Trump wants a 'Mission Accomplished' in Iran

Exactly six months ago, President Donald Trump was sworn in as the 47th President of the United States. Trump, only the second US President to be elected for non-consecutive terms, made multiple promises in the run up to his presidency. He promised to end two raging conflicts - the Russia-Ukraine War and Israel's war against Iranian proxies. Six months later, both conflict theatres are, in fact, expanding. Both Russia and Ukraine are striking deeper into each other's Friday, June 13, Israel launched Operation Rising Lion, a wave of air attacks to destroy Iran's ability to acquire nuclear weapons, kill its nuclear scientists and generals and effect regime change from the air. Iran has retaliated by firing hypersonic missiles targeting Israeli months after Trump's swearing in, the biggest question in the world today is not whether Trump can end conflicts. It is whether he will join one. Significant US forces are moving into place for what seems like an imminent US attack on Iran. The USS Enterprise carrier strike group (CSG) is steaming in to the Indian Ocean to join the USS Carl Vinson CSG. The USS Gerald Ford CSG is headed towards the Mediterranean Sea. Three US CSGs are a sign of impending action. The eight permanent US bases in West Asia are on high alert over possible Iranian retaliation, their numbers bolstered by 20 US flight-refuelling tankers towing in large numbers of F-16s, F-15s and quarter of the US's B-2 'Spirit' stealth bomber fleet is already parked in the Indian Ocean island airbase of Diego Garcia, over 4,000 km south of Iran, waiting for the order to strike at Iran's Fordow nuclear enrichment site buried 90 metres underground. The B-2s are one of only three US platforms that can carry the 13-ton GBU-57 Massive Ordnance Penetrators, which can penetrate and destroy deeply-entrenched targets like TRUMP WANTSAt the end of his first term in 2021, Trump prided himself on being the only US President not to start a war. Four years later, the showman President is under enormous pressure to deliver a big win. Something that could secure his place in history, define his legacy, perhaps even result in a Nobel Peace not for want of trying though. In the last six months, Trump has tried every trick from his book to get a peace deal. The book in question is his 1987 bestseller 'Art of the Deal', which underlines the criticality of winning - 'do the dirty work to win'.Trump has arm-twisted world leaders like President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the Oval Office to get him to agree to a peace deal. When neither Russia nor Ukraine showed any intent to end the war, he turned towards other battlefields. He vaulted into the Indian subcontinent, taking credit for mediating a ceasefire between nuclear-armed India and May 10, India launched a supersonic missile barrage shattering Pakistani airbases, pausing operations only after Pakistan dialled in for a ceasefire. Trump says it was because he intervened, an assertion he has repeated despite a June 18 phone call from Prime Minister Modi and an Ministry of External Affairs readout listing facts to the that day, an unmoved Trump feted Pakistan's de facto military ruler, Field Marshal Asim Munir, at a White House luncheon. The menu was not known, but it is likely what every US President has wanted of Islamabad's mercenary army - the use of its airspace and air bases in return for advanced US weapons (which could be used against arch-enemy India) and a short-term alliance against a neighbour, in this case, analyst Brahma Chellaney believes Trump might even have planned to ambush Prime Minister Narendra Modi by setting up a photo-op with Munir in Washington. PM Modi avoided this trap when he skipped Trump's June 18 invitation to visit ACCOMPLISHEDMost US Presidents have proactively sought global conflicts. One of Trump's predecessors, George W Bush, launched what he thought was a quick-win war with Iraq. His 2003 invasion of Iraq was premised on flawed intelligence that Saddam Hussein had Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMDs). Bush posed before a 'Mission Accomplished' banner on a US aircraft carrier when Saddam's creaky regime the operation was a catastrophe. It pulled the US into an insurgency quagmire lasting close to two decades, the deaths of over 4,400 US servicemen, the loss of over USD 2 trillion in costs and fatalities of over half a million Iraqis. With arch-enemy Saddam eliminated, a resurgent Iran bounced back, creating a Shia axis of influence stretching from the Mediterranean to the Arabian US Presidents since Bush have tried to firewall Iran's ambitions and failed. In 2025, Trump hopes to cut the Iranian Gordian knot with quick in-and-out aerial strikes that could destroy Iran's nuclear Iranian regime has been extremely resilient, enduring global sanctions under eight successive US Presidents over four decades. In the unlikely event of a regime collapse, Trump would have achieved an even bigger options will not taint the Trump boast of not starting a war. The Israel-Iran war, Trump can argue, began on then-US President Joe Biden's watch. Another blame Trump could pin on his predecessor as the Donald parades before a 'Mission Accomplished' banner.(Sandeep Unnithan is an author and senior journalist. 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Boldly Ends With Shortened Season 5

