Windsorites prepare to watch Ford Fireworks amid explosive temperatures
The Ford Fireworks will illuminate the sky over Windsor and Detroit on Monday, but it could be a hot one for Windsorites taking in the show. Monday's show marks the 67th edition of the Ford Fireworks. The display itself is set to begin at 10:08 p.m. and last approximately 24 minutes, according to the Windsor Police Service. But roads around the riverfront, including Riverside Drive and Ouellette Avenue and McDougall Street north of Wyandotte Street, will close at 6 p.m. as related festivities get underway. Vehicles parked in the restricted areas labelled "no-parking zones" will be ticketed and towed at the owner's expense, police warned on Facebook. Transit Windsor is offering free bus services for the evening. There will also be park n' ride shuttle buses from Devonshire Mall between approximately 6 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. Shuttles will return to the mall from a pickup location across from the Windsor Arena on McDougall Street near Wyandotte Street W. immediately following the fireworks until approximately 12:15 a.m. or until all passengers in line have boarded a bus back to the mall. Transit Windsor is asking people to bring non-perishable food donations for its Stuff the Transit Windsor Bus initiative. The Windsor Police Service is encouraging parents and guardians to take the following steps to keep children safe Monday evening: Take a photo of your child at the start of the evening in the clothing they are wearing. Ensure your child has identification (if age-appropriate) and knows a parent or a guardian's phone number. Choose a designated meeting spot ahead of time in case you become separated. If your child becomes lost, report it immediately to the nearest police officer. Environment Canada is forecasting an extreme heat event beginning Sunday and extending into Tuesday with highs Monday expected to reach 35 C to 37 C. "I would say it's going to be fairly dangerous to be outdoors, especially for long durations of time," said meteorologist Steven Flisfeder. He advised people to stay hydrated, seek out shade as much as possible, and have a cool place to go. High humidity can also aggravate medical conditions such as asthma, he added.

Windsor high schools transition to public transit
Four local high schools in Windsor will transition to regular public transit, starting this school year on September 2. The City of Windsor announced this initiative for Holy Names Catholic High School, St. Joseph's Catholic High School, Riverside Secondary School and Vincent Massey Secondary School. Stephan Habrun, the acting executive director of Transit Windsor said that the change to public transit will provide students with greater access to the city. 'As we work to implement the Transit Windsor Master Plan, our system is becoming more connected, efficient and responsive to the needs of our community,' said Habrun in a statement. Starting this spring, city staff will visit local high schools to provide detailed information about the routes, help students download transit apps, offer tips for riding the bus and answer questions. The city website will be updated with new route schedules and resources for students and families. The new routes will be live on Labour Day weekend. Jelena Payne, Deputy CAO and Commissioner of Economic Development said the transition plan will add 15,000 service hours to the overall system. 'We understand that transitions and changes can be uncomfortable, so we are working to help students gain confidence in using the public transit system while ensuring they continue to receive reliable and safe travel options,' said Payne in a statement.

Detroit-Windsor Tunnel remains open during Detroit Grand Prix
The Detroit-Windsor Tunnel will remain open to motorists throughout the pre-race track setup and the 2025 Detroit Grand Prix, but there are some changes. From May 29-June 1, motorists are encouraged to show a dashboard placard to access the Tunnel. Placards are available at the Windsor and Detroit toll plazas. Traffic will be re-routed to allow motorists to enter and exit the tunnel safely without entering the race route. When heading from Windsor to Detroit, take a right turn onto Jefferson upon exiting the tunnel and head to I-375. Heading from Detroit to Windsor, the best route is also I-375 to access Jefferson Avenue and follow posted signage to reach the tunnel entrance. Motorists are encouraged to plan ahead and allow a few extra minutes for travel due to the increased traffic and security in the area. For Tunnel Bus users: From May 28 to June 1, Transit Windsor will operate a shortened route between the Transit Terminal in downtown Windsor and the Detroit Tunnel Plaza only.
