Watch skateboarding legend Tony Hawk enjoy Cork skatepark

Mr Hawk and his children skated in Mallow for more than two hours Skateboarding royalty Tony Hawk spent nearly two hours shredding at Mallow's skatepark on Monday. Mr Hawk is widely known as a legend of his sport, and he rated his experience in Mallow at a cool 10/10. The 57-year-old said, in a Reddit post from his official account, that he is currently on vacation in Ireland and his kids wanted to skate at least once. 'Who am I to deny them? In these situations, my role is strictly facilitative: finding a decent park, providing transportation and on-demand follow-cam,' he said. 'When they finally got their clips, I handed my phone to Miles to chase me around one time. 'We had the whole place to ourselves for nearly two hours btw. '10/10 would skate again.' Mr Hawk has strong ties to Ireland, and particularly Munster, as he married his wife Cathy Goodman at Adare Manor in Limerick in June 2015, and Mr Hawk attended the Nine Inch Nails gig at the 3Arena to celebrate. In an Instagram post, he posted clips from the Nine Inch Nails gig and skateboarding in Mallow with the caption: 'Best anniversary ideas: Ireland with kids, Nine Inch Nails & empty skateparks,' followed by an Ireland flag, a wedding ring, music notes and skateboard emojis. The San Diego man played an influential role in bringing the art of skateboarding to the mainstream in the late 1990s. He won over 70 competitions across his 17-year career and became the world's first skateboarder to land a '900' at the X Games, to inspire a generation of skaters. Avid Cork skateboarders may have missed their chance to meet Mr Hawk in Mallow, but there is an off-chance he might appear at a park elsewhere while he holidays in Ireland. Mr Hawk's legacy has been immortalised in eponymous video games. Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 and 4, which originally hit the shelves in 2001 and 2002 respectively, have been authentically remade and will be available from July 11.

Watch: Legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk filmed skating in Mallow

He may have officially retired two decades ago, but that didn't stop the world's most recognisable skateboarder from hitting up a skatepark in Co Cork earlier this week. On Monday, 57-year-old Tony Hawk, widely regarded as one of — if not the most — influential skateboarder of all time, shared a video of himself and his family skating in Mallow Skatepark. In videos posted to his official Instagram and Reddit accounts, Hawk revealed they had the run of the park for more than two hours. "While on vacation in Ireland, our kids wanted to skate at least once. Who am I to deny them?" he wrote. "In these situations, my role is strictly facilitative: finding a decent park, providing transportation and on-demand follow-cam." After his family, who are all excellent skateboarders in their own right, had filmed their clips, Hawk asked his son Miles to film him putting a run of tricks together. "We had the whole place to ourselves for nearly two hours btw. 10/10 would skate again," Hawk added. In his discipline of vert skating, that is skating and performing tricks on a vert ramp, he is a trailblazer and pioneer. In a professional career spanning 25 years, the Californian competed in and won events the world over, inventing more than 100 tricks along the way. His most legendary feat is, perhaps, the "900" — a trick involving the completion of two-and-a-half mid-air revolutions on the board above a vert ramp. Until Hawk completed the trick in 1999, after more than a decade worth of attempts, it was thought the trick was so technically demanding it would be practically impossible. If the 900 made Hawk an extreme sports star in the US, it was the video game that bears his name that turned him into a household name, and his sport into a global phenomenon. The Tony Hawk's video game series has sold more than 1.4 billion units, pulling in over $2bn in sales since the release of the first instalment, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater for PlayStation 1 in 1999. The most recent instalment, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2, a remake of the first two titles in the series, sold more than a million copies within the first two weeks of its release. The next instalment in the series, Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 + 4, a remake of the third and fourth games of the series, is set for release next month. Skateboarder Covell rebounds after Paris disappointment

