sales and player fatigue, Fifa's new expanded Club World Cup will throw up several intriguing storylines when it kicks off on June 14 (June 15, Singapore time). Here are five things to look out for on the pitch as teams compete to conquer the world and claim their share of US$1 billion (S$1.3 billion) in prize money. 1. Messi back in the spotlight Former Barcelona great Lionel Messi has spent the last two seasons at MLS side Inter Miami but the Club World Cup pits him against European opposition once again. The 37-year-old still possesses supreme quality but there are question marks over whether he and former top stars Luis Suarez, Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets can seriously compete against the cream of the crop. Miami face Porto in their second group match in Atlanta, a team Messi has faced once before, beating them with Barca in the Uefa Super Cup back in 2011. If he nets at the tournament, Messi would become the oldest-ever Club World Cup scorer, while both he and Suarez trail the competition's all-time top scorer, Cristiano Ronaldo, by two goals. 2. A new stage for Doue Paris Saint-Germain's 5-0 Champions League final romp over Inter Milan was inspired by thrilling forward Desire Doue, who turned 20 earlier in June. His spectacular burst into the limelight over the past few months means he is one of the players to watch this summer at the Club World Cup. He struck twice in the final against Inter as well as setting up another goal and drew comparisons to Spanish starlet Lamine Yamal, who will not be playing this summer as Barcelona did not qualify. PSG's opening clash against Atletico Madrid at the Rose Bowl in Los Angeles immediately gives Doue another stage to shine on as the world at large continues to discover his immense talent. 3. Revamped City Pep Guardiola's Manchester City endured a poor season by their lofty standards and immediately took action in the special transfer window to bolster their squad for the Club World Cup. The Abu Dhabi-owned club have already splashed more than £100 million (S$174 million) on Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki. With Rodri also returning to fitness after injury, City are hoping they can step up their game significantly. French 21-year-old attacking midfielder Cherki is an exciting talent looking to show his quality at the top level. 'I really believe he can become a world-class player with our support and direction,' said City's director of football Hugo Viana. 4. South American threat While Europe's elite are at the end of a long, hard season, South American clubs are midway through their campaigns and will be energised. They have long revered the competition to a far greater degree than European sides, as it represents the chance to face the very best teams in the world. Fans who do not regularly follow South American football can look forward to discovering some of the most exciting emerging talents in the world. River Plate's Argentine playmaker Franco Mastantuono will join Real Madrid after the tournament, while Chelsea-bound striker Estevao Willian is hoping to end his time at Brazilian side Palmeiras with a bang. 5. Atletico hunger Atletico Madrid ended the season trophyless despite looking like potential contenders in Spain and Europe. Diego Simeone's side are proud of having reached the tournament ahead of La Liga rivals Barcelona and the coach has not hidden his desire to succeed this summer. 'I hope we can advance in the Club World Cup and lead Atletico Madrid to a privileged position,' he said. Atletico have not won a single trophy since lifting La Liga in 2021 and their last success outside of Spanish football came in 2018 with Europa League and Uefa Super Cup wins. Their elimination by Real in the Champions League after Julian Alvarez's controversial 'double-touch' penalty was disallowed sent them into a spiral, which they only managed to shake off in the final weeks of the season, after their chances of success had vanished. Tottenham qualify for Uefa competition no English team has ever won – but may end up not playing in it

TOTTENHAM have qualified for the Uefa–Conmebol Club Challenge by winning the Europa League last month. But due to a hectic schedule, the North Londoners may not have time to play it. 3 Spurs ended their 17-year trophy drought by winning the Europa League last month. Their triumph will see them enter the Uefa Super Cup in August. Tottenham will head to Udine in Italy to face Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain on August 13 in a bid to earn more silverware. While the Super Cup is a well-known competition, previously won by several English clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United and Chelsea, not so much is known about the Uefa–Conmebol Club Challenge. The revamped competition was launched two years as a follow-up to the previous Supercopa Euroamericana. It sees the Europa League winners go up against the champions of its South American counterpart, the Copa Sudamericana. In 2023, perennial Europa League winners Sevilla fittingly lifted its inaugural edition following a penalty shootout win over Independiente del Valle at the Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan. The game did not take place last year, as Atalanta and Ecuadorian side Liga de Quito could not arrange a date. BEST ONLINE CASINOS - TOP SITES IN THE UK 3 This year's Copa Sudamericana winners were Argentine side Racing Club. Their club president is former Inter Milan star Diego Milito, who reportedly wants to set up a date with Spurs. Reports in Argentina suggest that a game could be put on in their country or the US. But according to Uefa chiefs feel that it will be difficult to find a slot in which to fit the game in. Tottenham have already confirmed three pre-season friendlies set to take place in three different countries. The Lilywhites will face rivals Arsenal in a controversial "friendly" match in Hong Kong on July 31. They will then head to South Korea, where they will battle Newcastle United in Seoul. From there they will head to Munich for their third pre-season friendly with Bayern since Harry Kane 's move to Bavaria, which will take place on August 7. Thomas Frank is likely to be the man in the Spurs dugout, following Ange Postecoglou 's sacking last Friday. SunSport revealed last night that the Dane has agreed to take over following talks over the weekend. Frank, 51, wants to leave Brentford for Tottenham, while taking members of his backroom staff with him. Spurs are currently advancing in talks over the Bees' compensation package. 3
