‘I never thought I would marry and have children': What made Ed Kavalee change his mind

This story is part of the June 22 edition of Sunday Life. See all 15 stories. Ed Kavalee is a comedian best known for being a regular on Network Ten's Have You Been Paying Attention? Here, the 45-year-old talks about being looked after by his older sister, his celebrity crush frequenting his former workplace and how he met his wife. I never got to know my maternal grandmother, Betty – she died when I was young. She was very close to my mother, Macy. Mum felt that loss as she was a single mother raising two young children. Mum has always been a 'head down and get on with the job' type of person. Mum met my older sister Tippy's father – a Thai student – in Australia, and they married and lived in Asia. They divorced after a few years, but I carry his surname. Mum was working at the Oriental Hotel in Bangkok when she met my dad, Charles. She was in charge of looking after high-profile guests. Dad was known as the 'duck-feather king' in Thailand; he was an Aussie businessman who had factories that made down and duck-feather products. When Charles found out my mum was pregnant with me, he didn't want to know. She became ill and moved back to Australia. After I was born, Mum worked as a public servant, an interior designer and even modelled. She didn't get to go to university as her father discouraged it. Tippy looked after me when Mum worked. That wasn't easy for her, as she was a child herself, but I am forever grateful. She has a Thai softness about her. She went to boarding school when I was nine. Mum did remarry once. It wasn't a wonderful situation. After that, I don't remember her having many boyfriends. I would have loved that for her – to have someone. But she didn't pine for what wasn't to be – she dealt with life and kept moving. I remember seeing improv [improvisational theatre] for the first time while studying for an arts degree in Sydney. Mum said if that's something you want to do, then do it, but warned it was a hard road. She got me to meet a friend of hers, a producer who gave me advice. I had a celebrity crush

ITV Dancing on Ice star who quit show opens up on moment that led to injury

Dancing on Ice's Josh Jones has opened up about the injury that forced him out of the ITV competition just hours before the latest episode was set to air. It was announced earlier today (January 26) that the 32-year-old comedian from Failsworth had to pull out of the skating competition after sustaining an injury in rehearsal. He was set to appear in the third episode with professional skating partner Tippy Packard. Josh said he was 'annoyed' by his early exit and would miss spending time with Tippy. He even revealed they spent New Year's Eve together. The cyclist and swimmer took to her Instagram page to share snaps of her leg in a cast after fracturing her left ankle weeks before the show even began. Josh, who hosts the historical gossip podcast Dead Drama, joined Holly Willoughby and Stephen Mulhern in the studio and said: "So we were skating and then I went over on my ankle." He added: "And then kind of like twisted my I'm annoyed because I've got a cold sore as well. So I've got a lump on my leg and my ankle." Stephen sked if he had anything to say to the audience as they were the ones who had kept him in, Birmingham Live reports. Josh then said: "Thank you so much. You've got weird taste but I appreciate it." Holly said everyone was loving their performance last week, and said they had shown 'real promise' in their routine. Asked about his relationship with Tippy, Josh added: "That's the saddest bit because we get on so much. She's been to my house, I've cooked her a roast and we just like chilling with each other." Tippy praised Josh's skills on the ice and said his exit was a 'shame'. She said: "We could have done really well, he had so much potential to bring so many laughs to the competition. It's a shame we won't see that journey." Fans sent Josh their consolations on X. One wrote: "Aww poor Josh," adding a crying and broken heart emoji. Another fan said: "Get well soon Josh. #DancingOnIce." Dancing on Ice returns next Sunday on ITV.
