Riders Ouellette delivering blows to the competition
Saskatchewan Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris (7) hands off to Saskatchewan Roughriders running back A.J. Ouellette (45) during the first half of the CFL Hamilton Tiger Cats home opener against the Saskatchewan Roughriders in Hamilton, Ont., on Saturday, June 14, 2025. THE CANADIAN PRESS/Peter Power While the CFL season is still young, week three just being on the horizon, Saskatchewan Roughriders' running back AJ Ouellette made his early case for play of the year, or at least stiff arm of the year. Ouellette's highlight-reel 47-yard touchdown run against Hamilton was punctuated with a stiff arm that sent the Ti-Cats DaShaun Amos to the Tim Horton's Field turf. 'We called the run, and I knew it was going to be a good play, I didn't think it was going to develop into that. But once I saw our monster kick out their d-end, I said there's nobody back here. So, I just had to set up the safety in the front and press it back,' Ouellette said. Ouellette told CTV News that everything about the run was fun, but in particular, dishing out the punishment at the end. 'Coach Harris was yelling at me all of last season that my stiff arm wasn't violent enough, and the stiff arm was a straight punch to the jaw, so it felt good.' Daniel Johnson, who made his first start of the season at left tackle in week two, said that being a part of the celebration left him more winded than the long run. 'I was too busy breathing, trying to catch up to AJ celebrating. It's amazing, I feel like the celebration is more tiring that the play itself because you're just so geeked up. You're so happy to see your brothers win, and so happy to see us in the endzone.' Ouellette and the Riders have a quick turnaround this week, heading to Toronto for their second Eastern away game in a row on Friday. Ouellette is no stranger to playing on BMO Field, having been a member of the Argos as recently as 2023, even making a quip about some possible gamesmanship by Toronto. 'It's going to be a fun one, I'm used to the grass so I'm excited to see if I still got the footwork on the grass. They'll probably do some extra watering the night before and the morning of, not that I know any secrets.' The Riders will take on the Argos Friday at 5:30 CST.

On Saturday night, the Roughriders improved to 2-0 on the CFL season with a 28-23 road victory over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats, who dropped to 0-2. After shutting down the Ottawa Redblacks late in the fourth quarter of their Week 1 victory, the Roughriders were able to do the same on Saturday night in Hamilton as the defence forced a turnover on downs in the last minute to secure the win. Roughriders quarterback Trevor Harris completed 26-of-37 passes for 295 yards with one touchdown and one interception. KeeSean Johnson led the Riders in receiving with 124 yards on eight catches and a touchdown reception while running back A.J. Ouellette gained 96 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries. Newly signed running back Ka'Deem Carey had 26 rushing yards on four attempts while also registering one catch for nine yards. While Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell threw for 336 yards and a touchdown. with Kenny Lawler (eight catches, 162 yards) being his favourite target, the Roughriders were able to score points off Mitchell as halfback Rolan Milligan found the end zone with a pick six in the third quarter. Linebackers Jameer Thurman and C.J. Reavis both sacked Mitchell in the contest. As much as Saskatchewan's offence was clicking on Saturday, the Green and White left points on the board as kicker Brett Lauther missed three of his five field goal attempts and one convert attempt. However, the 10 missed points didn't make a difference as Saskatchewan's defence was able to force a late turnover on downs in the final minute of play to secure the victory. On Saskatchewan's first drive of the game, the Roughriders were moving the ball before Harris was intercepted by Hamilton's Jonathan Moxey. The Tiger-Cats proceeded to put together an 11-play, 74-yard drive capped off by Mitchell finding Tim White for a nine-yard touchdown pass to make it 7-0 Hamilton with the convert. In the second quarter, after a 13-play, 64-yard drive, Saskatchewan was forced to attempt a field goal, but Lauther was wide on his 51-yard attempt, snapping his streak of 23 straight field goals made dating back to last season. After Saskatchewan's defence forced a quick two-and-out, returner Mario Alford gave the Roughriders good field position with a 25-yard punt return. From there, Ouellette took a handoff and sprinted 