USMNT Star's Reaction To Seeing President Trump Goes Viral
USMNT Star's Reaction To Seeing President Trump Goes Viral originally appeared on The Spun. The Juventus F.C. soccer club were at the White House on Wednesday ahead of their FIFA Club World Cup match that night and it was an awkward experience for the USMNT star who was part of the trip. Advertisement Juventus and USMNT winger Tim Weah spoke to the media today and had a mixed reaction to the visit to see President Donald Trump. He said that he was given no choice but to go and felt that the whole thing was "a bit weird." Weah said that while it was "a cool experience" to go to the White House, President Trump made it uncomfortable by talking about politics while he was there. "It was all a surprise to me, honestly — they told us that we have to go and I had no choice but to go so I showed up," Weah said. "I guess it was a cool experience being in the White House for the first time. It's always wonderful but I'm not one for politics so it wasn't that exciting. "I was caught by surprise, honestly. It was a bit weird. When he started talking about the politics with Iran and everything, it's kind of like, I just want to play football, man." It certainly appeared to be awkward for most, if not all, of the players there beside Weah at the White House. Everyone simply stood awkwardly behind President Trump in the Oval Office as the President fielded questions and spoke about everything from ongoing armed conflicts to his political enemies. How could anyone think this is good for the team and the name of Juventus to get caught in politics," one user remarked on X. "How the (expletive) is this happening lol? Juventus, from Italy, in the background answering these questions lol." "You know how random it is to answer military stance questions with an Italian football team just standing behind lmao why are they there???" It was weird for everyone, not just Weah and not just the players. Well, maybe not for President Trump. Prior to the Italian club's match against Al Ain, several players and coaches took a trip to the White House to meet with President Trump. Although it wasn't necessary, Trump asked Juventus players for their view on transgender athletes. He kicked off the conversation by saying, "Could a woman make your team, fellas?" Juventus general manager Damien Comolli replied, "We have a very good women's team." That led to another interesting comment from Trump. "You do, but they should be playing with women," Trump said. "He's being very diplomatic." Athlete Sounds Off on ‘Weird' Moment With Trump at the White House
A member of the U.S. Men's National Soccer Team said he was 'caught by surprise' by the 'weird' press conference President Donald Trump held for him and his Juventus teammates in the Oval Office. The storied Italian soccer club was in Washington, D.C., for the FIFA Club World Cup and made a 15-minute appearance at the White House Wednesday afternoon. The president introduced the two Juventus players who also play for the national U.S. men's team—Tim Weah and Weston McKennie—and told journalists gathered in the Oval Office there would be a game that night. He then invited the reporters to ask questions about FIFA. But the political journalists in the room were more interested in asking about Iran and other political topics, forcing the players to stand by awkwardly while Trump discussed missile strikes, travel bans, and women playing men's sports. Speaking to reporters after the Juventus game, Weah said the White House visit was a surprise. 'They told us that we have to go and I had no choice but to go,' the 25-year-old said, according to The Athletic. 'I was caught by surprise, honestly. It was a bit weird. When he started talking about the politics with Iran and everything, it's kind of like, I just want to play football man.' Officials didn't give an explanation for who organized the visit or why, but sources told The Athletic that the White House extended the invitation. FIFA President Gianni Infantino and Exor chief John Elkann were also there and presented Trump with jerseys. Exor, which is a holding company controlled by the Elkann-Agnelli family, owns a majority stake in the club. Elkann has met with Trump repeatedly in Washington as the chair of Stellantis—the automaker conglomerate that owns the Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Fiat, Jeep, and Maserati brands, among others—and traveled to Saudi Arabia with him in May, the Italian news agency Ansa reported. During Wednesday's press conference, Trump took a press pool question about former President Joe Biden's administration and used it as an opportunity to grill the Juventus players on gender politics. After claiming the 'autopen' was running the Biden White House, Trump said, 'He wasn't making a decision… He was never for open borders and he was never for transgender for everybody, or men playing in women's sports.' The president then turned to the Juventus players and asked, 'Could a woman make your team, fellas? Tell me, what do you think?' A couple of players seemed to shrug and say yes, prompting Trump to say, 'You're being nice,' and then direct the question to the team's general manager, Damien Comolli. Comolli tried to deflect, saying, 'We have a very good women's team.' 