Cardinals No. 3 Prospect Dazzles in Double-A Return

Cardinals No. 3 Prospect Dazzles in Double-A Return originally appeared on Athlon Sports. St. Louis Cardinals No. 3 prospect Tink Hence made his first start with Double-A Springfield on Friday night after being activated from the 60-day injured list earlier in the week. Advertisement The 22-year-old held the Houston Astros' Double-A affiliated Corpus Christi Hooks hitless, allowing just one baserunner on a walk while striking out eight batters in 4 1/3 innings of work. Hence was limited to just 66 pitches in his first start since being activated, but he was efficient on the mound. Notably, the once-flame thrower's velocity was rather slow compared to what he was hitting on the radar gun last season. He only reached 96 miles per hour twice with his four-seamer sitting in the low 90's for the majority of the start - a large contrast from last year when he was consistently pitching in the high 90's while occasionally touching 100-plus. St. Louis Cardinals No. 3 prospect Tink Storry-Imagn Images The drop in pitch speed could potentially be due to a new mechanical approach that Hence is taking on the bump. Advertisement "I was kind of getting a little stiff on the mound (before the injury), so (I've) just been working on getting more athletic again," Hence told reporters on Thursday. The work seems to have blossomed into a new stance - and possibly a higher arm slot - on the mound, one in which the righty is more upright and less bent over while throwing pitches. "It was a really good reset for me to really learn (about) myself as a pitcher," Hence said of the lengthy IL stint. "I think it's paying off." The belief around the Springfield organization is that Hence will make just a few more "prove it" starts before being promoted back to Triple-A Memphis, where he was slated to start the year prior to his injury. Cardinals No. 3 Prospect Tink Hence to Begin Rehab Assignment

After nearly two months on the shelf, one of the St. Louis Cardinals top pitching prospects will be returning to action. Right-hander Tink Hence, the organizations No. 3 Prospect, will begin a rehab assignment with the Single-A Palm Beach Cardinals the club announced Wednesday. Hence, who was optioned to Triple-A Memphis to begin his 2025 campaign, was quickly placed on the 60-day injured list on March 28 after sustaining a right rib strain. Advertisement The 63rd overall pick by the Cardinals in the 2020 MLB Draft, Hence was impressive last season for Double-A Springfield. In 20 starts, he went 4-3 with a 2.71 ERA and 1.07 WHIP. He also recorded 109 strikeouts to go with 26 walks in 79 and two-thirds innings. Despite last year's numbers, however, the Arkansas native has faced durability questions, causing him to fall out of Top 100 Prospect rankings. St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Tink Hence in a spring relief appearance on February 25, 2025. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images "Hence really needed a healthy 2025. He still hasn't thrown more than 96 innings in a season since the Cardinals took him 63rd overall in 2020, and lat/chest/shoulder issues held him to 79 2/3 frames in '24." MLB Pipeline's Sam Dykstra wrote in the most recent rankings update on May 11. Advertisement "As good as the stuff has looked, he needs to show he can stick to the mound to regain more solid Top 100 consideration." Dykstra concluded. The news of Hence's rehab assignment Tuesday comes on the heels of another Cardinals pitching prospect trying to come back from injury. Quinn Mathews, the clubs No. 2 Prospect, threw two scoreless innings in a rehab start for the FCL-Cardinals on Monday. Hence will take the hill tonight when Palm Beach faces the Daytona Tortugas - Cincinnati Reds affiliate - at Roger Dean Chevrolet Stadium. First pitch is set for 6:30 p.m. ET. Cardinals' Heralded Prospect Drops Off Top 100 List Amid Absence

After starting the season on the 60-day IL, St. Louis Cardinals former top-100 prospect Tink Hence has fallen out of Top 100 Prospect List. Sam Dykstra covered the updated list, mentioning Hence as one of three prospects dropping out of the top 100. Advertisement "Hence really needed a healthy 2025," Dykstra wrote. He highlighted that Hence has yet to throw more than 96 innings in a full season due to his yearly struggle with injuries since joining the Cardinals' organization, writing, "As good as the stuff has looked, he needs to show he can stick to the mound to regain more solid Top 100 consideration." St. Louis Cardinals pitching prospect Tink Hence in a spring relief appearance on February 25, 2025. Sam Navarro-Imagn Images Coming into the season, Hence was sitting at No. 76 on the Top 100 List, but according to Dykstra, the news of the righty sustaining a right rib cage strain during spring training was enough to take him out of consideration for the list. The 22-year-old only totaled 20 starts for Double-A Springfield in 2024, but carried a 2.71 ERA with 109 strikeouts through 79 2/3 innings of work. Advertisement If Hence could work past the injuries, he could be something special, but it may be a while before Cardinals' fans see the flame-thrower in an MLB uniform until then. Other Cardinals in the Top 100 Cardinals top prospect JJ Wetherholt jumped from No. 23 to No. 20 on the list after starting the year with a .290 average in his first 22 games for the Double-A Cardinals. The 22-year-old shortstop has scored 12 times, walked 11 times, knocked in 10 runs, and picked up four doubles and a home run in just 78 at-bats so far this year. Although the team's No. 2 prospect Quinn Mathews hasn't seen action with Triple-A Memphis since April 11, the southpaw moved from No. 45 to No. 40 on the list. The 24-year-old pitched to a 6.10 ERA in three April starts, allowing seven runs on 11 hits and 15 in 10 1/3 innings before hitting the 7-day IL on April 13.
