EXCLUSIVE Revealed: The UK's best BBQ spots this summer... does your town make the cut?
Newcastle has been revealed as the best place in the UK for a BBQ this summer. The latest findings come as Britain's temperature is set to soar into the 30s this weekend, with an amber heat-health alert being issued earlier today. London boroughs nabbed nearly half of the top 10 places to get a grill going, with Camden, Tower Hamlets, Wandsworth, Newham and Merton all making the cut, according to new data. North and South Tyneside were also strong contenders while locations in the South East like Epsom and Ewell, Hastings and Runnymede were the other top choices for a cookout. These ideal BBQ spots were decided after taking factors like green space access, temperatures, sunshine, rainfall and wind during the summer months into account. Areas in the South East benefit from more sunshine and less rain on average - crucial for a good grill - while the other top spots scored well in their relation to access to public parks. Tower Hamlets recorded the highest number of parks in a 1,000m radius, with 12 parks within walking distance of the centre. Locals could also enjoy the shortest journey to a green space at just 209 metres, though individual parks tended to be on the smaller side. 'What's particularly interesting is how the North East region performs strongly, with three locations in the top 10. 'This challenges the common perception that the south of England always offers the best outdoor summer experience. 'With average maximum temperatures above 27C during summer, these areas actually record higher peak temperatures than many southern locations, while still maintaining moderate wind speeds around 17.7mph.' On the other end of the grilling spectrum, places you might want to avoid setting up for a 'brai' include locations in Scotland, Wales and the South West. The Isles of Scilly, Pembrokeshire, Ceredigion and Cornwall all scored poorly - which may come as a surprise - mostly due to the strong winds that could make an outdoor meal take a bit of a battering. And while many of them are arguably more scenic then a sprawling metropolis, they were all far from a park or public garden. 'Wind speed emerges as a critical factor for BBQ success,' Mr Porcar said. The perfect BBQ spot required 'a balance of factors', he added. 'While weather is obviously important, having accessible green spaces nearby is equally necessary.' The study analysed 371 local authorities across the UK, ranking each based on eight key factors which was then scaled and weighted equally to produce a final score out of 100. This latest data comes after the UK has seen the mercury steadily rising into the late twenties - perfect for getting a grill going. Today, thermometers reached 30.1C (86.2F) by 1pm at St James's Park in London – making it the first day in 2025 to reach 30C and the hottest day of the year so far - and looked set to rise further to 32C (90F) this afternoon. There are expected similar highs tomorrow and 34C (93F) predicted for Saturday. Earlier, the Government's UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) activated a five-day alert from midday today until Monday morning amid concerns that the heat could cause 'a rise in deaths, particularly among those ages 65 and over or with health conditions'. Two women walk in the sunshine at St James's Park in London today as the heat continues A woman sunbathes near the fountains at Battersea Park in South West London today The warning said 'significant impacts are likely across health and social care services due to the high temperatures' along with 'increased demand for power exceeding capacity' and 'heat affecting the ability of the workforce to deliver services'. The UKHSA has previously placed most of England apart from the North under a lesser yellow heat-health until Sunday evening, but this has now been upgraded. It is the first amber heat-health alert to be issued for two years since September 2023. The heatwave is likely to officially end after Saturday, but the weather from Sunday into the middle of next week will stay warm with a range of 24C (75F) to 26C (79F). Horror moment car ploughs into pedestrian TWICE in front of onlookers as man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder
THIS is the horrifying moment a car reversed into a pedestrian - before ploughing into them a second time. One local watched on in horror as they filmed the incident, as the pedestrian was launched into the air by the force of the crash. 3 3 In the video, a white car with a sunroof can be seen swerving around a second black car - slamming into a pedestrian in the process. The unnamed walker in orange was knocked to the ground by the impact whilst a woman can be heard shouting in Tower Hamlets, in London, on Sunday. Then, the vehicle drove into the man again which propelled him into the air. As he hit the ground, the woman can be seen trying to pry open the car door whilst shouting: 'Open this f***ing car!' Turning around, she shouts for onlookers to 'call the police '. Finally, the people in the car emerged from the vehicle. One man wearing blue shorts immediately bolted from the vehicle and escaped on foot. Meanwhile, a man in grey robes silently waited next to the vehicle. The unnamed woman continued shouting at one of the other occupants - dressed in all black - but, like the other man, he ran away on foot. Shocked onlookers watched on in horror as the argument unfolded. Finally, the car's driver - dressed in neon blue - retrieves something from the car before escaping as well. This horrifying chain of events is understood to be one of two car crashes which took place in Tower Hamlets on June 14. In one of the incidents, the car collided with a man in his 20s, forcing emergency services to rush him to hospital. He was then treated for non-threatening injuries. A second man was also struck shortly during that collision, but his status is unknown. Police are now appealing to that second man to come forward to help them in their investigation. The second crash took place shortly after and saw all four of the people in the vehicle escaping on foot. The 40-year-old man struck by the car in that collision was rushed to hospital and has also been treated for non-threatening injuries. An 18-year-old has been arrested under suspicion of attempted murder, but three of the four people in the car have yet to be traced. A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police has said: 'Police are making urgent enquiries to trace the three other people in the car. 'Anybody who witnessed the incident – or who has information – should call 101, quoting crime reference 7432/14JUN.' 3

Woman, 33, stabbed mother to death at a child's birthday party
