Florian Wirtz arrives in England for Liverpool medical ahead of £116m move

Liverpool came to a verbal agreement with Bayer Levekusen on Wednesday evening after seeing three bids turned down, with a fourth and final offer worth an initial £100m plus add-ons being accepted. He landed at Manchester Airport this afternoon, from where he will travel to Merseyside to finalise a deal, with a medical penned in for Friday. Wirtz also attracted attention from Bayern Munich but told the German champions he wanted to go to Liverpool and agreed personal terms with the club two weeks ago. The new English champions are believed to have impressed him with their plan while Manchester City, who also showed an interest, switched their focus to Tijjani Reijnders of AC Milan and Lyon's Rayan Cherki. Wirtz smashes Liverpool's transfer record as well as edging the wider British record, which is currently held by Moises Caicedo's £115m switch to Chelsea. The Reds have previously paid £75m for Virgil van Dijk and £64m, rising to £85m, for Darwin Nunez. Wirtz, who found the net for Germany against Portugal in the Nations League last week, has scored 34 goals in the last two seasons for Leverkusen, helping them win a first league title in 2023/24 across an unbeaten domestic season, when he was named the Bundesliga Player of the Year. Having always been touted as one of Germany's next big things, his supersonic rise to prominence over the past couple seasons comes after a suffering a detrimental ACL injury in 2022, which saw him out of action for 266 days. Liverpool have already signed his Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong for £29m as they begin life after Trent Alexander-Arnold. They are also in talks with Bournemouth, who want £45m for left-back Milos Kerkez, and could commit almost £200m to new signings within a few weeks.

Matchday Live guests excited by Reijnders and Rodri

Former City striker Shaun Goater is excited by the promise that new signing Tijjani Reijnders showed on his debut in the victory over Wydad AC. The Dutch international made his first appearance since his move from Milan as we kicked off the FIFA Club World Cup with a 2-0 win in Philadelphia. Advertisement Reijnders was named Serie A's Best Midfielder for the 2024/25 and Goater believes he showed some of the reasons why on his first outing. Speaking as a guest on Matchday Live, he said that the 26-year-old showed plenty of facets to show he could excel in the role. 'I liked what I was seeing with him, in the first half in particular,' Goater told presenter Natalie Pike after the full-time whistle. 'He was deep, receiving balls from the centre-halves, and he passed two or three balls that broke lines, not only in the first phase but in the second. 'He was breaking two lines and I thought: 'Okay, this is something to look forward to seeing him do'. Advertisement 'Someone that can come a little bit deeper but he has that ability to go forward and get more involved further up the field as well.' WATCH THE FIFA CLUB WORLD CUP 2025 ON DAZN Fellow guest Steph Houghton was also impressed by the first appearance from Reijnders and is looking forward to a potential midfield axis alongside Rodri. The current Ballon d'Or holder was a second half substitute as he continues his comeback from the knee injury that ruled him out for the majority of the 2024/25 season. Houghton said it will take a little time for Rodri to get back to his absolute best, but is thrilled to see the brilliant midfielder back on the pitch. 'Reijnders got pushed a little further forward [when Rodri came on] making those runs into the box,' the former City Women's captain said. Advertisement 'I think as City fans we want him to hit the heights of what he's done over the last couple of years. 'But he's been out for eight or nine months so it's going to take him time to get back to that level and that's why these games are important. 'Those last 30 minutes, there were probably a few wayward passes, but ultimately that's just him finding his position again. 'Reijnders I was really impressed with. He showed a lot of good qualities that we might need over the season in terms of retention of the ball and forward runs, especially in the second half.' Matchday Live will be back in the early hours of Monday for our next Group G game with Al Ain which kicks off at 02:00 (UK) on Monday 23 June. Nedum Onuoha and Paul Dickov will join Natalie in the studio for the show which starts at around 01:00 (UK), before Alistair Mann and Andy Morrison provide radio commentary (for those with an active CITY+ subscription) during the action.

Tijjani Reijnders ‘can be very important' for Man City

Nathan Ake expects fellow Dutchman and new Manchester City team-mate Tijjani Reijnders to have a big impact at the club. 'I think from the first week in training, you could see that he fits in really well and you can see the quality he has. 'He can play in different positions, he can get into the box, he can keep the ball going and moving forward. He has great quality and there's so much more to come. Advertisement 'He did really well. It was tough circumstances but he kept the ball really well, kept us moving and offensively he was very good.' Ake played 90 minutes himself for the first time since January as City saw off their Moroccan opponents in their Group G opener with first-half goals from Phil Foden and Jeremy Doku. His past season was a frustrating one as he made just 18 appearances in all competitions due to fitness problems. The 30-year-old said: 'It was very tough. I basically always tried to push, tried to come back as quick as possible but then I got injured again and mentally it can be tough. Advertisement 'It's never easy but luckily that's done now and hopefully now I can stay fit and keep performing. 'I feel good. I had my first 60 (minutes) with the national team and this was my first 90 in a little while. 'Obviously (I hope there is) more to come but this game was important in the group and it's a good start for me.'
