NYC Is Set to Sizzle as Record Heat Bears Down on the US Northeast

New York City and the US Northeast will shift to searing heat after weeks of rain and clouds as record-breaking temperatures descend on the region. More than 200 daily and overnight records are poised to be broken from Sunday to Tuesday across a wide swath of the country from Chicago to New York, according to the US Weather Prediction Center. The scorching conditions are forecast to last through next week.

Soggy New York to Get More Rain After a Month of Dreary Weather

A weekend storm is expected to bring one last dose of rainfall to an already waterlogged New York after a month of above-average precipitation. Persistent low-pressure systems have been funneling moisture into the southern half of the state, fueling round after round of storms. As of May 29, rainfall totals were up to 6 inches (15 centimeters) above normal from the Albany area south through the Catskill Mountains and into New York City, said Bryan Jackson, a meteorologist at the US Weather Prediction Center.

Powerful Storm to Slam California to Northwest With Rain and Snow

A strong Pacific storm will begin to uncoil across Oregon, Washington and Northern California through the weekend, promising heavy rain and snow that will replenish water supplies but could also unleash destruction. Known as an atmospheric river, the storm will begin dropping rain across the Pacific Northwest Thursday and then head south into Northern California, where it will remain anchored through the weekend into next week, said Frank Pereira, a senior branch forecaster at the US Weather Prediction Center. As much as 7 inches (18 centimeters) of rain will fall, with up to 12 inches of snow or more across the Cascade and Sierra Nevada ranges.