A woman who fatally stabbed a mother at a child's birthday party has been found guilty of murder. Hope Rowe, 33, attacked Charlotte Lawlor with a knife at a property in Stepney Green, east London, on Sept 15 last year. Emergency workers found Ms Lawlor, 31, in the foyer of the tower block in Tower Hamlets just before 2am with multiple stab injuries, after an attack witnessed by some of her family, children and guests at the party. Inner London Crown Court heard how Ms Lawlor had been stabbed by Rowe following an argument at the party. Rowe then drove away from the scene with her partner, Leigh Holder, 37. At around 2.10am, Holder's vehicle was stopped by armed police in Tower Hamlets. He told officers Rowe had jumped out shortly after leaving the crime scene, claiming he had no knowledge of her location. However, the court heard that Rowe left a voicemail on Holder's phone as they drove away together, which recorded her telling him that it was 'good' she had killed Ms Lawlor, before Holder instructed Rowe to dispose of the knife and to avoid the police. The knife was never found. At 7am the following day, the court heard Rowe went to Bethnal Green Police Station, where she was arrested on suspicion of murder. During a police interview, she provided no comment, and later claimed her actions were due to a momentary loss of control. On Friday, a jury at the London court found Rowe guilty of murder and Holder guilty of perverting the course of justice. Det Sgt Dean Musgrove, from the Met Police's specialist crime north unit, said: 'Hope Rowe launched a brutal attack on Charlotte Lawlor at what should have been a joyous occasion. 'Our thoughts are with the victim's family and friends, who will have to contend not only with the loss of a loved one, but with the trauma of having witnessed the killing. 'As if the killing was not senseless enough, Rowe then tried to deceive investigators, disposing of the knife before turning herself in. 'It still has not been found to this day, and both Rowe and her partner were incriminated by a voicemail accidentally recorded on Rowe's phone.' In a statement, the victim's parents said they were 'happy' with the verdict, adding: 'We would like to thank the jury for their attention during the trial. 'The family will never get over the loss and murder of Charlotte. It has destroyed us, leaving a gaping hole. Charlotte's son, Riley, has been left without a mum, and siblings without their older sister and best friend. Charlotte brought light to everyone's life.' Rowe and Holder will be sentenced at the court on July 9. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism. Free school meals for half a million for kids confirmed in spending review by Chancellor Rachel Reeves
HALF a million more kids will be eligible for free school meals, it's been confirmed by the Chancellor. As part of her spending review today, Rachel Reeves announced that every child in a Universal Credit household will now be eligible for state-sponsored lunches. 1 Addressing the House of Commons she said: "Last week, this government announced that Free School Meals will be extended to over half a million more children. "That policy alone will lift 100,000 children out of poverty from Tower Hamlets to Sunderland to Swansea." Currently, Universal Credit households must earn under £7,400 per year to qualify. The move is expected to save parents on benefits £500 a year, according to the Department for Education. Kids in UC households currently not eligible will be able to start claiming lunches from the start of the 2026 school year. The entitlement will apply in all settings where free school meals are available, including school-based nurseries and further-education settings. Most parents will be able to apply before the start of the new school year by providing a national insurance number. Education Secretary Bridget Philipson previously told The Sun the move was a "game changer". 'This will make a big difference to children's attendance and behaviour at school because we know that if kids are hungry, they don't concentrate well." The expansion of the scheme comes ahead of ahead of the government's Child Poverty Taskforce publishing a ten-year strategy to drive down poverty. Labour are also facing mounting pressure to scrap the two child benefit cap, If you are keen to apply for the support you need to do so via your local council. You can find out what council you are in by visiting Elsewhere, Rachel Reeves also vowed to pump £39billion to build more social and affordable housing across the UK, alongside a new rent policy for social housing starting in 2026. What age do kids get free school meals in the UK? In England, all eligible children from reception to year two qualify for free school meals - so kids aged roughly between four and seven. In Scotland, all children between four and nine will qualify, while in Wales, pupils aged around four get free school meals. But, of course, all primary school-aged children should be eligible for the scheme by the end of 2024. That means children between four and 11. In any part of the UK, from year three onwards, your children could qualify for free school meals. But this is when the eligibility criteria kicks in, meaning you'll need to be receiving certain benefits and your income may be taken into consideration. Currently, your child may be able to get free school meals if you get any of the following: Income Support income-based Jobseeker's Allowance income-related Employment and Support Allowance support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999 the guaranteed element of Pension Credit Child Tax Credit (provided you're not also entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual gross income of no more than £16,190) Working Tax Credit run-on - paid for 4 weeks after you stop qualifying for Working Tax Credit Universal Credit - if you apply on or after 1 April 2018 your household income must be less than £7,400 a year (after tax and not including any benefits you get) WHAT OTHER HELP IS AVAILABLE? You get child benefit if you're responsible for bringing up a child who is under 16 or under 20 if they are in approved education or training The payment is used to help parents cover the costs of childcare. It is paid at two weekly rates - £26.05 for your eldest or only child and £17.25 for any additional children. Payments are usually made every four weeks, on a Monday or Tuesday, but sometimes are made weekly. If you are claiming child benefit for a child under 12, you also receive National Insurance (NI) credits. NICs count towards your State Pension so claiming the benefit can be useful if you are missing any. Parents can also get help with free food vouchers through the government's Household Support Fund. What help is available for parents? CHILDCARE can be a costly business. Here is how you can get help. 30 hours free childcare - Parents of three and four-year-olds can apply for 30 hours free childcare a week. To qualify you must usually work at least 16 hours a week at the national living or minimum wage and earn less than £100,000 a year. Tax credits - For children under 20, some families can get help with childcare costs. Childcare vouchers - If your employer offers childcare vouchers you can get up to £55 a week in tax and national insurance savings. You pay for your childcare before your tax contributions are taken out. This scheme is open to new joiners until October 4, 2018, when it is planned that tax-free childcare will replace the vouchers. Tax-free childcare - Available to working families and the self-employed, for every £8 you put in the government will add an extra £2.