The third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has yet to air, but the end is already in sight. In a surprising twist for one of the most successful and popular shows in recent years, Paramount+ confirmed that Season 5 will be its last outing, with production beginning later this year. Instead of the usual 10 episodes, which is set to continue into the fourth season, the concluding run will be reduced to six episodes. The news comes amid cost-cutting measures at Paramount Global, following an earlier announcement to reduce its U.S.-based headcount by 15 percent. On the flip side, it's worth noting that none of the newer Star Trek entries have gotten past five seasons, which may or may not be related to Captain Kirk's talk of a five-year mission from its earliest days. 'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honour what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' said executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and Alex Kurtzman in a joint statement. 'We're deeply grateful to Paramount+ for the chance to complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it, alongside our extraordinary cast and crew. And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.' Taking place in the years when Capt. Christopher Pike led the USS Enterprise before James T. Kirk took over, the prequel series debuted in 2022 and has since been nominated for multiple awards. The upcoming third season, premiering on 17 July in the U.S., stars Anson Mount, Rebecca Romijn, Ethan Peck, Jess Bush, Christina Chong, Celia Rose Gooding, Melissa Navia, Babs Olusanmokun and Martin Quinn, along with guest star Carol Kane, and special guest star Paul Wesley. It won't mark the end of Star Trek 's legacy, with Star Trek: Starfleet Academy next in line to launch into space. Hailing from showrunner Noga Landau, it stars Holly Hunter as a Starfleet captain who leads the Academy, and is expected to drop either this year or early 2026. As for Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , both Season 4 and 5 remain undated. Si Jia is a casual geek at heart – or as casual as someone with Sephiroth's theme on her Spotify playlist can get. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is getting a fifth and final season

We're still over a month away from the premiere of season three, but Paramount has announced that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is getting a fifth season — and that it will be its last. While Strange New Worlds ' first four seasons are (or will be) all ten episodes long, the fifth will run for just six. Still, executive producers Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers, and Alex Kurtzman said in a joint statement that they'll 'complete our five-season mission, just as we envisioned it.' 'From the very beginning, Strange New Worlds set out to honor what Star Trek has always stood for — boundless curiosity, hope and the belief that a better future is possible,' the statement reads. 'And to the passionate fans who've boldly joined us on this journey — thank you. With three more spectacular seasons ahead for you to see and enjoy, this adventure is far from over.' The prequel, which follows the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike (portrayed by Anson Mount), complete with younger versions of a few members of the original crew, was renewed for a fourth season in April 2024. That's now in production, with the fifth set to follow later this year, but before either airs the series will return to Paramount Plus with a two-part season three premiere on July 17th. The other Trek series on the way right now are Starfleet Academy and an untitled live action comedy.

Director: Nicholas Meyer Cast: William Shatner, Ricardo Montalbán, Leonard Nimoy The eye-popping space battles and serene galactic imagery. The mind-controlling space eels. The introduction of the Kobayashi Maru test. The tear-soaked space funeral. The goddamn mind-controlling space eels. The Wrath of Khan stands tall above all the USS Enterprise's cinematic adventures for many reasons, but chief among them is its deference to space itself – the franchise's spiritual home. The reboot might have more advanced ships and shinier effects, but this was the moment Trek matched Star Wars in terms of pure awe in the abyss.

USS Enterprise on its final voyage to Alabama to be dismantled

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) – The USS Enterprise, which was decommissioned back in 2017, is set to head to Mobile, Alabama, to be dismantled, according to the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD). The U.S. DoD awarded the NorthStar Maritime Dismantlement Services nearly $537 million Friday for the complete dismantling, recycling, and disposal of the vessel. Any hazardous material will be packaged and safely transported for disposal at authorized licensed sites, says the DoD. The USS Enterprise, which was the first nuclear air carrier and sailed for more than 50 years, is expected to be fully dismantled by November 2029. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
