Pixar Gives First Look at ‘Toy Story 5,' Teases New Original ‘Gatto' at Annecy
Pixar Animation Studios offered an exclusive first look at its hottest upcoming features — including Hoppers and Toy Story 5 — and announced a brand-new original production, Gatto, during a studio presentation on Friday at the Annecy international animation film festival as part of a broader showcase that also included extensive footage from Pixar's 2025 release Elio. Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter took the stage to present behind-the-scenes material from Toy Story 5, revealing early footage and confirming the return of franchise veterans Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cussack. Directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris and produced by Jessica Choi, the fifth installment in Pixar's flagship franchise is scheduled for release on June 19, 2026. More from The Hollywood Reporter Corporate-TV Branding Has Gotten Out of Control Natalie Portman-Produced French Animated Film 'Arco' Wins Annecy Chinese Auteur Bi Gan Breaks Down 'Resurrection,' His Mesmerizing Ode to Cinema's Enigmas Docter shared that the new film will explore the challenges faced by the toys in a digital-first world. 'It's Toy meets Tech,' he said, outlining the film's plot, which will see the original movies' team of toys facing up to the challenge presented by the new favorite plaything of their 8-year-old owner Bonnie Anderson: A tech tablet called Lillypad. Woody, Buzz and the rest of the gang will confront a new generation of children more enamored with screens than playthings. Docter screened the world premiere of the film's opening scene, in which a container full of Buzz Lightyears awakens on an isolated desert island and struggles to reconnect with 'star command.' Toy Story 5 will also feature Ernie Hudson voicing Combat Carl, taking over the role originally voiced by the late Carl Weathers. In honor of the franchise's 30th anniversary, the Annecy audience was also treated to archival footage from the making of the original 1995 Toy Story, Pixar's first full-length feature. Docter also announced a brand-new animated feature, the original Gatto. The feature, to be directed by Luca filmmaker Enrico Casarosa, follows Nero, a water-hating black cat living in the picturesque city of Venice, Italy, who befriends Maya, a lonely street musician. Docter gave a sneak peek at the first animated tests and character drawings for the movie, which will have a much more painterly design than is typical of Pixar. Gatto is set to premiere in the summer of 2027. The studio also debuted a first-look clip from Hoppers, an original Pixar comedy about Mabel (Piper Curda), a nature-loving young woman trying to stop the local Mayor Jerry (Jon Hamm), from building a highway that will destroy her local woodlands. Thanks to a secret brain-swapping experiment, Mabel is able to transfer her mind into a robot beaver and heads to a pond, where refugees from the encroaching industrialization have landed. There, she tries to convince the animals, led by the regal beaver King George (Bobby Moynihan) to join her and stop the highway. The Annecy session also included a preview of Elio, directed by Madeline Sharafian and Domee Shi, and produced by Mary Alice Drumm. The science fiction adventure, which premieres in theaters on June 20, follows 11-year-old Elio Solis (voiced by Yonas Kibreab), who is mistakenly identified as Earth's ambassador after being abducted by aliens. The voice cast includes Zoe Saldaña, Remy Edgerly, Brad Garrett, Jameela Jamil and Shirley Henderson. Elio premiered earlier this week in Los Angeles. The Annecy crowd was treated to a full 25 minutes of footage. In Pixar's Toy Story 5, the Big New Villain Is a Tablet
Pixar is giving its old-school toys a decidedly modern antagonist in its fifth installment of the beloved Toy Story movies: a tablet. During the studio's Friday showcase at Annecy's International Animation Film Festival in France, chief creative officer Pete Docter revealed that Toy Story 5's villain is Lily Pad, a "sneaky" and "prickly" tablet that convinces 8-year-old Bonnie Anderson that friends and games on a device beat dusty ol' toys in the closet. The first concept art shows the frog-faced tablet looming over Buzz, Jessie and Bullseye like a touchscreen tyrant of the toy box. As you can probably foresee, this is a battle between analog toys and always-on tech. (You can stream Toy Story movies one through four on Disney Plus.) The Lily Pad reveal topped a jam-packed Walt Disney Animation and Pixar showcase, where the company rolled out updated release dates, never-before-seen footage and a couple of all-new original films. Toy Story 5: tech is the enemy The premise of Toy Story 5 is that Anderson gets a Lily Pad for school chat and online games. But the tablet decides that Anderson's toys, including Woody, Buzz and Jessie, are holding her back. Tom Hanks, Tim Allen and Joan Cusack are all returning, while Ernie Hudson steps in as Combat Carl, honoring the late Carl Weathers. Docter shared the opening scene of Toy Story 5, which shows a crate full of stranded Buzz Lightyears trying to escape a desert island. Toy Story 5 is set for release on June 19, 2026, more than 30 years after the first movie came out. It's set a couple of years after the events of Toy Story 4, but no word yet on how Woody, who departed with Bo Peep at the end of that movie, will return to Bonnie's house -- or whether Bo Peep will be in the fifth movie. Toy Story 5 starts off with Buzz Lightyear action figures, stuck in toy mode, searching for Star Command (shown here in concept art). Pixar Pixar's two new original films: Hoppers and Gatto Daniel Chong's Hoppers, scheduled for March 6, 2026, turns an eco-heist into a critter-powered caper: 14-year-old Mabel uploads her mind into a robotic beaver to save her local pond from a highway project. Gatto, slated for summer 2027, centers on Nero, a black cat in Venice who's burned through most of his nine lives doing jobs for a feline mob boss. Now, questioning whether he's wasted those lives, Nero stumbles into an unexpected friendship that could finally give him purpose. The film will be shot in a "living storybook" style, which is new to Pixar. New footage from Zootopia 2 and Elio Jared Bush, Walt Disney Animation Studios' chief creative officer and director-writer of Zootopia 2, showed some new footage and images from the anticipated sequel, which should come out in November. The audience also got to watch a 27-minute sizzle reel from Elio, the cosmic coming-of-age adventure, which opens June 20.

