Trevor Sinclair, part of India's coaching staff at AFC Asian Cup, declared bankrupt

Former England footballer Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt after a judge accused him of 'burying his head in the sand' for failing to pay a five-figure amount related to his media work in 2021 and 2022. Sinclair, a 2002 World Cupper with the Three Lions, joined the Indian men's team as part of its coaching staff during the AFC Asian Cup in Doha, Qatar, in January 2024. However, the team failed to score any goals and exited in the group stage after losses to Australia, Uzbekistan, and Syria. The Englishman is currently part of the coaching staff of the senior men's team of Jamaica. Sinclair, who played 360 Premier League matches for clubs like West Ham, Manchester City, and Queens Park Rangers, was issued the bankruptcy order at Central London County Court on June 12. The court heard that Sinclair owed £36,424 to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC), including more than £13,000 related to his work as a television and radio pundit. Judge Caroline Wilkinson presided over the case and granted the bankruptcy order in the former player's absence. She stated, 'Mr Sinclair is not in attendance today, and no proposals have been put forward for paying his debt. In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order.' Sinclair has yet to issue a public statement regarding the bankruptcy.

Ex-England World Cup star Trevor Sinclair declared bankrupt over £36k tax bill

Former England international Trevor Sinclair was not in court as he was judged to be bankrupt after failing to come to an arrangement to pay a debt of more than £36,000 Former England international Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt after racking up a debt of more than £36,000. The 52-year-old failed to pay taxes and penalties that he owed. The ex-Premier League ace 's debt related to punditry work undertaken in the 2021/22 tax year and was previously handed extra time to come up with a solution. But he did not turn up to court on Thursday after failing to come up with the money or offer an alternative proposal. ‌ Judge Caroline Wilkinson said HMRC had not heard from the former QPR, West Ham and Manchester City player. That lack of contact saw the conclusion that he is 'unable to pay his debts as they fall due', report the Independent. ‌ A judge in April, at the Central London County Court, heard Sinclair owed the money after his accountant passed away. The figure emerged in relation to two sums that totalled more than £13,000 in addition to outstanding National Insurance and penalty payments. HMRC had wanted a bankruptcy order on that occasion but the case was adjourned to give him longer to pay the bill. Lawyer Robert Lee told the court at that time that Sinclair was conducting media work and was "currently in receipt of a job offer in Saudi Arabia". Lee said that his client's debt arose due to an error that saw Sinclair "being considered self-employed when he ought not to have been". But the HMRC lawyer revealed on Thursday that Sinclair had again failed to make contract and asked the judge to confirm their bankruptcy petition. The case was initially paused to offer the opportunity for Sinclair to enter an 'individual voluntary arrangement' rather than bankruptcy. Judge Wilkinson said: "Mr Sinclair is not in attendance today and no proposals have been put forward for paying his debt. In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order." Sinclair started his career at Blackpool before the Seasiders earned a record fee from QPR in 1993 to move to the Premier League. In 1997, Sinclair earned the goal of the season award for an impressive bicycle kick from outside of the box. In 1994, the Republic of Ireland attempted to call up Sinclair ahead of the World Cup in the United States but he was unable to feature for his mother's homeland having already represented the Three Lions at under-21s level. It wasn't until 2001 that he earned an England cap and ultimately four of his 12 outings came during the 2002 World Cup and impressed for the Three Lions on the left.

