New AI-cyber faculty to drive TVET

ARMING students with skills in their respective fields is no longer enough in technical and vocational education and training (TVET). What is increasingly vital is preparing them for the future through training in artificial intelligence (AI) and cybersecurity. That is the mission Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) has undertaken with the recent inauguration of its Faculty of Artificial Intelligence and Cybersecurity (FAIX). The launch of the initiative – the latest under the National TVET 2025 agenda – was officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony, held at the Melaka International Trade Centre on June 12. UTeM vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said FAIX has been equipped with 13 state-of-the-art laboratories that allow students and researchers to explore advanced technologies in a conducive and competitive environment. 'Some 1,040 local students are expected to form the inaugural intake in October, marking a significant start to the faculty's official operations,' she said in a press release. She added that the university's role is not limited to supporting the latest national TVET agenda through academic, research and innovation efforts in the fields of AI and cybersecurity alone. 'UTeM also serves as a backbone for Malaysia in producing skilled professional talent through technology-based training under a comprehensive and adaptive TVET approach. 'The establishment of FAIX further strengthens the importance of applied AI across various disciplines, including engineering, business, automation, and smart systems. 'This cross-disciplinary approach is key to delivering comprehensive, sustainable and high-value technology solutions to both industry and the nation,' she said. Noting that AI and cybersecurity are essential – and no longer optional – fields in today's digital era, she added that FAIX serves as a national reference centre and a hub for research and innovation in applied AI and cybersecurity, in line with industry needs and the country's aspirations. 'The launch of FAIX marks UTeM's commitment to being a pioneer in developing high-tech TVET talent and in becoming a relevant, responsive and proactive technical higher education institution prepared for the future,' she said. Also present at the National TVET Day 2025 Opening Ceremony were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Seri Ab Rauf Yusoh, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, and Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek.

Perak aim to be among top three at Archery Championship
IPOH: Perak are aiming for a top-three finish at the 2025 National Traditional Archery Championship to be held at Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) this weekend. State Education, Higher Education, Youth and Sports Committee chairman Khairudin Abu Hanipah said a total of 43 participants comprising adults and children from the Perak Archery Association will be taking part in the two-day championship beginning Saturday (May 31). 'We have high hopes of achieving success in this championship because in the previous edition, we finished in fifth place. 'This target was set after we sought to improve that standing through preparations, training, and selection processes that have been conducted regularly by the association,' he told Bernama. The third edition of this national championship is expected to involve the participation of more than 700 traditional archers from across the country.

PACE Institute signs MoU with Malaysian university UTeM to boost academic collaboration
Ongole-based private college PACE Institute of Technology and Sciences has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) to promote academic and research collaboration. The MoU was signed at a ceremony held at UTeM in Malaysia on Wednesday. PACE Secretary Dr. Sridhar Maddisetty and Principal Dr. G.V.K. Murthy represented PACE and were warmly received by Vice Chancellor Dr. Massila Binti Kamalrudin, Dean Dr. Muhammad Hafidz Fazli Bin, and senior lecturer Dr. Warusia Yassin. Award is recognition of UTeM's efforts to drive education excellence, says VC
MELAKA: Universiti Teknikal Malaysia Melaka (UTeM) will continue to affirm its excellence as a leading technical higher education institution, says its vice-chancellor. Prof Datuk Dr Massila Kamalrudin said UTeM remains committed to empowering students' potential through high-innovation learning methods, strengthening its impactful research ecosystem, and broadening access to future technologies and skills. She said that these initiatives are ultimately aimed at producing holistic, highly competent graduates capable of competing on a global stage. Massila made this comment in a statement to The Star after UTeM was named the recipient of the National Education Innovation Award at the Empowering Education Summit 2025, held at a prominent hotel in Penang. The prestigious award was presented by the Chief Minister of Penang, Chow Kon Yeow and was witnessed by the Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek on Monday (April 21). Accepting the award on behalf of UTeM was Prof Dr Zulkifilie Ibrahim, deputy vice-chancellor (academic and international) who represented Massila. Massila said that the award signifies high recognition of UTeM's outstanding efforts in driving education innovation grounded in technology, human values and future-oriented thinking. "This recognition is in line with the core focus of the Higher Education Transformation 2025, particularly in the area of 'Developing the Nation's Finest Talent'. "It also stems from the framework of UTeM's Strategic Plan 2023–2025, which centres on five key pillars that directly support the culture of innovation within UTeM's educational approach,' she added. The one-day Empowering Education Summit 2025 brought together educational leaders, institutional heads, and collaborative partners from across the country, united in their mission to shape a more inclusive and progressive Malaysian education landscape.
