Tennis-Boulter hat-trick bid ends in Nottingham

NOTTINGHAM (Reuters) -Katie Boulter's bid for a hat-trick of Nottingham titles came to an end as the Briton was beaten 6-3 3-6 6-4 by American McCartney Kessler at the WTA 250 event on Friday. Eighth seed Boulter secured a service break early in the deciding set but Kessler stormed back to reach the semi-finals. Boulter became Britain's number one when winning the Nottingham title in 2023 and held it until being knocked off top spot by Emma Raducanu this week. Kessler only recorded her first main draw Tour-level win on grass last week at Queen's but is now eyeing a title on the surface. She will face either Slovak Rebecca Sramkova or Czech Linda Noskova in the semi-final. Saturday's other semi-final will feature Ukraine's Dayana Yastremska and Poland's Magda Linette. Yastremska beat Canada's fifth seed Leylah Fernandez 6-3 7-6(6), while Linette beat Clara Tauson 6-2 7-5 to reach a career-first semi-final on grass. 'S-HERTOGENBOSCH – Carson Branstine upset women's top seed Liudmila Samsonova while fellow Canadian Gabriel Diallo downed men's eighth seed Jordan Thompson on Wednesday at the Libema Open grass-court tennis tournament. Branstine, ranked No. 231 in the world and playing in her first WTA Tour-level main draw, completed the 6-4, 5-7, 6-1 victory with a dominant third set after the match was suspended Tuesday night due to darkness with the players tied at a set each. Branstine didn't face a break point in the final set while breaking Russia's Samsonova, ranked 18th in the world, twice in four chances. The 24-year-old Canadian qualifier is set to face Romania's Elena-Gabriela Ruse in second-round action on Thursday. Montreal's Diallo came back from a set down to beat Australia's Thompson 4-6, 6-1, 7-5 and advance to the men's quarterfinals. Diallo, ranked 55th on the ATP Tour, had 11 aces and was broken just once on 10 chances as he picked up his second career win on grass. He converted three of the seven break chances he had against Thompson, who is ranked 37th in the world. Diallo will next face third seed Karen Khachanov of Russia, who needed a third-set tiebreaker to get past American qualifier Mackenzie McDonald on Wednesday. In women's doubles quarterfinal action, Branstine and Bianca Andreescu of Mississauga, Ont., lost 7-5, 6-3 to the second-seeded team of Hungary's Fanny Stollar and Russia's Irina Khromacheva. Andreescu is still alive in the singles tournament and will face seventh seed Lulu Sun of New Zealand in the second round on Thursday. Novak Djokovic becomes only the third man to reach ridiculous tennis milestone

Novak Djokovic celebrated turning 38 on Thursday and had not won a title since claiming Olympic gold last summer, but claimed his 100th ATP Tour-level singles title in Geneva Novak Djokovic celebrated turning 38 on Thursday two days late - by claiming his 100th ATP Tour level singles title. The Serbian landed a hard-fought victory over Poland's Hubert Hurkacz in the final of the Geneva Open. Djokovic fought back from losing the first set and being a break down in the decider to beat Hurkacz 5-7 7-6 (2) 7-6 (2) in a gruelling contest lasting three hours and four minutes. It means that Djokovic is just the third man in the Open era – after Jimmy Connors and Roger Federer – to win 100 ATP titles. ‌ It comes after Djokovic had failed to win a title since claiming Olympic gold in Paris last summer, having suffered immediate exits from previous clay court events in Madrid and Monte Carlo. ‌ And another painful defeat looked on the cards when he served two double faults to lose his serve in the opening game of the final set, but Hurkacz played an error-strewn eighth game to allow Djokovic to level at 4-4. More costly errors from the big-serving Pole then allowed Djokovic to ease through the tie-break and complete the perfect preparation for his bid to win a record-breaking 25th grand slam title in the French Open. 'I had to work for it, that's for sure,' a relieved Djokovic said in an on-court interview before the ball boys and girls physically formed the number 100 in tribute at the presentation ceremony. 'Huby was probably closer to the victory the entire match than I was. I had some chances to break his serve in the first set, I didn't do it and then had a bad game that ended up with a double fault on set point. 'All of a sudden the match went to his side in a sense and I was obviously just trying to hang in there. 'I don't know how I broke his serve, he probably broke himself in the third when he was 4-3 up but this is what happens on this level, the highest level, a few points decide the winner. 'An incredible match, 7-6 in the third with a full stadium, beautiful atmosphere. So I'm just grateful to clinch the 100th here.' Djokovic's win came after he saw off Brit Cameron Norrie in the semi-final. He will face American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round at Roland Garros, which starts on Sunday.