Trevor Sinclair bankrupt after ‘burying head in sand' over debts

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair has been declared bankrupt over a tax debt totalling £36,000. Sinclair, 52, was accused by a judge of 'burying his head in the sand' over the debt, which relates to his punditry work in the 2021/22 tax year. Sinclair, who is currently a coach for the Jamaica national team and played in the Premier League for Queens Park Rangers, West Ham United and Manchester City, was declared bankrupt after he did not turn up at court this week. He was previously given extra time to find the money in April, when Judge Caroline Wilkinson warned: 'Mr Sinclair has to wake up to the fact that there's no more head in the sand because this is serious'. Lawyers for HMRC said the amount owed (£36,424) includes two sums of more than £13,000 for punditry work, plus outstanding National Insurance and penalty payments. Champion News Service reports that Shabab Rizvi, the HMRC barrister, said: 'The debtor is a former Premier League footballer and should have the means to satisfy the debt, but there's been no contact with HMRC at all.' In April the judge heard that Sinclair ended up owing the money following the death of his accountant. The case was then adjourned after Sinclair's lawyer told the court that the former footballer's debt arose from him being wrongly considered self-employed. Sinclair's lawyer also said he was working in the media and 'currently in receipt of a job offer in Saudi Arabia'. But Sinclair failed to show up when the case returned to court this week, with Judge Wilkinson saying: 'Mr Sinclair is not in attendance today and no proposals have been put forward for paying his debt. In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order.' Sinclair, who made 12 appearances for England, previously lost a punditry role with the BBC after racially abusing a police officer who had arrested him for drink-driving. And in 2022 he was suspended by Talksport after suggesting black and Asian communities should not mourn the Queen. Within two hours of Buckingham Palace confirming the Queen's death, Sinclair had posted online: 'Racism was outlawed in England in the 60's & its [sic] been allowed to thrive so why should black & brown mourn!! #queen.' This was later followed by an apology, in which he said: 'My tweet yesterday was ill timed at a time when the royal family, and many around the world were grieving for the Queen. I apologise for any offence caused to those mourning The Queen.'

Former England star made bankrupt over £36k tax debt

Former England winger Trevor Sinclair has been adjudicated bankrupt over a £36,000 tax debt. The former QPR, West Ham and Manchester City star scooped 12 England caps during his career and made a fortune before becoming a TV and radio pundit. But on Thursday he was made bankrupt by HMRC after failing to pay taxes and penalties totalling £36,424. The debt related to pundit work undertaken in the 2021-22 tax year. Sinclair, 52, had previously been given extra time to come up with the money or alternative proposals to pay. However, he did not turn up to court. Judge Caroline Wilkinson said HMRC had received no contact from Sinclair and concluded that he is "unable to pay his debts as they fall due". The case previously reached Central London County Court in April, where the judge heard that Sinclair ended up owing a sizeable chunk of cash to the taxman after his accountant died. The amount includes two large sums of over £13,000 for work as a pundit, plus outstanding National Insurance and penalty payments, HMRC lawyers said. The taxman had wanted a bankruptcy order, with HMRC barrister Shabab Rizvi saying: 'The debtor is a former Premier League footballer and should have the means to satisfy the debt, but there's been no contact with HMRC at all." However, the case was adjourned to give him more time to pay after his lawyer Robert Lee told the court Sinclair was working in the media and "currently in receipt of a job offer in Saudi Arabia". He said the debt arose from Sinclair "being considered self-employed when he ought not to have been". Giving him the extra time in April, Judge Wilkinson warned the former footballer he had to face the reality of his situation, commenting: 'Mr Sinclair has to wake up to the fact that there's no more head in the sand because this is serious'. But when the case returned to court on Thursday, the HMRC lawyer disclosed that Sinclair had again failed to materialise, asking the judge to confirm HMRC's bankruptcy petition. 'The last hearing was adjourned in order for proposals to be put forward by Mr Sinclair, but we have received no contact from him since then and nor have any proposals been put forward," she said. Judge Wilkinson, making the bankruptcy order, said the case had been paused for Sinclair to consider pursuing an alternative to bankruptcy such as an 'individual voluntary arrangement'. 'Mr Sinclair is not in attendance today and no proposals have been put forward for paying his debt," she continued. "In the circumstances, the court finds that Mr Sinclair is unable to pay his debts as they fall due and it will make the bankruptcy order." Sinclair played four times for England at the 2002 World Cup and also scored the Match of the Day goal of the season in 1997 for a spectacular bicycle kick for QPR against Barnsley FC. He retired in 2008, but his later career as a TV and radio pundit tailed off when he questioned why "black and brown people" were mourning Queen Elizabeth after her death in 2022, which led to him being taken off the air by talkSPORT. That followed an earlier setback in 2018 when he was convicted of drink driving and racially abusing a police officer after an incident in which he urinated while sitting in a police car after being arrested.
