Astronomy and Space Sciences Master's thesis defense at SAASST
The examining committee included Prof Attaelmanan Gaffar, Professor in the Department of Applied Physics and Astronomy; Prof Mashhoor Al-Wardat, Professor of Astrophysics at UOS and Director of the Academic Affairs Department at SAASST; and Prof Ahmad Abushattal, Associate Professor at Al-Hussein Bin Talal University in Jordan, who served as the external examiner. The study aimed to rigorously evaluate the potential for stable and habitable exoplanetary orbits within binary star systems by integrating high-precision astrometric, photometric, and spectrophotometric techniques with dynamical modeling. The binary system HD 21841 was comprehensively analyzed using a novel hybrid framework that combines Tokovinin's orbital fitting with Al-Wardat's synthetic SED method, alongside Gaia and Hipparcos astrometric data. The study derived high-precision stellar parameters and revised orbital elements, showing remarkable consistency and alignment with independent datasets. A critically narrow overlap between the system's conservative habitable zone and the circumbinary orbital stability region was identified, pointing to a unique area where Earth-like planets could potentially exist and remain stable. The thesis demonstrates how binary star systems traditionally viewed as hostile to planetary stability, can in fact, harbor conditions suitable for life. The findings contribute valuable benchmarks for the modeling of exoplanetary systems and establish a scientific precedent for future exploration of habitability in complex stellar environments. By the end of discussion, the committee approved the thesis and awarded the researcher a Master's degree in Astronomy and Space Sciences.

Each of your colleges has played an effective role in serving and developing the community in essential fields that any society cannot do without." He added, "You are the mothers of the future and the educators of the coming generations. I congratulate you on this achievement and remind you of the greatest role that awaits you—the role of a mother, the creator of humanity, the educator of generations, and the guardian of values and meanings. An aware and educated mother is the cornerstone in building a generation capable of facing challenges, anchored in its values, open to the world, and committed to its identity." Dr Ajami concluded his speech by expressing his gratitude and appreciation to the faculty for all they have provided in terms of knowledge and guidance, as well as the values and skills they have instilled in the students. He praised them as excellent role models and educators, praying to the Almighty to bless the graduates, guide their paths, and make this day the beginning of a continuous journey of giving, success, and excellence. Graduate speech Graduate Hafsa Abdul Nasser from the College of Engineering delivered the graduates' speech, beginning by praising God for enabling the students to stand as graduates today. She expressed her immense joy, which words cannot fully capture, noting that this moment is not just a fleeting one but a glorious memory etched in their lives, written on the pages of time with the ink of patience and struggle. Hafsa emphasised that no matter how long the journey is, its end is light and glory worth pursuing. She congratulated her fellow graduates, who emerged with victorious hearts and spirits soaring to the sky, taking the stage that would not have been lit without the spark of beginnings and sleepless nights. She extended her sincere gratitude to His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah, who has been a father to knowledge and a guide to progress. Hafsa praised the efforts of His Highness the President of Sharjah University, who sees not just buildings and classrooms, but a treasure trove of knowledge and a cradle of ambition. She remarked that His Highness's messages were exceptional, filled with joy and determination, commending his efforts that have allowed the university to compete with the best. She added, "You are our leader whose eyes never stray, and the support that never wanes." Addressing her professors, Hafsa said, "On our first day in the university, we entered with hesitant steps, as if crossing a bridge into the unknown, carrying small wishes and weighed down by countless questions. But kind hands reached out, not just pointing to doors but holding our hands as if grasping all of life. Thank you for your efforts, which extended beyond mere knowledge transfer; you instilled in us a spirit of inquiry and criticism and opened horizons we once thought were distant. We see you in the classrooms and hallways, guiding and discussing. Thank you for your generous contributions." Hafsa also acknowledged the efforts of parents throughout their educational journey, saying, "How many mothers stood watching their daughters take their first steps toward the gate, their eyes filled with prayers known only to their hearts? How many fathers held back their worries with beautiful patience, placing their hands on their sons' shoulders, saying, 'Go, for knowledge is a dignity that cannot be attained with hesitation, but must be seized'? Our mothers and fathers, you who planted the seeds of knowledge in us and watered them with your prayers, today we return to you with diplomas bearing your