Wales to Benefit From £900m Investment for Major Sporting Events and Grassroots Sport
Villages, towns and cities across Wales and the UK at large are set to benefit from a 'transformational' investment of more than £900 million in sport. The funding will support a pipeline of major international events and deliver new grassroots facilities. The funding commitment, which was outlined in the Spending Review last week, has now been set out by Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy. It will see more than £500 million committed to supporting the delivery of a host of world class sporting events being held in Wales and around the UK over the coming years, including the first stages of the Tour de France in 2027, the European Athletics Championships 2026 and the men's UEFA EURO 2028 – alongside Ireland – for which Cardiff's National Stadium of Wales (Principality Stadium) is a host venue. These events are expected to deliver significant economic benefits, with EURO 2028 alone projected to generate up to £2.4 billion in socio-economic value across the UK. Work is also continuing with the Home Nation football associations, including the Welsh FA, and devolved administrations to develop the bid for the UK to host the Women's FIFA World Cup in 2035. In tandem at least £400 million will be invested in new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities that promote health, wellbeing and community cohesion. Work to remove the barriers to physical activity for under-represented groups, such as women and girls, people with disabilities, and ethnic minority communities will continue. Already, government funding has helped clubs to build new pitches and changing rooms, install floodlights, solar panels and goalposts; supporting a range of sports including football, rugby and others. Government funding has already seen £400,000 invested in a new artificial pitch at Abersychan Comprehensive School and a £220,000 upgrade of the grass pitch at Ruthin Town FC. Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport, Lisa Nandy, said: 'Sport tells our national story in a way few other things can – uniting communities, inspiring millions, and showcasing our nation on the global stage. 'This major backing for world-class events will drive economic growth across the country, delivering on our Plan for Change. Coupled with strong investment into grassroots sport, we're creating a complete pathway to allow the next generation of sporting heroes to train and take part in sport in communities across the UK. ' Secretary of State for Wales, Jo Stevens, said: 'The investment in sport is fantastic news and means that grassroots facilities all around Wales will be upgraded, expanded, and improved, helping more people get active and improve their wellbeing. 'The £500 million for sporting events will strengthen Wales and the UK's global reputation for excellence in staging major sporting events, hosting EURO 2028 in our National Stadium in Cardiff and a stage of the Tour de France in 2027.' Debbie Hewitt MBE, Chair of the UK and Ireland 2028 Board, said: 'We welcome today's announcement of significant investment in sport from the UK Government, which marks a major boost to the successful delivery of UEFA EURO 2028. This commitment will not only help us stage a world-class tournament but also ensure that communities across the UK feel long-lasting benefits – from enhanced grassroots facilities to stronger local economies. 'UEFA EURO 2028 is a once-in-a-generation opportunity and with this investment, we are better placed than ever to deliver an event with pride, purpose and impact.' Nick Webborn, Chair of UK Sport, said: 'We welcome the Government's ongoing commitment to hosting the Tour De France, Tour De France Femmes and Euro 2028. These events have huge potential to drive economic growth, bring people together and inspire the next generation in communities across the UK. 'We believe that live sport is a fundamental part of this country's social fabric. We are really excited to be working with the Government and support their commitment to secure the pipeline of big events beyond 2028 to ensure we can continue to reach, inspire and unite people in every corner of the country.'

What latest UEFA update means for Ireland's chances of automatic Euro 2028 place
Ireland have received a boost in their bid to qualify for Euro 2028 following UEFA's latest update. The governing body confirmed places at the tournament will be reserved for the two best-ranked host nations who don't automatically qualify. Ireland were confirmed as co-hosts along with Scotland, Wales and England back in 2023. Ireland, Scotland, Wales and England will co-host UEFA EURO 2028. Pic: Kristian Skeie/UEFA via Sportsfile Northern Ireland had been included as part of initial plans but that fell through when the plug was pulled on funding for the dilapidated Casement Park. The GAA ground has not been used since 2011 and spiralling construction costs have kept the project grounded for years on end. Elsewhere, in Dublin, the Aviva Stadium is scheduled to host six games throughout the tournament. Casement Park's inclusion in Euro 2028 was shelved as issues persisted with the derelict GAA ground. Pic: Ramsey Cardy/Sportsfile That figure could yet swell, however, with the five fixtures intended for Casement Park set to be divided out among other nations. The latest update from UEFA is a positive; it means that if two of England, Wales and Scotland reach the tournament through qualifying, Ireland are guaranteed to be at the tournament. That is irrespective of how they get on in their own qualification campaign, making it a backdoor safety net for the Boys in Green – although fans will still be looking for a solid qualifying campaign when it rolls around. As Casement Park is out of the equation, Northern Ireland will not be similarly afforded a backdoor exemption if they fail to qualify for the tournament.

UEFA today confirmed that Scotland, England, Wales and Republic of Ireland must qualify for the 2028 European Championship. Host nations previously qualified automatically for the finals, but European football's governing body have decided that all four countries must go through the qualifying process. Tournament matches will be staged in Scotland, England, Wales and Ireland but none of them will be given the luxury of a reserved place in the finals. UEFA will, however, reserve two spots for the two highest-ranked host teams who do not make it through the qualifiers. Twelve group winners and eight best-placed runners-up will progress to Euro 2028, with two spots reserved for hosts if needed. The remaing places to make up the 24 finalists will be decided via play-offs. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad In a statement issued this afternoon, UEFA explained their decision. It read: 'The UEFA Executive Committee has confirmed the qualification format for UEFA EURO 2028, to be held across nine venues in the UK and Ireland with 24 participating teams. 'As in the current 2024-26 European Qualifiers, twelve qualifying groups will be formed of four or five teams. Hosts England, Republic of Ireland, Scotland, and Wales will also participate in qualifying, drawn into separate groups. The 12 group winners and 8 best runners-up (20 teams) will advance directly to the EURO 2028 final tournament. 'Two spots in the final tournament will be reserved for the two best ranked host nations who are not qualified as group winners or best runners-up after the completion of the qualifying group stage. The remaining spots will be assigned via play-offs between the remaining runners-up in the qualifying groups and the best ranked 2026-27 UEFA Nations League non-qualified group winners. Euro 2028 host nations told they must qualify 'Depending on the number of spots used by the host nations, the number of final tournament spots decided by play-offs may vary between two and four, in one of the three following scenarios: Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad • Both reserved qualifying slots for the hosts used: Eight teams compete in two paths for two final tournament spots, with single-leg semi-finals and finals. • One reserved qualifying slot for the hosts used: Twelve teams compete in three paths for three final tournament spots, with single-leg semi-finals and finals. • No reserved qualifying slot for the hosts used: Eight teams contest four home-and-away play-off ties, with the winners advancing to the final tournament. 'The tournament schedule is expected to be released in autumn 2025. The tournament regulations with all remaining details will be published by the end of the year.' They utilised the Nations League play-off route to reach the delayed Euro 2020 finals, which did not take place until 2021 due to the Covid 19 outbreak. Clarke then oversaw automatic qualification for Euro 2024 as Scotland finished second to Spain in Group A. On both occasions, they were eliminated at the intial group phase of the finals. Clarke is currently preparing the national team for World Cup qualifiers later this year as he bids to lead the country to a first global tournament since 1998.
