Tired Aaron-Wooi Yik know how to survive [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: Men's pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik seemed to have learnt to fight fatigue as they produced another extraordinary effort today to reach the Malaysia Masters final. World No. 3 Aaron-Wooi Yik's win over Denmark's world No. 1 Kim Astrup-Anders Skaarup Rasmussen has assured the hosts of the Malaysia Masters title after 12 years. Aaron-Wooi Yik are also a match away from completing their first career hat-trick after winning the Asia Championships last month and Thailand Open last week. Compatriots Man Wei Chong-Tee Kai Wun had outplayed Japan's world No. 20 Takuro Hoki-Yugo Kobayashi 21-12, 21-14 in the other semi-final. Despite physical and mental exhaustion, Aaron-Wooi Yik outwitted Astrup-Rasmussen 21-19, 17-21, 21-15 in 64 minutes. This will be the fourth time the Super 500 tournament features an all-Malaysia final. Goh V Shem-Lim Khim Wah secured the nation's last title in 2013, beating compatriots Koo Kien Keat-Tan Boon Heong. It will also be the first time Aaron-Wooi Yik reached a final at home while Wei Chong-Kai Wun will feature in their second after the 2023 Malaysia Masters. However, Wooi Yik wasn't thinking about the records and was relieved to have survived a difficult clash against Astrup-Rasmussen. "It's very difficult in back-to-back tournaments, but we tried to overcome it as this is something new for us," said Wooi Yik. "We didn't want to think at the start that we cannot play. We have to figure out what we can do in every match." Aaron, who is looking forward to giving the fans a great show, said: "We just hope to play a really good game for everyone who comes here to support us. Winning or losing in secondary," said Aaron. "I think we have to treat the match against Wei Chong-Kai Wun (their head-to-head record is 2-2) tomorrow like training. Of course, we also want to win but the most important thing is that the title has been confirmed for Malaysia. "There will be some kind of tiredness playing back-to-back tournaments, so it doesn't really matter for us." Results: Semi-finals (Malaysians unless stated) Men's singles: K. Srikanth (Ind) bt Yushi Tanaka (Jpn) 21-18, 24-22; Li Shi Feng (Chn) bt Kodai Naraoka (Jpn) 21-15, 21-15. Aaron-Wooi Yik pick up where they left off in Malaysia Masters opener [WATCH]
KUALA LUMPUR: Former world champions Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik got their Malaysia Masters campaign off to a composed start at the Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil on Wednesday. Fresh off their Thailand Open triumph, the world No. 3 overcame Taiwan's world No. 17 Chiu Hsiang Chieh-Wang Chi Lin 21-18, 21-16 in a steady straight-games win to book their place in the second round. Despite the smooth performance, Aaron admitted concerns over a short recovery period after back-to-back tournaments. "We just finished a tournament last week, so we haven't had enough rest. But it's not really a problem," said Aaron. "Our performance today was just okay. There's definitely room for improvement." Next up for Aaron-Wooi Yik is another Taiwanese combination — world No. 21 Liu Kuang Heng-Yang Po Han — whom they have never played before. Wooi Yik acknowledged the challenge of taking on unfamiliar opponents. "It's never easy when you haven't played a pair before," he said. "Even in Thailand, we had to battle hard against a French pair we'd never faced. You can't afford to take anyone lightly these days." "The level in men's doubles is incredibly high right now. Every pair brings something unique. There's no such thing as an easy match anymore." Wooi Yik credited their coach Herry IP for keeping them on track. "We prepare as best we can and trust the game plan. We're still learning from coach Herry, and that process is ongoing." He added that they remain a work in progress. "We know what we want to achieve on court, but we're still far from that level. It's a gradual journey." RESULTS FIRST ROUND (Malaysians unless stated) Men's singles: H. S. Eogene says first senior title a spark to fire him up for more
PETALING JAYA: It was relief for shuttler Eogene Ewe (pic) after ending his wait for a senior men's singles title in the Slovenian Open. Eogene fought hard to beat South Korea's Yoo Tae Bin 21-19, 12-21, 21-17 in an hour in Maribor on Sunday to clinch the International Series title. Although it was only a lower tier event, the breakthrough was still memorable for the 20-year-old, who is currently ranked No. 113 in the world. 'This win is memorable for me as it's my first title in a senior tournament. I wish more titles will follow this breakthrough,' said Eogene. 'I didn't think too much and just played my best here. I would like to say that this is a good start for me but I still need to focus and prepare for my next tournaments.' Eogene's previous best results were reaching the semi-finals in the International Challenge tournaments in Vietnam and at home last year. The youngster is looking to continue his good form when he competes next in the Austrian Open starting on Thursday. Meanwhile, reigning Malaysia Games (Sukma) champion Wong Ling Ching also won her first senior international crown in the women's singles by defeating Indonesia's Deswanti Nurtertiati 21-16, 21-15. The victory will come as a boost for Ling Ching after she initially decided to quit the sport and pursue her studies last November before reversing her decision and returning to the Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM). The Sarawakian, who is currently ranked No. 100, will be eager to build on her encouraging showing and move up the ranks. FINAL RESULTS Men's singles: Eogene Ewe (Mas) bt Yoo Tae Bin (Kor) 21-19, 12-21, 21-17. Men's doubles: Huang Tsung-i-Ling Ting-yu (Tpe) bt Jonathan Gosal-Adrian Pratama (Ind) 27-25, 19-21, 21-17.
