Fans are all saying the same thing after Tom Cruise finally gets his Oscar
Tom Cruise is finally set to receive an honorary Oscar after a string of nominations, leaving fans equally delighted and baffled. It has been announced that the stunt-loving actor, who stole the show in Top Gun, the Mission: Impossible franchise, Tropic Thunder, the Firm and so many more, is getting a coveted trophy alongside Dolly Parton, Debbie Allen and Wynn Thomas. The 62-year-old has been nominated for performances in Born on the Fourth of July, Magnolia and Rain Man, but has never taken the statue home. He will now be honored at the upcoming Governors Awards in November, alongside his fellow honorees – who are getting the Oscars 'to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences in any discipline, or for outstanding service to the Academy'. Academy president Janet Yang hailed the stars as 'legendary individuals' who have made a 'lasting impact' in a statement. 'The Academy's Board of Governors is honored to recognize these brilliant artists,' it read. 'Debbie Allen is a trailblazing choreographer and actor, whose work has captivated generations and crossed genres. 'Tom Cruise's incredible commitment to our filmmaking community, to the theatrical experience, and to the stunts community has inspired us all. 'Beloved performer Dolly Parton exemplifies the spirit of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award through her unwavering dedication to charitable efforts. 'And production designer Wynn Thomas has brought some of the most enduring films to life through a visionary eye and mastery of his craft.' Following the news, movie fans flocked to social media to unpack Tom's latest achievement, with many wondering how he hadn't already taken home an Oscar. Reddit user Jnighy fumed: 'Born in 4th of July, Magnolia, Eyes Wide Shut, Jerry Maguire and Colateral. They had so many chances to give him an actual Oscar [sic].' Dianagorgon insisted: 'Cruise should have won an Oscar a long time ago.' 'He should have one already to be fair. But I'm really glad he's getting it none the less,' SangiMTL agreed. To view this video please enable JavaScript, and consider upgrading to a web browser that supports HTML5 video 'His absolute love and dedication to the art is second to none and that passion is seen on screen. He absolutely deserves this honor and recognition. Well deserved [sic].' Krazykarrottop posted: 'Like him or hate him, he deserves this. His commitment to the art of film is leaps and bounds past any other actor.' Lolalight16 declared: 'Of course he should have a bunch of these already but I'm still so happy for him! There's no one more deserving!' As StorytellingZ added: 'I normally don't say this, but for some reason him getting an Honorary Oscar at this point of his career feels more special than him getting an acting award as of now. 'Feels like the whole package deal: the actor, the producer, and the stunt man.' Tom is, without a doubt, one of the biggest actors to grace the big screen, having started his career in the early 80s with stints in Endless Love and the Outsiders, before leaving us all stunned in 1983 projects Risky Business and All the Right Moves. He led the way in 1986 classic Top Gun, taking on the role of Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell opposite Val Kilmer and Jennifer Connolly – with the trio reprising their roles in 2022 blockbuster sequel Top Gun: Maverick. More Trending The Hollywood favorite racked up appearances in Cocktail, Rain Man, Interview with a Vampire and A Few Good Men before landing the leading role in the Mission: Impossible franchise. He starred as Ethan Hunt in eight action-packed flicks including the most recent instalment, Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which was released last month. Aside from his action blockbusters, Tom has also showcased his range in Tropic Thunder, The Mummy, Jerry Maguire and Vanilla Sky. Unsurprisingly, he is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down and is set to work with Alejandro González Iñárritu on an untitled comedy slated for release next year. Got a story? Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie Are Having ‘Serious Conversations' About a ‘Tropic Thunder' Spinoff
