Why Jobe Bellingham is refusing to wear family name as he follows in brother Jude's footsteps at Borussia Dortmund
Jobe Bellingham made his Borussia Dortmund debut off the bench at the Club World Cup on Tuesday night, with the 19-year-old opting to wear his first name on his shirt. Bellingham had followed in the footsteps of his older brother Jude by joining the Bundesliga giants this summer. Jude had starred for Dortmund between 2020 to 2023, before earning a stunning £113m move to Real Madrid. With Jobe earning comparisons to Jude early in his career, having both come through Birmingham City 's academy, the teenager has stressed he is seeking to forge his own path in his career. Having made his Birmingham debut with Bellingham on the back of his shirt, Jobe opted to drop his surname after moving to Sunderland in 2023. Then Sunderland boss Tony Mowbray explained Jobe had made the decision in order not to be seen as living off his brother's name and achievements. 'I think he's trying to create his own identity,' Mowbray said. 'He doesn't want to live off the back of his brother's name, he wants to be the footballer that he is and show people what he can do.' The move required approval from the EFL and was done so the younger of the two brothers could forge his own identity in the sport. Dortmund appeared to make a nod to Jobe's decision when announcing his £32m signing earlier this month. The Bundesliga club shared a video to unveil Bellingham featuring the words 'The name is Jobe'. 'I've been here before, watching games, hearing the fans chant, feeling the power of these colours, this place stuck with me,' Bellingham said in the video. 'Now I'm here again, not to watch and not follow in anyone's footsteps. 'The same city, the same stadium, but the story that's ours to write now.' After joining Dortmund earlier this month, Bellingham was included in their squad for the Club World Cup. The England under-21 international made his debut as a 59th minute substitute against Brazilian side Fluminense. Dortmund were ultimately held to a 0-0 draw in their opening match of the tournament. The German giants will face Mamelodi Sundowns and Ulsan HD in their remaining group matches at the tournament in United States. Bellingham joined following two impressive seasons at Sunderland, who he helped earn promotion back to the Premier League last month. He played 43 matches in all competitions for the Black Cats last season and was named as the Championship Young Player of the Season.

Mason will be leader that West Brom need
New West Bromwich Albion head coach Ryan Mason will be "the leader we need", said the club's sporting director Andrew 33, is settling into his first full-time management role at The Hawthorns after signing a three-year former Tottenham midfielder spent seven years on the coaching staff at Spurs and Nestor said that experience, Mason's character and vision for the future of the Baggies were key factors in making him "the right person for the job"."We went through a thorough and considerate approach," Nestor said."We wanted to ensure that we gave enough time to really evaluate a short, targeted list of candidates. "As a club, we're constantly evaluating talent, just like we would players. Last year we had developed a short targeted list of potential head coaches in case we would need to make a change, and Ryan has been on that list since the start." Mason the 'forward-thinking leader' The sudden departure of the popular Carlos Corberan to Valencia at Christmas had Albion scrambling for a replacement at a crucial time of last move to bring former boss Tony Mowbray back did not work, leaving James Morrison to oversee the last two games of the campaign with the club's Championship play-off hopes said changes in "timing and availability" brought Mason seriously into the frame."He has developed a lot of respect in the football industry and that's a reason he was on the list to begin with," Nestor told WBA TV."We feel like, given his experiences, his character and the discussions we've had around our vision for our club, he's the right person for the job."Mason, who won his only England cap in a friendly against Italy in 2015, had two spells in interim charge at Spurs and worked under Jose Mourinho, Antonio Conte and, most recently, Ange Postecoglou as the club won their first trophy for 17 years in the Europa also brings the experience of his playing career with him, despite that being cut short following a serious head injury suffered in a game against Chelsea in 2018."He's had an incredible football journey," Nestor said."As a player, he worked his way through the football pyramid, he established himself as a Premier League player and played for his country. "While he was in the Premier League he played under top managers such as Mauricio Pochettino, who Ryan has told me has really influenced how he sees his coaching philosophy and playing style today."As a coach, he's worked at different levels. He's worked in an elite academy, he's worked on individual player development for young players as well as world-class senior players. "He's really seemed to have taken all those learnings and developed it into his own style. "It's a clear, forward-thinking coaching philosophy that we feel fits very well. "We feel all that experience will enable him to be the leader that we need." 'He has seen the mentality top players and managers have' Mason has said he is ready to take on a head coach role and the move to Albion "feels a good fit".That sense of synergy is echoed by Nestor, who highlighted alignment in "broader sporting department functions" such as analytics, data-led recruitment and developing young players as further reasons why Mason was the right pick."I would say the other factor, which perhaps is the most important in the end, is character," Nestor said."Ryan has developed a very good reputation as a player and a coach. He's shown very strong and steady character. He's been under the spotlight, he's been working at a place where there's always external pressures and he's risen above that. "He really has developed his own style and own ideas about how he wants to take Albion forward. "We feel like there's really good alignment there. I also think there's an advantage where he's seen best in class. He's seen the type of mentality that top managers and top players have. "I believe he has that mentality, and my hope is that he can instil that mentality within our squad and organisation."