names, bestowing upon you pride and saying: Here we are; we have arrived, carrying your message like precious legacies in our hearts, never to fade or be forgotten, as we walk with it and raise it against life with determination." Hafsa concluded her speech by recalling the moments spent within the university's walls, supporting each other, sharing laughter and tears, and holding each other's hands. She added, "We will leave the walls of this university, but we will not leave its message. We will carry it with us wherever we go, not just as graduates but as ambassadors of a promise fulfilled, and an extension of a story that began when this nation first saw the light from the sands. Let us be who we are, wherever we find ourselves—the voice of knowledge when ignorance falls silent, and the lantern of values when the path darkens." Conclusion of the ceremony His Highness Sheikh Sultan bin Ahmed Al Qasimi presented the degrees to the graduates from all bachelor's programmes in the Colleges of Sharia and Islamic Studies, Humanities and Social Sciences, Business Administration, Engineering, Law, Fine Arts and Design, Communication, Science, Computing and Informatics, and Public Policy. You were the first to believe in us, stayed up when we slept, prayed when we were tired, and smiled at our success. On this graduation day, words fall short of expressing what you've given us in love and care. While we celebrate our achievement today, in truth, this is your achievement first. You planted, and we harvested.' A Message to Fellow Graduates Sheikh Dr Salem addressed his fellow graduates: 'Knowledge is the key to this world and the path to the hereafter. Whoever seeks worldly success must pursue knowledge, and whoever seeks the afterlife must pursue knowledge. Those who seek both must pursue knowledge. Seeking beneficial knowledge is the best effort a person can exert. Through knowledge, societies advance, civilisations are built, and achievements are realised. Walk swiftly toward progress, surpass others in excellence, and raise the stature of our homeland with your achievements. No nation has attained prominence without the pursuit of knowledge by its people. Be its present and future, its fortress and strength, its shield and protection.' He concluded by citing the advice of His Highness the Ruler of Sharjah: 'Continue scientific research, for it is the mission of the noble and the path of the learned.' Sultan bin Ahmed commends UOS for earning "Platinum Rating"
First University in the Middle East to Achieve Platinum This came on the occasion of the UOS becoming the first university in the Middle East to achieve Platinum Rating under the Sustainability Tracking, Assessment & Rating System (STARS) administered by AASHE. The university received a full 100% score in the category of sustainable education and research, reflecting its strong commitment to sustainability across operations and planning, as well as its role in preparing a generation conscious of sustainable practices. This achievement aligns with the UAE's and Sharjah's strategic agendas on sustainability and carbon neutrality through education, research, innovation, and sustainable management and planning. The UOS now joins an elite group of only 15 universities worldwide to have received this top-tier Platinum rating — including 8 universities from the United States, 6 from Canada, and now 1 from the Middle East. A Milestone Achievement for the University Community His Highness, President of the UOS, congratulated the Board of Trustees, university leadership, academic, administrative, and technical staff, as well as students, on this new milestone, which adds to the university's impressive record of accomplishments over the years. These successes are the result of a well-defined strategy, vision, and the concerted efforts of the UOS community in providing every possible support to students, who remain at the heart of the university's educational mission. Sustainability as a Core Pillar of Higher Education His Highness emphasised the university's commitment to offering students the best possible experiences by continuously enhancing the academic and research environment — from curriculum development, research opportunities, student activities, and innovation support, to the quality of faculty and staff. This is all done through the lens of sustainability in higher education, a global trend that is reshaping the future of universities and colleges. As such, the UOS continues to advance in global rankings across a range of academic and scientific fields. Transparent and Rigorous Global Evaluation Process The University's award came following its assessment under the STARS rating programme, a transparent and comprehensive system for measuring and tracking sustainability performance in higher education institutions worldwide. The programme encourages institutions to pursue long-term sustainability goals, fosters continuous improvement, and builds more diverse and high-performing university communities committed to excellence in education. The UOS joined the STARS programme in 2021, earning the Silver rating in its first year, then becoming the first Arab university to receive a Gold rating in 2022, and now achieving the Platinum rating, the highest possible level — a clear affirmation of the university's leadership in sustainability.