'But they should be playing with women,' Trump said. When nobody answered, he turned to the press pool and said, 'See, they're very diplomatic.' The players then shuffled their feet and crossed their arms while the president answered questions about Iran and went on a tangent about the futility of war, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the American Civil War. 'You look right up there. I see the Declaration of Independence and I say, 'I wonder if the Civil War—it always seemed to me that could have been solved without losing 600,000-plus people.'' The Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 during the American Revolutionary War, not the Civil War, though Trump was basically right that an estimated 620,000 to 750,000 people died during the Civil War. After the Juventus game, Weah told reporters it was his first time visiting the White House. 'I guess it was a cool experience being in the White House,' he said. 'But I'm not one for the politics, so it wasn't that exciting.' His fellow U.S. Men's National Team player McKennie also shook Trump's hand during the visit. During Trump's first term, McKennie had told a German media outlet that he didn't support the president.

How Juventus Started FIFA Club World Cup With 5-0 Win Over Al Ain

More FC/Juventus FC via Getty Images) Having waited until Wednesday evening for their first appearance in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup, Juventus made up for lost time as they notched a huge 5-0 win over Al Ain in Washington DC. The 2024 AFC Champions League winners were completely overwhelmed by the Bianconeri, who had an eventful day in the build up to this Group G encounter at Audi Field. Indeed, prior to facing Al Ain, Juve players, staff and club officials had visited the White House as guests of President Trump, an experience US international Tim Weah later described as 'a bit weird.' After that it was on to business, Juve boss Igor Tudor – who last week signed a contract extension – naming a strong starting XI as he looked to start the competition with a victory. Yet it would be their opponents who carved out the first scoring opportunity, Al Ain's early pressing leading to a 9th-minute chance for Facundo Zabala that was saved by Michele Di Gregorio. Just two minutes later, full-back Alberto Costa delivered a pin point cross at the other end, Randal Kolo Muani heading home to give Juve the lead. The Bianconeri dominated the game from that point on, going two goals ahead after some neat skill and a fine finish from Francisco Conceicao. Another well-taken goal soon followed as Kenan Yildiz controlled a ball from Khephren Thuram before firing beyond the helpless Rui Patricio with a superbly struck effort, Kolo Muani adding a fourth just before half time. The break seemed to fire some life into Al-Ain, Ramy Rabia seeing a goal disallowed before Di Gregorio sprung to life with a wonderful save to deny Kodjo Fo-Doh Laba from close range. Juve quickly reestablished their dominance despite a flurry of substitutions that broke the flow of the game, Conceicao bagging his second to push the scoreline out to 5-0. Kolo Muani almost secured a hat trick before former Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz saw a good effort rebound off the post. Speaking after the game, the Juve boss was happy with what he had seen, but admitted that he will be demanding much more from his squad as they progress in this expanded version of the Club World Cup. 'Al-Ain pushed at the beginning, but we responded in the right way,' Tudor told reporters. 'It's a good result and a good start that gives us confidence. We were good at managing the tempo of the game, also because it was hot. 'We want to go as far as possible in the competition, we are happy with this start.' 'We can still improve significantly in terms of defensive positioning; we need to concede less on counterattacks, but I liked the courage we showed to go forward and score,' he continued. 'We're heading in the right direction; there's always room to improve, but we're on the right path. There's a desire to grow, and over time, the pieces come together.' Juventus will look to do just that before their next outing, with a few days to prepare for Sunday's encounter with Moroccan side Wydad AC at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia.
