A grand food fest celebrating Travancore cuisine at The Leela Kovalam
There are dinners one eats, and then there are evenings one feels — slow, lingering, and entrenched in memory. The 'Taste of Travancore' food festival at The Leela Kovalam is one such experience. Located on a hill by the Arabian Sea, The Terrace at The Leela appears to 'float' between the sky and ocean. It's not just about the food on your plate, but about the whole experience — food that feels like home, the grace of oil lamps flickering over brass urulis, classical music and percussion performances in the background, and the sea waves whispering ancient secrets. The festival, running from June 20 to 26, is a tribute to this land. The hotel's general manager, Ayyappan Nallaperumal, says, 'As our first major culinary celebration of the year, we wanted to keep it truly rooted in home, celebrating the flavours of Travancore, sourcing fresh produce from our garden, Aaramam, and honouring the traditions of this coastline that has inspired generations of cuisine. It is our way of giving back to the city, with a table set in its honour.' At one glance, it is a journey through the flavours of the historic Travancore kingdom, stretching from Kanyakumari to Alappuzha.

Our favourite British beer gardens ahead of 23C weather – from beachfront views to Cotswolds pubs
WITH the UK set to hit highs of 23C next year, Brits will be looking for a great place to pitch up with a pint. So The Sun has rounded up their top beer garden picks from beachfront pubs to quaint Cotswolds retreats. 16 The Terrace, Alexandra Palace, London I've yet to come across a pub with better views than The Terrace at Alexandra Palace. On a sunny day, hundreds of punters congregate on the benches outside the Phoenix Bar, where you can see as far as south London. On weekends, there are also plenty of food trucks to order from. - Head of Travel, Caroline McGuire 16 The Old Neptune, Whitstable There's not many pubs that can boast having a beer garden right on the beach. The Old Neptune in Whitstable is one of the few in the UK, and one of my favourites in summer when you are right on the shingle beach, looking out over the sea. - Deputy Travel Editor, Kara Godfrey Church House Inn, Devon Nestled in the village of Marldon, located between Paignton and Torquay, the Church House Inn features a long stretching garden next to Marldon Church. The Inn has a wide variety of beverages and also hosts regular events and themed nights. The village green is also located just across the road for a nice stroll. - Travel Reporter, Cyann Fielding 16 Carriages, Knaresborough Knaresborough is one of the prettiest towns in the UK so it makes sense that it always has one of the best pub gardens While Carriages is technically a wine bar, you can still grab a pint while overlooking the train line. - Deputy Travel Editor, Kara Godfrey The UK pub with the country's 'most beautiful beer garden' 16 Pear Tree Cafe, Battersea Park, London A popular spot among young professionals in London, Pear Tree Cafe is not explicitly a pub. Whilst a cafe in the day, in the late afternoons and evenings it turns into a vibrant venue on the edge of a pod in Battersea Park, with both and indoor and outdoor bar. The venue also boasts live music events. - Travel Reporter, Cyann Fielding 16 The Peat Spade Inn, Hampshire A stunning country pub, found in a tiny hamlet in Hampshire. This small but very cute pub garden has so many stunning plants that you feel like you're having a drink in someone's back garden. - Head of Travel, Caroline McGuire 16 The Fox at Willian, Letchworth The Fox is your classic country pub with an AA Rosette kitchen so getting a bite to eat alongside a drink is always a good idea - I'd personally recommend The Fox Platter which is essentially their own version of a charcuterie board. Out the front, the pub overlooks the village green and pond. But out the back is my favourite spot - it's been transformed into a Mediterranean style courtyard that in the right weather makes your surroundings feel less Hertfordshire and more like Italy. - Travel Reporter, Alice Penwill 16 Ye Olde Swan Inn, Radcot Ye Old Swan Inn isn't the easiest to get to, being in the middle of Radcot. But the drive is worth it, with quaint seating overlooking the river and Cotswolds stone bridge - and even a tiny campsite right next to it. - Deputy Travel Editor, Kara Godfrey 16 The Blacksmiths, Isle of Wight This 400-year-old pub has oodles of charm inside but the best bit is its pub garden with stunning panoramic views across miles of open countryside. There's also an outdoor children's play area and parents patio. - Head of Travel, Lisa Minot 16 Tap Room at The Old New Inn, Bourton-on-the-Water Located next to a model village with a convenient gateway straight from the attraction into the pub garden is the Tap Room at The Old New Inn in Bourton-on-the-Water. The pub offers a great variety of summer spritz', which can be enjoyed in their pristinely manicured dog-friendly garden. - Travel Reporter, Cyann Fielding 16 The White Horse, Hertfordshire The 18th century coaching inn is now a cosy gastro-pub with a new chef serving up delicious food with a Mediterranean bent. The pub's secluded garden gets plenty of sunshine year-round and has plenty of space for kids to run about. - Head of Travel, Lisa Minot 16 The Sword in Hand, Westmill I'm lucky enough to have this pub right on my doorstep and I tend to stop in for a refreshing drink after a very long dog walk around the rolling fields that surround the village of Westmill. The Sword in Hand has been a pub for over 200 years and was this year awarded the title of 'Best pub' in Hertfordshire by The Telegraph. Outside is a beautiful patio area with wisteria that blooms in late spring and a grape vine canopy, as well a grassy area with picnic tables that look over the neighbouring farm - where better to enjoy a glass rosé? - Travel Reporter, Alice Penwill 16 The Standard Inn, Portscatho, Cornwall The relatively new offering by the creators of the hugely popular Hidden Hut, the Standard Inn has excellent food. Think meat and veggie sharing feasts as well as frozen margaritas, in a huge, sunny back garden. - Head of Travel, Caroline McGuire White Horse, East Runton While it might not be the most beautiful or classic pub 'garden', the White Horse in East Runton has recently undergone a makeover and you can't fault the outdoor seating area adorned with sun umbrellas. It's the location that really does it, just a three minute walk away from East Runton Beach. I thought it was the perfect pit stop after a long trek on the sand, especially once I got an Aperol Spritz in my hand. - Travel Reporter, Alice Penwill 16 River Brew Co, Newcastle Its location means you get a great view of some of the city's most iconic sites - it's nestled under the Tyne Bridge, so you can see the Gateshead Millennium Bridge in the distance, and it's just a stone's throw away from the unusual looking Glasshouse building. There's a brewery, taproom, restaurant, and street view vendors. There really is no excuse to go anywhere else. 16
