Air India announces reduction in international flights

Mumbai, June 19 (UNI) Air India announced that it is reducing international flights on widebody aircraft by 15 per cent "until at least mid-July" , officials said on Thursday. The airline operates about 70 international flights daily on its widebody fleet. Multiple factors, including airspace closures of many countries, have increased flying times to and from the west and enhanced checks on Boeing 787s since AI 171 crash last Thursday have reduced twin-aisle availability. In a statement issued late in the evening on Wednesday, the Tata Group-owned airline said there have been disruptions due to the geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, night curfew in airspaces of many countries in Europe and East Asia, and there are ongoing enhanced safety inspections. Necessary cautious approach is being taken by the engineering staff and Air India pilots, it said. "Given the compounding circumstances that Air India is facing to ensure stability of our operations, better efficiency and to minimise inconvenience to passengers, Air India has decided to reduce its international services on widebody aircraft by 15 per cent for the next few weeks," the statement said. Covid back in Satara district of Maharashtra after 2 years

Mumbai, May 31 (UNI) Covid-19 has resurfaced in Maharashtra's Satara district, prompting renewed caution from health authorities. Two patients are currently receiving treatment: a 70-year-old woman in critical condition on a ventilator at Kranti Singh Nana Patil District Hospital, and a 40-year-old man with a stable condition at Sahyadri Hospital in Karad, Health authorities conformed. The elderly woman, already battling complications from a stroke, was admitted in a severe state, while the male patient reportedly has no underlying health issues and is showing signs of improvement, according to Dr. Yuvraj Karpe. Satara district first reported Covid-19 cases in 2020, with over two lakh infections and numerous fatalities recorded in the following two years. The region had seen no new cases since late 2022, making this recent resurgence a concern for local health officials. In response, the district hospital has established a dedicated Covid ward with a 20-bed ICU equipped with ventilators, oxygen, and essential medicines. Dr Karpe said the hospital staff, experienced in managing previous Covid waves, are fully prepared to handle the situation. He emphasized that widespread vaccination has boosted immunity, and there is no cause for panic. However, he urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid crowded places, wear masks, practise regular handwashing, and follow the preventive measures adopted during earlier waves of the pandemic. Common symptoms in the current cases include cold, fever, cough, and difficulty in breathing. UNI AAA PRS

Court order on Tuesday on plea by accused in Saif Ali Khan attack case

Mumbai, May 12 (UNI) A local court at Bandra is set to pass an order on Tuesday on a plea moved by the Bangladeshi national accused of breaking into actor Saif Ali Khan's home and stabbing him. The accused has sought immediate release from jail, claiming that the police did not give him in writing the grounds for his arrest, which is mandatory, before apprehending him. In a plea filed before the metropolitan magistrate court in Bandra last week, Mohammad Shariful Islam Shehzad, 30, stated that his arrest was illegal and was in violation of section 47 of Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The section mandates that a police officer arresting any person without a warrant should communicate full particulars of the offence for which an accused is being arrested or reveal other grounds for an arrest. The accused has cited various Supreme Court and high court orders holding that the law mandates furnishing the reasons and grounds of arrest to the accused before apprehending him, and that not complying with this mandatory requirement renders the arrest illegal. In one of the judgments mentioned in the plea, the Supreme Court held that police officers must furnish the grounds of arrest to the accused persons in writing. This should be done to avoid situations arising out of conflicting claims and to enable the accused to get an opportunity to defend himself during the remand hearing, the top court said. It also held that subsequent remand orders and the filing of the chargesheet in the case would not cure the defect. Earlier the accused had withdrawn the bail plea moved in the sessions court. Later he approached the Bandra magistrate court with this application claiming that his arrest was illegal. Two months back, the police filed a chargesheet running into more than 1,000-pages which includes crucial forensic evidence that allegedly links the suspect to the attack. Khan was repeatedly stabbed with a knife by the intruder inside his 12th floor apartment in upscale Bandra on January 16 this year. The 54-year-old actor underwent an emergency surgery at the Lilavati Hospital. He was discharged after five days. The accused was arrested by the police two days after the incident. UNI AAA PRS