Is ‘The Santa Clauses' returning for season 3? Everything we know so far
By Aman Shukla Published on June 17, 2025, 20:00 IST Last updated June 17, 2025, 16:45 IST Disney+'s The Santa Clauses has brought holiday cheer to families for two seasons, continuing the beloved story of Scott Calvin (Tim Allen) from the original Santa Clause movie trilogy. As fans eagerly await news about a potential third season, here's a rundown of everything we know so far about the future of this festive series. Will There Be The Santa Clauses Season 3? As of now, Disney+ has not officially confirmed or cancelled The Santa Clauses for a third season. The show's second season wrapped up in December 2023, and while fans hoped for a quick renewal like the one that followed Season 1, no official announcement has been made yet. However, there's reason to stay hopeful! Executive producer Jason Winer has shared optimism about the show's future, saying, 'The show is a giant hit for Disney+, and Season 3 feels… while it's never a certainty, it feels like we got a good shot.' This suggests that discussions are ongoing, and the series' strong fanbase could pave the way for more episodes. When Could The Santa Clauses Season 3 Premiere? If Disney renews The Santa Clauses soon, a release in late 2025 (November or December) is plausible, given the quick turnaround between Seasons 1 and 2. Season 2 was announced in December 2022 and premiered in November 2023, so a similar timeline could apply. However, if delays persist or Tim Allen's other projects take priority, fans might have to wait until 2026 for new episodes. What Might the Story Be About? The first two seasons of The Santa Clauses followed Scott Calvin as he searched for a successor to take over his Santa duties, while also exploring the magical growth of his children, Cal and Sandra. Season 2 ended with Scott defeating Magnus Antas, the Mad Santa (Eric Stonestreet), and focusing on training Cal to potentially become the next Santa. If Season 3 is greenlit, the story could dive deeper into Cal and Sandra's magical abilities. Tim Allen has teased a possible sci-fi twist, suggesting that Sandra's powers, which go beyond those of typical witches, could open up 'a whole other world.' This could bring a fresh, exciting angle to the series while keeping its family-friendly charm. Additionally, the show might introduce new holiday-themed characters, like trolls (hinted at in Season 2), or bring back familiar faces like Jack Frost (Martin Short) as a friendlier ally. Fans on Reddit have also expressed hopes for the return of characters like Mother Nature, Cupid, or Sandman from the original films. Pixar Drops First Look At ‘Toy Story 5' And Original Animated Cat-Led Feature ‘Gatto'
As Andy's toys gear up for another return to infinity and beyond, Disney has shared a sneak peek of Toy Story 5 to tide fans over the wait. The sequel was spotlighted at the company's showcase during the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, alongside two of its upcoming major features: Hoppers and a brand-new pic titled Gatto. Pixar chief creative officer Pete Docter took to the stage to showcase early footage of the tentpole release, outlining a story premise involving the challenges faced by the toys in a digital era. 'It's Toy meets Tech,' he described, revealing a new foe in the form of a tablet called Lillypad. The opening scene was also shown at the event, featuring the many Buzz Lightyears who wind up on an isolated island and are unable to connect with 'star command' (via The Hollywood Reporter). To commemorate the franchise's 30th anniversary, the fresh reveal was accompanied by archival footage from the making of the original 1995 animated classic. Toy Story 5, directed by Andrew Stanton and McKenna Harris, will mark the reunion of veterans Tom Hanks and Tim Allen as Buzz and Woody, respectively, with a heavier focus on Jessie the Cowgirl when it bows on 19 June 2026. Hoppers, an original comedy, got an exclusive first look as well. Helmed by BAFTA Children's Awards winner Daniel Chong of We Bare Bears fame, it follows the story of Mabel (voiced by Piper Curda), who uses a secret brain-swapping technology to transfer her mind into a robot beaver and convince the animals to stop a highway construction project from destroying her local woodlands. Rounding out the upcoming announcement slate is Gatto, a brand-new animated adventure to be directed by Luca's Enrico Casarosa. Following in the footsteps of the award-winning Latvian film Flow, it's set to blend a Pixar-first-hand-painted animation style with the usual CG fare, carrying an official logline that reads: 'After years of manoeuvring the canal-ridden, superstitious city, a black cat named Nero begins to question whether he's lived the right lives. Indebted to a local feline mob boss, Nero finds himself in a quandary and is forced to forge a truly unexpected friendship that may finally lead him to his purpose…. unless Venice gets the better of him first.' Gatto premieres sometime in Summer 2027.
