Law enforcement runs from Fischer to Champaign for Special Olympics
CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — It was all smiles across Champaign County on Friday as law enforcement participated in an annual tradition — the Law Enforcement Torch Run benefiting Special Olympics. The Torch Run is the largest public awareness and fundraising event for Special Olympics Illinois. In Champaign County, officers started running at 5:30 in the morning in Fischer. Urbana police officer recalls near-death experience while on the job The route took them through Rantoul, Thomasboro, Urbana and Champaign and ended at the Olympic Monument at Parkland College in the early afternoon. That's a distance of 17 miles. Gymnast Summer Nagele said the Special Olympics program creates fun opportunities for athletes all over the world and she was among the many who were helped by it. 'I really like Special Olympics, and it has helped me learn a whole lot of different sports and see which ones I like and which ones I don't like,' Nagele said. Torch runs similar to Friday's happened all over Illinois and will continue into next week, when the Illinois Special Olympics Summer Games start in Bloomington. Binghamton Firefighters say ‘farewell' to another brother
HILLCREST, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – Binghamton firefighters gathered to say farewell to another comrade on Wednesday, continuing what has already been a very difficult year for the department. The funeral for fireman Scott Pavlick was held at Saint Francis of Assisi Church in Hillcrest. Pavlick died unexpectedly last week at the age of 47 from a medical condition. This comes just months after fellow firefighter John 'J.R.' Gaudet died in the line of duty. He was a graduate of Chenango Forks and Ithaca College, where he was a record-setting swimmer. Pavlick was also a marathon runner. He joined the Binghamton Fire Department in 2008, attaining the rank of Lieutenant in 2023 and receiving several commendations for bravery. According to his obituary, Pavlick had a good sense of humor, a sharp wit, and a calm demeanor. His funeral procession drove past several Binghamton fire stations on its way to the church. Pavlick leaves behind his wife, Jodi, and 7-year-old son, Reagan. Donations to support his family are being collected by the Syracuse Fire Department Credit Union. SRO Productions presents ‘A New Brain'
JOHNSON CITY, N.Y. (WIVT/WBGH) – A semi-autobiographical musical that explores the healing powers of art and music is coming to the Schorr Family Firehouse Stage on Friday. SRO Productions is ending its season with William Finn's 'A New Brain.' The musical addresses Finn's personal experience with a life-threatening brain tumor and his subsequent recovery. Based loosely on Finn's own life, the story follows Gordon Michael Schwinn, a frustrated composer for a children's TV show, as he is diagnosed with a severe brain condition. The show discusses themes of mortality and fear while celebrating life, love, and friendship. Director Douglas Harrington emphasizes the importance of taking care of your mind and body. He encourages audience members not to compare their journey to someone else's. 'One of the biggest takeaways from the show, that I hope people take away, is that where you are in life is the right place to be right now. Each person has a different path,' said Harrington. A New Brain will have a two-weekend run. Show times are at 7:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays and 2 p.m. on Sundays. Tickets start at $23. Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run makes its move through Los Angeles County
Law enforcement agencies throughout Southern California are carrying the torch ahead of the Special Olympics Summer Games, stretching from San Diego to Los Angeles – ending in Long Beach where the June 6-8 games take place. The Southern California leg of the torch run began May 27 in San Diego, and on Monday, the Los Angeles tour began with LAPD South Traffic athletes in Wilmington. In 2024, the Law Enforcement Torch Run (LETR), Southern California raised $1.2 million with over 200 law enforcement agencies participating. Funds raised support Special Olympics athletes with equipment and training for the Special Olympics. On Monday, law enforcement relay teams will take turns carrying the "Flame of Hope" through the Los Angeles County communities of San Pedro, Lomita, Palos Verdes, South Bay beach cities, through LAX, and into Culver City. The relay continues Tuesday morning with the LAPD Wilshire division, picks up Wednesday through North Hollywood and Burbank, and continues Thursday through Hollywood and West LA. On Friday, LASD Compton is one of the agencies carrying the torch until the Long Beach PD carries it to the final destination at the Cal State Long Beach Pyramid. This weekend's competition consists of hundreds of local Special Olympics athletes competing in track and field, basketball, flag football and more. Opening ceremonies take place at Walter Pyramid, June 6 at 6:30 p.m.

Special Olympics RI Summer Games continue Saturday
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, R.I. (WPRI) — The Special Olympics Rhode Island Summer Games continued on Saturday at URI's Kingston campus. Today's events include bowling, powerlifting, track & field, and soccer. On Friday morning, bowling and track & field events were held, before the Torch Run ceremony was held at the R.I. State House and followed by the Opening Ceremony at Meade Stadium. On Sunday, the games continue at St. George's School in Middletown with swimming events.
