Community leaders call on United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to support demilitarization of Tripoli
Deputy Special Representative for the Secretary-General and Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator Aeneas Chuma chaired a meeting with the Tripoli Center Outreach Committee Monday to discuss de-escalation efforts in Tripoli. These leaders, who has contributed to brokering and sustaining the truce since the May crisis, have been pivotal in preventing violence through community engagement. The Mission has facilitated targeted mediation meetings to reinforce their peacebuilding capacities, encourage coordination with official security institutions, and amplify local ownership in sustaining stability. During the same week, UNSMIL's SIS met with notables and community leaders from across the western region as part of ongoing efforts to support local peacebuilding. The meeting followed up on previous engagements and recognized their critical role in sustaining the truce. Participants discussed ways to further contribute to the implementation of local security arrangements and enhance coordination with official institutions. UNSMIL reaffirmed its commitment to inclusive dialogue and community-driven stabilization. 'UNSMIL and IC need to urge all parties to refrain from provocative speech and actions,' one of the notables said. During the meetings, the leaders shared their efforts and presented recommendations for peace initiatives. Participants stressed the need for a disarmament, demobilization, and reintegration program, warning of the risks of military presence in residential areas. "We share the demands of Tripoli's people and aim to demilitarize the capital," stated the participants. UNSMIL expressed its intention to increase collaboration and ensure that local voices continue to shape both local and national peace processes. Al-Ittihad's bus was set on fire, the club said in a statement. Players and soccer officials fled the stadium amid a fan disturbance outside the facility. Footage circuited online showed clashes between fans and security forces in and around the stadium. Al-Ahly blamed what they called a 'provocative act' by one of Al-Ittihad players for the disturbance. They said in a statement that security forces used 'excessive force and live fire' against fans at the club's headquarters. Local media reported that Portuguese referee Fábio José Costa was injured.

Hundreds appeared in the upper tier and began to climb down the stand wielding flares. They then charged onto the pitch as away side Al-Ittihad 's players ran into the changing room or into the terraces in fear. The referee swiftly made the decision to abandon the match with the score 1-0 to Al-Ittihad. Violence continued outside the group as their team bus was set on fire. Members of security that are connected to the government were also targeted by supporters. The ugly scenes continued late into the night and ammunition was reportedly fired to disperse crowds by the military. It comes amid huge protests calling for Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah to resign. The uprising began after armed groups clashed in Tripoli over the weekend. Demonstrators are demanding elections, while accusing Dbeibah of corruption and being to blame for the growing strength of armed groups. Nationwide protests have turned violent. Reports claim that at least eight civilians and a police officer have died. Several Libyan ministers have resigned since the start of the protests.

At least 60 migrants, including Pakistanis and Egyptians, feared dead after Libya shipwrecks
TRIPOLI, Libya: At least 60 migrants including Pakistanis and Egyptians are feared dead after a pair of shipwrecks off the coast of Libya over the past week, according to the International Organization for Migration. The first ship went down on June 12 near a Libyan port in Tripoli, with 21 people, including women and children, reported missing and only five survivors found, the IOM said in a statement Tuesday. Those lost at sea included Eritrean, Pakistani, Egyptian and Sudanese nationals. The second wreck took place about 35 kilometers (20 miles) off the port city of Tobruk, with the sole survivor reporting 39 people lost at sea, according to the UN body. 'With dozens feared dead and entire families left in anguish, IOM is once again urging the international community to scale up search and rescue operations and guarantee safe, predictable disembarkation for survivors,' said Othman Belbeisi, the IOM's regional director for the Middle East and North Africa. According to the statement, at least 743 people have died so far this year trying to cross the Mediterranean to Europe. The deadly route, it said, is 'marked by increasingly dangerous smuggling practices, limited rescue capacity and growing restrictions on humanitarian operations.' As of June 15, according to the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, migrant landings on the Italian coast were up 15 percent year on year, with most originating in Libya.