Ryan Mason set for first permanent managerial role after agreeing West Brom move
Tottenham coach Ryan Mason is set to land his first managerial role after agreeing to take over at West Brom, the PA news agency understands. West Brom have been on the hunt for a new manager since Tony Mowbray was dismissed on April 21. Advertisement Mason quickly emerged as a leading candidate, but Spurs' roller-coaster 2024-25 campaign – in which they secured Europa League success – only ended on May 25. After a short holiday, the former England midfielder was given time to deliberate and has now decided to accept West Brom's offer. It brings a seven-year coaching career at Tottenham to an end for Mason, who progressed through the club's academy to also play 70 times for his boyhood team. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Ryan Mason (@ryan8mason) Mason was forced to cut short his playing career in 2018 at the age of 26 after he sustained a fractured skull in a Premier League match for Hull away to Chelsea a year earlier. A decade on from earning his solitary England cap against Italy, the London-born coach will embark on his first managerial role in the Championship. Highly-rated coach Mason held talks with Belgian club Anderlecht in October before a mutual decision was made to remain at Spurs, which enabled the 33-year-old to play his part in the club's first trophy since 2008. Advertisement After two previous caretaker stints at Tottenham, including leading the club into the 2021 Carabao Cup final, Mason has long been tipped for a future in management. Mason initially started coaching at youth level for Spurs upon his retirement in 2018 before being promoted to Antonio Conte's coaching staff three years later not long after a seven-game spell as interim boss. After a further two years as Tottenham first-team coach, Mason will take over West Brom after they finished ninth in the Championship. Advertisement Mowbray was dismissed in April after their play-off hopes ended despite only being hired in January to replace Carlos Corberan, who left to take over at Valencia. Mason, whose contract at Spurs was up this month, will be tasked with leading West Brom back into the top flight for the first time since 2021.

A brave appointment - patience might be required
Albion have taken their time with the appointment of Ryan Mason but for good reason. It's been 43 days since Tony Mowbray was sacked on Easter Monday after a 3-1 defeat by struggling Derby ended their play-off was appointed just over three weeks after Carlos Corberan left on Christmas Eve for Valencia and, in hindsight, it could be argued that it was rushed. In part due to games coming thick and fast as the Baggies looked to maintain their place in the top six, but also down to the collapse of the publicised plans to give the job to Swiss head coach Raphael of the unfortunate end to Mowbray's short second spell, there was pressure on club owners Bilkul to get this one right. They've bided their time to look for the right candidate, but also had to play a waiting game because Mason was never going to leave Tottenham while he was helping them win the Europa the ticker tape has settled on those celebrations, Mason has decided to leave the comfort of his boyhood club. Only time will tell if the gamble to give the 33-year-old his first senior head coach role will pay off, but just like the process of appointing him, patience may be required from the a brave appointment. The Baggies have gone from 61-year-old Mowbray - whose vast experience and success in the Championship was highlighted by Albion sporting director Andrew Nestor as a reason for his return in January – to a man almost half his predecessor's age and who has never managed at this level does have 13 games as a caretaker boss in the Premier League on his CV though and has worked his way up the coaching ranks at boyhood club Spurs. Since 2018, the former midfielder has also sat under the learning tree of some of the world's best managers, including Jose Mourinho and Antonio Albion fans were calling for a young head coach with fresh ideas, so he fits the bill on that front, but they will need to be patient with him. Mason is unlikely to hit the ground running like his former colleague Chris Davies, who left north London for Birmingham City last summer and dominated League One with a superior squad to the level they were doesn't have that right now at The Hawthorns, so perhaps there will be less pressure on him, and more on Nestor and his recruitment team to give him the tools to succeed. It's a work in progress but in hindsight the recruitment in the 2024-25 season had more misses than hits, so the decisions they make in this next window on which players to sign - and just as crucially which players to move on - will be just as important as the managerial decision they've just made.

Tottenham Hotspur coach takes Championship job with more appointments imminent
Blackburn Rovers' rivals, West Brom, have ended their search for a new head coach after sacking Tony Mowbray. Tottenham Hotspur Assistant, Ryan Mason, has penned a three-year deal to replace the former Rovers boss. The Baggies sacked Mowbray after they failed to make the Championship play-offs. Advertisement Mason has been identified as his successor and has decided to leave his role as part of Ange Postecoglou's backroom staff to take his first senior management role. He'd been part of the coaching team at Spurs for seven years under various managers. "This is a huge club with a fantastic infrastructure and an incredible fanbase, and I am excited about what we can achieve together," Mason said after being unveiled. Advertisement "I will bring with me a huge amount of enthusiasm, dedication and ambition, and look forward to a positive future together at such a fantastic club." Nigel Gibbs, who joins from Reading, has been named Mason's assistant, with Sam Pooley coming in from Rangers as the club's first-team coach and head of performance. More Championship jobs could be snapped up this week with Hull City close to appointing Bosnian boss Sergej Jakirovic. He is leaving Turkish outfit Kayserispor after half a season to take the gig in East Yorkshire. After flirting with relegation when the 48-year-old took charge in January, Jakirovic moved the club well away from danger to the relative comfort of 13th place, but is now heading for his first job in English football. It is a done deal, though Hull have to wait until a visa is secured which won't be until the end of the week at the earliest. Liam Manning's move from Bristol City to Norwich remains ongoing, with legalities being finalised. When that is complete, only Queens Park Rangers and the Robins will have vacancies for next season, though Leicester City may still choose to replace Ruud van Nistelroy and Danny Rohl's position at Sheffield Wednesday seems untenable.
