Broome County DA announces funding for 5 local police departments

Five Broome County police agencies will be receiving additional funding to expand community policing during the summer months. Broome County District Attorney Paul Battisti, joined by local officials, announced on June 17 that his office would be investing $52,500 from the Traffic Diversion Fund, which collects money from traffic tickets, into local law enforcement. The Binghamton Police Department, Endicott Police Department, Johnson City Police Department, Vestal Police Department and the Broome County Sheriff's Office will be receiving $10,500 each. Battisti said the awarded money will be used for existing community policing initiatives in any way that the departments deem necessary to continue the expansion of dedicated bike, foot and car patrols around neighborhoods, parks and other community spaces. "All law enforcement agencies in Broome County have strong, robust community policing initiatives and today's infusion will only enhance their productivity," Battisti said. The resolution to authorize the use of the funding garnered from the Traffic Diversion Program was approved by the Broome County Legislature on June 12. Johnson City Police Chief Brent Dodge said at the press conference the money his department receives will be going toward bike and foot patrols in the village's downtown area and at neighborhood parks. Endicott Police Chief Patrick Garey said the Village of Endicott Police Department plans to put bike and foot patrols in all business districts and neighborhoods in the village throughout the summer. Erin Brockovich is the movie you need to stream on Peacock this month

The year 2000 was an excellent one for director Steven Soderbergh. He directed not one, but two Best Picture nominees. Plus, Soderbergh took home the Oscar for Best Director for Traffic. The other movie he made that year is even better than Traffic. Erin Brockovich, starring Julia Roberts at the peak of her powers, follows a single mother of three children who discovers a massive coverup being perpetuated by a major energy company. Here are three reasons you should check it out while it's on Peacock: Recommended Videos We also have guides to the best new movies to stream, the best movies on Netflix, the best movies on Hulu, the best movies on Amazon Prime Video, the best movies on Max, and the best movies on Disney+. Julia Roberts has never been better People don't often win Oscars for the movie they delivered their best performance in, but that was absolutely the case here. Roberts' version of Erin Brockovich is a firecracker — a volatile woman who cares deeply about the real people affected by this cover-up and becomes determined to help them. Crucially, the movie suggests that Brockovich's kindness and her willingness to listen are central to the discoveries made in the case and to ultimately get these people the kind of settlement they deserve. Brockovich is highly competent, even if that competence is packaged a little unconventionally. The movie is a delicate tonal balance Because it's based on a true story, Erin Brockovich always feels grounded in some sort of reality. At the same time, the movie is always both funny and at least some degree, tense, in part because Brockovich and the small law firm she works for are going up against a massive conglomerate. The movie works because it's perfectly paced and because it knows exactly how to make all its characters feel interesting and alive. That's a result of great performances, but also thanks to Soderbergh's complete mastery of the moviemaking process. It's cast with people who feel real Julia Roberts is one of the most beautiful and radiant people alive. She's perfectly cast as Brockovich, who often feels larger than life. Soderbergh then chose to fill out the rest of the cast with actors like Albert Finney and Aaron Eckhart, who are plausible as people you might meet in a rural part of California. The movie's verisimilitude is key to its overall effect, and the actors that inhabit the movie's universe are key to that working. While there's a lot of pain and turmoil in this movie's plot, it doesn't hurt to have a happy ending. You can watch Erin Brockovich on Peacock.

Auto driver attempts to run over traffic DCP at GB road, arrested

THANE: A 27-year-old auto-rickshaw driver was arrested on Thursday night for allegedly attempting to run over the deputy commissioner of police (Traffic), Pankaj Shirsath, while he was managing traffic at Ghodbunder Road on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 9.20pm when DCP Shirsath and other traffic police personnel were regulating traffic along the busy stretch at Manpada. The accused, Hemant Santosh Verma, reportedly ignored instructions from the traffic police and sped his rickshaw directly toward the DCP and hit him. Shirsath suffered serious injuries to his shoulder and was immediately taken to the Bethany Hospital in Vartak Nagar. He was under medical observation for a day before being discharged. 'This was not an accident. It was a deliberate act that endangered the life of a senior officer in uniform. When the accused realised his fault, he fled from the spot. We immediately formed a team to arrest the accused, ' said an officer from Chitalsar police station. An FIR was registered based on a complaint lodged by Nayan Pandav, 27, a traffic police officer who witnessed the incident. The police have registered a case under sections 109 (attempt to murder), 281 (rash driving), 125 (carelessly endangers human life or safety), and 132 (assaulting a public servant to deter them from performing their duty) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023, as well as 184 (dangerous driving), 179 (disregarding a lawful order), and 125 (obstruction of driver) of the Motor Vehicles Act. Following a swift investigation, the police tracked and arrested Verma around 10.15pm on Thursday. 'We acted quickly using CCTV footage and witness accounts. We will present the accused before the court, and ensure all legal steps are being followed,' said police sub-inspector Prashant Sangle, the investigating officer of the case.
