NFC East rookie first rounders all post danger to Cowboys but one stands out most The Washington Commanders, New York Giants and Philadelphia Eagles are all proficient drafting teams. Their ability to add impactful rookies is one of the reasons the Dallas Cowboys have fallen to No. 3 in the NFC East and a major factor why many analysts have the Cowboys outside the playoff picture in 2025. The Cowboys made a safe, albeit unspectacular, pick when they drafted Tyler Booker with the No. 12 pick. It's an abnormally high place to select an interior offensive lineman and a selection the rest of the division probably isn't losing sleep over. While Dallas went safe in the first round, their division rivals went aggressive. New York drafted two players in the first round, selecting Abdul Carter from Penn State with the third overall pick and then adding Jaxson Dart with the 25th pick later in the round. The Commanders followed the Cowboys' lead and went offensive line with tackle Josh Conerly from Oregon. They understand protecting their best weapon, QB Jayden Daniels, is their best chance at continued success and drafted accordingly. Meanwhile the Eagles added to their already stacked defense by picking up Jihaad Campbell with the 31st pick. Campbell is a great prospect with decent value late in the draft and figures into the starting rotation on Day 1. All of the players selected in the first-round project are cornerstone pieces who are likely to haunt the Cowboys for years to come but one player stands out far above the others as both an elite prospect and a 'sure thing.' That's the Giant's Carter. Carter looks like the second coming of Micah Parsons. He's an unblockable pass rusher who can attack from multiple places in a variety of ways. He's a player who will be a thorn in the side of Dallas for years to come and someone who makes Tyler Guyton's development imperative. The Cowboys put all their eggs in Guyton's basket this year. The 2024 first rounder out of Oklahoma has a tremendous skill set but is coming off a terrible rookie season. If he can't make tremendous growth in 2025 the Cowboys will have their work cut out for the foreseeable future. There's no telling how any of these players will work out for their respective teams once the dust settles but one thing is for certain: Carter is the real deal and top name on the NFC East draft class in 2025. 2025 NFL schedule: Commanders set for 8 standalone games
May 15 - Some oddities, notable facts and trends from the NFL's schedule release on Wednesday: Prepare for the Jayden Daniels show The Washington Commanders are must-see TV these days with NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year quarterback Jayden Daniels at the helm, one year after they finished 12-5 and made it an unlikely march to the NFC Championship Game. After years of few spotlight games nationally, the Commanders are slated for eight standalone games in 2025, tying the Kansas City Chiefs for the most. Five of those games are in primetime. This included a Christmas Day matchup vs. the NFC East-rival Cowboys on Netflix. They also play their first international since 2016, facing the Dolphins in Madrid, Spain, in Nov. 16. Browns open vs. Bengals, no primetime games It has been a hard -- and much talked-about -- fall for the Cleveland Browns, who begin the season at home against the in-state rival Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7. The Browns will play all of their games this year in the daytime. Vikings' J.J. McCarthy to make first start vs. Bears Second-year QB J.J. McCarthy, who is expected to return from a meniscus tear to start for the Minnesota Vikings this season, will open the regular season with a Monday night road matchup against the NFC Central-rival Chicago Bears. McCarthy was taken by the Vikings out of Michigan with the 10th pick of the 2024 draft. He sustained a right knee injury last August and missed the entire season. Cowboys full of Thursday games The Dallas Cowboys will play an NFL-high four games on Thursday night this season, including three of them over a five-week stretch. And the opponents for those games are no slouches: Week 13 -- Kansas City Chiefs; Week 14 -- Detroit Lions; Week 17 -- Washington Commanders. The Cowboys are coming off a season in which they went a disappointing 7-10. Jets no longer primetime-worthy Following a disappointing 5-12 season in 2024 and the departures of quarterback Aaron Rodgers and wide receiver Davante Adams, among others, the New York Jets are headed toward relative anonymity once again. With Rodgers at the helm, they were among the leaders in primetime or standalone games, but in 2025, they are scheduled for just two of them. Thirteen of their games are slated to be in the early (1 p.m. ET) Sunday slot. That should allow the team to "move in silence," which has been new head coach Aaron Glenn's stated goal. Eagles, Cowboys square off on TNF in Week 1 The reigning Super Bowl champs, the Philadelphia Eagles, will open the season on Thursday, Sept. 4, at home vs. the Cowboys, their bitter NFC East rivals. Chargers, Chiefs play in Sao Paulo in Week 1 The Chargers will head to Brazil to play the Chiefs for a Friday night game on Sept. 5. That kicks off a international schedule that includes seven regular-season games. After the Brazil matchup, these are the international games: Sunday, Sept. 28: Vikings-Steelers in Dublin Sunday, Oct. 5: Vikings-Browns in London Sunday, Oct. 12: Broncos-Jets in London Sunday, Oct. 19: Rams-Jaguars in London Sunday, Nov. 9: Falcons-Colts in Berlin Sunday, Nov. 16: Commanders-Dolphins in Madrid --Field Level Media