Though still in the thick of promoting 'Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning,' writer/director Christopher McQuarrie and Tom Cruise are already working on their next pair-up — it just might not be what you expect. 'The conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so fucking funny,' McQuarrie said in a recent interview with Josh Horowitz on his 'Happy Sad Confused' podcast. More from IndieWire 'Mission: Impossible': Director Christopher McQuarrie Climbed Onto the Wing of a 140-mph Plane Himself All 8 'Mission: Impossible' Movies, Ranked Worst to Best Cruise played the fictional Hollywood power player in the 2008 satire 'Tropic Thunder' from director Ben Stiller. Heavily modeled on Scott Rudin, Grossman is a Diet Coke-swilling, obscenity-prone producer with no filter and tendencies toward anger, as well as dance. It may sound silly to center an entire film around him, but McQuarrie and Cruise are actively looking for a way in. 'We're having serious conversations about it and how best to do it,' McQuarrie said. 'It ultimately comes down to what that character is.' The big question remains whether people will want to watch a film with Grossman as the lead character. McQuarrie explained that the 'leading man' status Cruise holds makes it difficult to place him in roles that are so monstrous. Even with 'Magnolia,' which earned Cruise an Academy Award nomination, the actor was part of a very large ensemble, making it easier for him not to have to carry the whole film. 'Ethan Hunt, a character of whom people can be critical, is on rails,' said McQuarrie. 'There's so little he is able to do outside of his responsibilities as a leading man and when you try and push those boundaries, 'Mission' instantaneously cease to become 'Mission.'' Right now, McQuarrie and Cruise are not trying to figure out a plot to drop Grossman into as much as they're thinking of specific scenes they'd like to see him play. Moreover, discussing ideas around this character has offered a welcome reprieve from their other responsibilities, particularly on 'The Final Reckoning.' 'Just to be sitting at the breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute,' McQuarrie told Horowitz, 'is such decompression. And just riffing with Tom, playing to Les Grossman — it was one of the real joys of making this movie.' In addition to this possible 'Tropic Thunder' spinoff, McQuarrie and Cruise are also working on a number of other ideas, including a 'Days of Thunder' sequel, another installment in the 'Top Gun' franchise, and a musical. Watch McQuarrie's full interview on 'Happy Sad Confused' below. 'Mission Impossible: The Final Reckoning' is currently in theaters from Paramount Pictures. Mission: Impossible Director Hints At Les Grossman Spin-Off With Tom Cruise
Last Updated: Mission: Impossible- The Final Reckoning, Christopher McQuarrie, hinted that a Tropic Thunder spin-off featuring Tom Cruise's Les Grossman could happen. Fans of the 2008 comedy Tropic Thunder may be in for a treat. Christopher McQuarrie, director of Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, hinted at a possible spin-off starring Tom Cruise's character, Les Grossman. McQuarrie revealed that he and Cruise had 'serious conversations" about creating a film centred entirely on the wild and unforgettable Grossman. During the shoot of The Final Reckoning, they brainstormed ideas on how to bring the character back freshly and excitingly. The director described these discussions as both hilarious and thrilling as they worked to craft the perfect story for Grossman's return. While appearing on Josh Horowitz's Happy Sad Confused podcast, the filmmaker said, 'Everything will in one way or another happen. It will not necessarily happen in the time or place you think it will. They're all things we're talking about. We have ideas about the conversations we've had about Les Grossman are so funny. I mean, we're talking about it, man. We're having very serious conversations about it and how best to do it and where you know what it ultimately comes to down to what that character is." 'You hit the nail right on the head that I was going to a leading man, Tom Cruise will tell you a leading man has different responsibilities. Tom is just to be sitting at a breakfast table, not talking about the movie we're making for a minute is such decompression, right? And just riffing with Tom playing to Les Grossman at the table was one of the real joys of making this movie. It was all the stuff we were doing, planning the future, while slugging out the present," Christopher McQuarrie added. Fans of Tropic Thunder will instantly recognise Les Grossman—the loud, bald, and fiery movie producer with a short fuse and a larger-than-life personality. One of his most memorable scenes is a video call with the film crew after a disastrous shoot, where he famously orders a crew member to punch the director (played by Steve Coogan) in the face. Another iconic moment fans love is when Grossman breaks into an unexpected, hilarious dance to Ludacris's 'Get Back." Other than Cruise, the 2008 movie also features Ben Stiller, Jack Black, Robert Downey Jr., Jay Baruchel and Brandon T. Jackson. First Published:

Where to meet the real Ben Stiller and Timothée Chalamet: Courtside
Ben Stiller has been near the center of American culture for nearly 40 years, from 'The Ben Stiller Show' in the early '90s to 'Reality Bites' to 'Zoolander' to 'Meet the Parents' to 'Tropic Thunder' to his work behind the scenes of the Apple TV+ smash 'Severance.' But that's all showbiz stuff; none of us have ever really known the man himself. To see the real Ben Stiller, the human being beneath it all, you have to watch a Knicks game.