47 yards into the end zone to give the Riders their touchdown of the game. Lauther missed the convert as Hamilton stayed on top 7-6. Before the first half was up, the Roughriders used the final few seconds of the half to get Lauther into field goal range before he was wide on a 50-yard attempt. In the second half, Saskatchewan's defence was able to put points on the board as Milligan, last year's top defensive player, intercepted Mitchell and returned it 64 yards to the end zone. A successful two-point convert attempt made it 14-7 Riders. Hamilton added a field goal to make it 14-10 midway the third quarter before Lauther split the uprights from 25 yards out to restore Saskatchewan's seven-point lead. At the start of the fourth quarter, after bobbling the snap, Mitchell found Lawler for a 39-yard gain to get the Ti-Cats to the one-yard line before Ante Litre plunged in for the touchdown to tie the game 17-17. Hoping to respond to that scoring drive, Roughriders receiver Dohnte Meyers made a 22-yard diving catch before Johnson almost hauled in a deep touchdown pass. The Roughriders were forced to settle for a field goal as Lauther was good from 40 yards out to make it 20-17 for Saskatchewan. With the three points, Lauther reached 1,000 points in his career in his 100th game as a Roughrider. The back-and-forth game continued as Mitchell found Lawler for a 42-yard gain before the Tiger-Cats tied the game with a field goal of their own from 32 yards to make it 20-20 with ten minutes left. On Saskatchewan's next drive, Harris and Johnson connected for four first-down catches in a span of five plays before the duo connected on a 15-yard touchdown pass as the Riders took the 27-20 lead with seven minutes to go. The Tiger-Cats tacked on another field goal to make it 27-23 with 4:19 to go before Saskatchewan put together an eight-play, 49-yard drive to get into scoring range but Lauther missed his third field goal of the night from 29 yards out at it remained a five-point game. With less than a minute left, the Ti-Cats generated a first down but the Roughriders were able to stuff Hamilton on three straight plays, with linebacker A.J. Allen making a crucial stop on third down to seal the victory for Saskatchewan. The Roughriders (2-0) get set for a second straight East Division road game as the Green and White will visit the Toronto Argonauts on Friday in Week 3 of the CFL season. The Argos (0-2) are coming off a 29-19 loss against the Calgary Stampeders on Saturday. tshire@ Here's how the Roughriders line up against the Tiger-Cats Up Close: Meet Roughriders linebacker C.J. Riders' Picton willing to fill in where needed
In his seventh year with the Saskatchewan Roughriders, Regina native and Riders' receiver Mitch Picton is once again being called upon to fill in for an injured teammate. Kian Schaffer-Baker suffered a foot injury in week one's victory over Ottawa, and that has thrust Picton into the starting lineup. 'Things change really quickly, so yeah, it's something that I'm comfortable with,' Picton said. 'The more time I get on the field, the more reps I get, I'm happy with that. Unfortunate circumstances obviously but I'm ready to go and step in wherever I'm needed.' Picton relayed to CTV News that despite some bad injury luck for both him and quarterback Trevor Harris, the two have built a good rapport with each other. 'Me and him have been getting injured at opposite times, so we actually haven't played that many games together. So, not a ton of live reps but we've had off-seasons, training camp and practice, so we're comfortable with each other and happy with the spots that we're going to be in,' Picton said. The duo will get to add one more shared game to their list, as Picton will be the lone new name added to the starting receiver lineup for Saturday's road game in Hamilton. Harris said he has full confidence in Picton's ability to step in and help the offense continue to thrive. 'I think Mitch Picton's one of the better receivers in this league. I love throwing the ball to him. Just his depth, trusty hands, and sneaky good after the catch, and yeah, not a guy we worry about,' Harris said. That confidence shown by Harris towards not only Picton, but the entirety of the receiver core, enables the pass catchers to be a cohesive unit. 'He has the utmost confidence, and he says whoever is on the field, we're going to throw it. He has confidence in us, and we have confidence that he's going to put us in a position to make plays. So, yeah, we are very fortunate to have Trev,' Picton said. Picton, Harris, and the offensive unit put up 31 points in week one. They will be looking for an encore performance in Hamilton.
