Cop probe after 2 strays die in Kasba

Kolkata: Two street dogs were found dead under suspicious circumstances in Tiljala, prompting a cop probe into possible poisoning. According to locals, a third dog has also fallen ill in what appears to be a series of targeted attacks on local strays. The incidents occurred between June 9 and 15 on Tiljala Masjid Bari Lane. Local resident and animal lover Meera Sarkar, who regularly feeds and cares for neighbourhood strays, reported the deaths to Tiljala PS after noticing the unusual symptoms. "The dogs were perfectly healthy before their sudden deaths. This appears to be deliberate cruelty against innocent animals," Sarkar said. Cops registered a case under Section 11(1) of Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act and Section 325 of BNS Act. The maximum punishment can extend to five years' imprisonment. Officers sent both carcasses for postmortem to determine the cause of death. They are also reviewing CCTV footage to identify any suspicious activity or individuals who may have fed the dogs prior to their deaths. "We are taking this seriously and examining all evidence," an officer said. "Locals said the dogs were fed regularly by several people. But they were not sure who could kill them. We suspect burglars may have killed the dogs to ensure they didn't raise an alarm," he added. Animal welfare organisations have expressed concern over the incidents and urged authorities to take swift action. Some residents have a counter-argument, saying the strays have multiplied and also dirty the area. "But we also want the perpetrators of such acts behind bars," said a local.

Fake HC lawyer dupes woman of 3 lakh

Kolkata: A complaint was filed at Tiljala PS against an individual who allegedly impersonated a high court lawyer and defrauded a Picnic Garden resident of Rs 3 lakh. The accused allegedly forged official court orders, notices, and even judges' signatures, and set up mock virtual court sessions and falsely used the HC registrar's name to convince the victim of his legitimacy as a legal representative at the Calcutta HC. "He systematically deceived me into transferring over Rs 3 lakh," the woman said. When she turned suspicious, the accused became unreachable. "We collected technical evidence and started a probe," said an officer.