Tenacious teen Chloe Covell has finally cracked her first World Skateboarding Tour victory, with the young Australian victorious in Rome. Competing internationally for the past three years, Covell's long-awaited win comes on the back of being included as a playable character in the latest remake of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video game. The daughter of former NRL player Luke Covell, she was hand-picked by the legendary Hawk for the iconic game. Covell captured the Australian public's attention at the Paris Olympics last year when she was bidding to become the country's youngest ever gold medallist. Competing in the final of the street discipline, the then 14-year-old was in tears midway through the medal round when she was unable to land any of her five tricks and finished last of the eight finalists. But in Rome Covell, who is from Tweed Heads in northern NSW, was all smiles after laying down a flawless run in the final. She entered the deciding run as the hot favourite after topping the quarters and semi-finals, with Brazil's Olympic champion Rayssa Leal missing out. Covell produced her best score, 89.79, in her final run to hold a seven point lead going into the trick section. Instead of playing it safe after two falls and requiring just a 71.22 for victory, Covell went large and nailed a superb frontside 50-50 kickflip to win by more than 20 points from Japan's Funa Nakayama and Ibuki Matsomoto. Sora Shirai won the men's event. Congratulations to team rider Chloe Covell for winning @worldskatesb in Rome! 🥇 — Bones Bearings (@Bonesbearings) June 16, 2025 A beaming Covell was almost speechless after the performance. "I'm so excited like my words can't even come out of my mouth right now, I'm just super stoked," Covell said. "I was the most nervous I've ever been because I know I can do this trick and I was just a little bit sketchy for the first two, so yeah, I just took some breaths and did what I had to do. "Having like a first win at a competition, like a competition I haven't won before is just amazing."

Australian teen Olympian Chloe Covell reveals iconic new role

Chloe Covell has had the kind of sporting career most people can only dream of. She's competed in the Olympics for Australia, she's won gold at the X Games and is considered one of the greatest street-style skateboarders currently in the sport. And now, she has just been made a playable character in the remake of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater + video game, a release which brings two of the most iconic sports games to modern consoles for the very first time. At just 15 years old, she has just started her senior year of high school. Her dad (former NRL player Luke Covell) was a teenager when the original version of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3 released in October 2001. The Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games were revolutionary when they first came out, changing world wide perceptions of skateboarding, and bringing attention to the sport. It made Tony Hawk a household name, and made kids in Australia aware of other legendary skaters through the roster of real life athletes they could play as in the video game. Including Covell in the updated game was a no-brainer for the developers. In fact, she was hand-picked for inclusion by none other than Tony Hawk himself. At a recent event in Los Angeles, Hawk exclusively told 'I saw her skate X Games before she qualified for the Olympics. I remember her trick selection, her sense of confidence at a young age, and I was like, 'she's got to be in it'.' At the same event, Rodney Mullen, a man who invented many of the most famous modern skateboarding tricks including the ollie, kickflip, heelflip and impossible, and is considered the 'Godfather of freestyle skating' was similarly impressed by Covell's skill. 'Oh my God. Blows my mind to see that much talent coming in.' However, even with all the praise and accolades she's getting, Covell remains as laid back and down to earth as you'd expect from a skateboarder. 'That they [Tony Hawk and Rodney Mullen] were even just speaking about me is pretty crazy, because they're really good skaters, and really inspirational to me' For Covell, the experience of having her head scanned into the game was a logistically challenging one, because of the timing.' I had to go to Activision, and it was during school time, so I had to have a tutor. But it was all really fun.' While many people would get choice paralysis when picking an outfit to be immortalised in a video game that will be played by people all over the world (the remake of Tony Hawk Pro Skater 1+2 sold one million copies in the first two weeks of release Covell found the process easy. 'I just picked my favourite outfit at the time.' While most of her friends had never heard of the Tony Hawk Pro Skater video games before because 'they're not skaters', Covell's friends are supportive. 'They think it's pretty cool and all of them said they're gonna get it and play it as me as the character, so that will be pretty funny.' As for Covell, she admits that her skating skills are better in the real world than the digital one, but she plans on splitting her play time between all the playable skaters in the video game. 'There are lots of legendary skaters on there, but it would also be fun to play as myself.' Back when the original games came out, there weren't many female skaters included, nor were there many female skaters at the parks. According to Covell, the sport is now seeing more of a gender balance, with so many new athletes picking up a board. '[The skating scene in Australia] is really good. Since the Olympics, there's been so many more young kids getting into it, especially girls,' she said. 'It's really amazing to see because even way before I started skating, there was like, no girls at the skate park and when I started skating, sometimes there were girls, and now there's always girls in the skate park.' She puts this shift down to Skateboarding's inclusion in the Olympics. 'I feel like it was, mostly the Olympics because there's a girls division, so I feel like the girls see it and they think it's cool, so they start trying.' Now that she's won the X Games, represented her country and been included in the most influential skateboarding video game series of all time, Covell has a new goal on the horizon: perfecting her favourite trick. 'My go to trick that I would usually do, that I'm still trying to work on to get bigger and better at, is switch kick flips down really big steps. I can do them, but I just want to be consistent.' Tony Hawk Pro Skater 3+4 will be available in stores from the 11th of July.