Commanders add two high-upside defenders in the latest Mel Kiper mock draft The Washington Commanders only have a handful of picks in the 2025 NFL draft. This is because general manager Adam Peters made multiple high-profile trades at essential positions, acquiring cornerback Marshon Lattimore, left tackle Laremy Tunsil, and wide receiver Deebo Samuel. Almost every move Peters made last offseason worked. For the Commanders to have another playoff season, he'll need to be as successful this offseason. Peters was correct in how he handled the 2024 offseason because the Commanders went all the way to the NFC Championship just one year after winning four games in an entire season. Still, Washington must add more pieces to get to the next level. They've made improvements through trades and free agency signings, and in a couple of weeks, the Commanders will add five additional players in the 2025 NFL draft. Who will they add? ESPN's Mel Kiper recently released a two-round mock draft that suggests the Commanders add depth to their defense. 29. Shemar Stewart, DE, Texas A&M Stewart's draft stock is hard to predict. As I mentioned earlier, I considered him for Cincinnati at No. 17. He comes off the board here, 12 spots later. It's the same dilemma that GMs will be struggling with on draft night. Stewart has all the talent in the world -- speed, explosiveness and power. But he also had 4.5 sacks over three seasons. If an NFL coaching staff can help him put it all together, the upside is immense. I'm betting on Commanders coach Dan Quinn unlocking that potential. Dante Fowler Jr.'s departure in free agency means there's a hole opposite Dorance Armstrong on the D-line. Dan Quinn has the ability to bring out the best in his players, especially on the defensive side of the ball where he's most comfortable. 61. Darien Porter, CB, Iowa State I'm intrigued by Porter as a Day 2 pick because there's a lot of untapped potential. He's a former receiver who is still learning the nuances of the cornerback position. He has 4.3 40 speed, plenty of length and the ball skills to create takeaways. Porter picked off three passes last season. The Commanders added Jonathan Jones and Noah Igbinoghene to replace Benjamin St-Juste and Emmanuel Forbes Jr. (who was cut last season), but Porter could develop into a starter. One other consideration: Oklahoma State's Nick Martin would be an interesting addition to the linebacker corps. He is a fast riser late in the process. Similar to Stewart, Kiper says that Darien Porter has loads of untapped potential. Quinn is just the guy to push these players to reach their potential. Improving the defense is a top priority this offseason, and they haven't done a lot of adjusting defensively so far. The players may be different, but Kiper is right about one thing: The Commanders will look to bolster their defense in this draft.

Commanders sign former rugby player T.J. Maguranyanga
The Washington Commanders on Thursday signed T.J. Maguranyanga, a former rugby player who is part of the NFL's International Player Pathway program. Maguranyanga, 22, is listed as a defensive end. The Zimbabwe native played in the French Top 14 rugby league before heading to the football development camps at the IMG Academy in Florida in December. He will not count against the Commanders' 90-man offseason roster. Texans trade 5-time Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil to Commanders: reports
The Washington Commanders have made a blockbuster trade with the Houston Texans to land five-time Pro Bowl left tackle Laremy Tunsil, according to multiple reports. ESPN reports the Commanders are sending a 2025 third- and seventh-round NFL Draft pick as well as a 2026 second- and fourth-round pick. The Texans will be sending a 2025 fourth-round pick as well as Tunsil. With quarterback Jayden Daniels quickly proving he is a franchise quarterback in one of the best rookie campaigns of all time, the Commanders wasted no time getting him more protection on the offensive line with Tunsil. Washington has also traded for receiver Deebo Samuel with the San Francisco 49ers as well as New Orleans Saints cornerback Marshon Lattimore during the 2024 regular season, showing their commitment to improving the depth chart in different areas.
