Julianna Peña is the defending champion, but the two-time Olympic gold medalist in judo, Kayla Harrison, has made it her mission to win a UFC title. Norma Dumont hints at fight with former UFC champion next
Norma Dumont hints at fight with former UFC champion next Norma Dumont sees a former UFC champion as her ticket to a bantamweight title shot. Dumont (12-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) is on a five-fight winning streak, most recently picking up a bloody win over former title challenger Irene Aldana at UFC 306 last September. She is chomping at the bit for her title shot and sees herself as one fight away from making it happen. The Brazilian is expecting to draw former UFC bantamweight champion Raquel Pennington (16-10 MMA, 13-6 UFC) next. "I think that the fight that makes sense for me and for the UFC is Raquel Pennington," Dumont told MMA Junkie through an interpreter. "I think for me, that's the fight that would really put me in title contention." Pennington lost her bantamweight title to Julianna Peña in her most recent outing at UFC 307. Prior to that, she was on a six-fight winning streak with wins over the likes of Ketlen Vieira, Mayra Bueno Silva, and Macy Chiasson, who holds a win over Dumont in the UFC. "For sure she's strong, she's tough, but I think I'm technically better," Dumont said of Pennington. "I'm faster, I'm stronger. I think this is a fight where we'll get up there, and we'll bang. It's what the UFC wants to see, and I feel really good about this fight." If Dumont can get past Pennington, she'll have to wait for the winner of the expected matchup between UFC bantamweight champion Kayla Harrison and Amanda Nunes. "It's an interesting fight," Dumont said of Harrison vs. Nunes. "It could go either way. It really depends on how Amanda's been training. We can't really tell. We're going to have to find out in the fight. I think that both of them have a tendency to fade after the third round, so it depends on who's going to manage to get a finish."

UFC Coach Reveals He Nearly Pulled Out 'Half-Dead' Merab Dvalishvili from Title Defense Due to Severe Medical Issues
Merab Dvalishvili has built an impressive name for himself as the bantamweight champion since winning the belt when he defeated then-champion Sean O'Malley at UFC 306. Nicknamed 'The Machine' due to his gritty, cardio-reliant, never-say-die attitude in the Octagon, he has built a reputation on his toughness during fights. Even if he fails to secure a takedown, what makes him dangerous is his mentality to shoot for another, results be damned. He may not be the most technical or 'pretty' fighter to watch, but no one can deny he has an unshakeable will to win at whatever cost. Recently, it was revealed that the UFC bantamweight champion's first title defense at UFC 311 against Umar Nurmagomedov was nearly scrapped after his coach, John Wood, considered withdrawing him due to a severe staph infection and open wound. UFC president Dana WhitePhoto By David Fitzgerald/Sportsfile via Getty Images Wood revealed that Dvalishvili was heading into the fight battling antibiotics, pain, and a gruesome staph infection that risked his clearance. Despite the dire circumstances, Dvalishvili insisted on competing, showcasing his trademark toughness in a gritty five-round decision win.. Advertisement "Merab was half-dead for that fight,' Wood said during an interview with MMA Fighting. 'He had an open wound, he had a staph infection, he was on all kinds of antibiotics." Wood even admitted, 'If it was up to me, honestly, I probably would've pulled him out of the fight... That dude could barely walk, but then he'd go spar ten rounds and look phenomenal.' Ahead of his rematch with Sean O'Malley at UFC 316, a fight which some believe is UFC President Dana White's way of angling for a more marketable bantamweight champion, Wood believes that 'The Machine' will continue to leave fans in awe of his toughness and prove his doubters wrong. 'The way that Merab fights, what he brings to the table is just different. People do not understand it,' Wood remarked. 'Sean kind of knows that now. Tim [Welch] knows that... I think it's going to be even more defeating and deflating than it was the first time.'

Daniel Cormier: 'It doesn't get easier for Sean O'Malley' after UFC 316 title loss
Daniel Cormier: 'It doesn't get easier for Sean O'Malley' after UFC 316 title loss Daniel Cormier thinks Sean O'Malley now faces a tough road back to the UFC title. O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) lost to bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) for the second-straight time when he was submitted in Saturday's UFC 316 headliner at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. O'Malley lost in more definitive fashion after dropping their first fight at UFC 306 by unanimous decision. Cormier says O'Malley finds himself in a quandary, as he'll have to face murderer's row at bantamweight if he wants to re-insert himself in the title picture. "He just lost to the champion twice," Cormier said of O'Malley on ESPN's SportsCenter. "Until there's a changeover, it'll be hard for Sean O'Malley to work his way back into a title opportunity, and he might find himself standing across from Umar Nurmagomedov. "It doesn't get easier for 'The Suga Show.' But Merab Dvalishvili really showed he is the cream of the crop at 135 pounds, and he did it better than before. He was more dominant than before, and he finished him. If Merab starts to finish guys, he is a real problem in the UFC." O'Malley knocked out Aljamain Sterling to claim the bantamweight title at UFC 292. He successfully defended his belt against Marlon Vera at UFC 299, before losing it to Dvalishvili at UFC 306.

Aljamain Sterling would love to show Sean O'Malley a healthy version of himself in rematch
Aljamain Sterling would love to show Sean O'Malley a healthy version of himself in rematch Let the former champ rest. But I would absolutely LOVE to show him what a healthy version of myself would do. He's got great skills but I still know that was 50% version of myself. — Aljamain Sterling (@funkmasterMMA) June 8, 2025 Aljamain Sterling is open to running things back with Sean O'Malley – at featherweight. O'Malley (18-3 MMA, 10-3 UFC) lost to bantamweight champion Merab Dvalishvili (20-4 MMA, 13-2 UFC) for a second time when he was submitted in Saturday's UFC 316 headliner at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. Sterling (24-5 MMA, 16-5 UFC), who lost his bantamweight title to O'Malley by knockout at UFC 292, is adamant that had he been 100 percent healthy, the fight would have gone a different way. Sterling faced O'Malley just three months after retaining his belt against Henry Cejudo in a five-round battle at UFC 288. "Let the former champ rest. But I would absolutely LOVE to show him what a healthy version of myself would do. He's got great skills but I still know that was 50% version of myself." Sterling just wants his fair shake. O'Malley entered his first fight against Dvalishvili at UFC 306 with a torn labrum in his hip, which required surgery. He was awarded an immediate rematch at UFC 316, but fell short once again. Sterling, who has since moved up to featherweight, thinks he was unjustly criticized when he spoke out about his injuries. "Weird, right? Somehow Sean gets a rematch after saying he wasn't 100%. Him and the company knew I wasn't 100% and I STILL gave him the opportunity to become champ. But it's 'coping' when I say it. Ppl are weird and bias. But if he doesn't plan to come up, then he can retire with the win, and I'm fine with that." Weird, right? Somehow Sean gets a rematch after saying he wasn't 100%. However, it is unknown what O'Malley's next move will be after losing to Dvalishvili in a title fight for the second-straight time.
