The Stand Edinburgh comedy club celebrates 30th birthday
The Stand, based in Edinburgh, hosted its first regular club night in 1995, in the basement of a pub in the Grassmarket, before opening at a permanent venue on York Place in 1998. The club also has sites in Glasgow and Newcastle, as well as being one of the staple venues at the Edinburgh Fringe festival, and has launched the careers of many comedians in Scotland, including Frankie Boyle and Kevin Bridges. The milestone was celebrated at The Stand's Edinburgh venue on York Place last week, which The National was invited to attend. READ MORE: 'Joy, celebration and warmth' of Palestinian art to be showcased at Edinburgh Fringe Former SNP MP and The Stand co-founder Tommy Sheppard took to the stage, as well as a host of familiar faces on the comedy circuit - including Gareth Mutch, Vladimir McTavish, Robin Grainger and Liam Farrelly. Reflecting on The Stand's history, Sheppard told guests that the venue has had "such an important part of Scottish cultural life" in the last 30 years. He said: "We did it because we wanted a platform to be in the capital city of Scotland for people who wanted to perform stand-up comedy, because up to then the only way you could get in the business was to go to London." Sheppard added that The Stand has stuck to the principle that "stand up comedy is not just about making people laugh". "It's also about making people think, it's about saying the unsayable, about criticising the rich and powerful through the vehicle of humour," he continued. "By doing that we give a voice to the audience from this stage and we allow people to get through their lives and get through their world a little bit saner and a little bit happier than they might do otherwise." Sheppard also reflected on the "difficult" state of the sector, as he said: "This is what people in the business call a 'very challenging trading situation'. "It means that a lot of people who used to go out once a week, now go out once a month. They used to spend a tenner, and now they try to keep it to one drink if they come out." READ MORE: Edinburgh Fringe programme launches with 3350 shows across 265 venues He added that while The Stand's presence at the Fringe is "not as big" as it once was, the comedy club had "consolidated" its position this year with the four venues it had secured. This August, festival-goers can look forward to more than 60 different events across the capital – ranging from stand-up comedy to spoken word, to a series of "In Conversation" events with the likes of First Minister John Swinney, Glasgow University rector Dr Ghassan Abu-Sittah, independent MP and former Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn and filmmaker Paul Laverty. The National also told how several Palestinian comedians are set to make their Fringe debut at the Palestine Comedy Club, which will be held at The Stand on August 18, 19 and 20. Sheppard urged people to show their support for the club, not just "so that we are confident in building towards a successful Fringe, but also towards the next chapter in our history". He added: "We are not done yet, not by a long shot."

Palestinian comedians to make debuts at Edinburgh Festival Fringe
As part of The Stand's programme this year, The Palestine Comedy Club will be brought to the Fringe. PalCom is a Palestine-UK collective developing comedy unique to the Palestinian experience and organisers say it will act as a platform for Palestinian artists to share their stories. Making their debut at the Fringe will be Alaa Shehada (Jenin), Diana Sweity (Hebron) Hanna Shammas (Haifa) and Sami Abu-Wardeh (London). READ MORE: David Lammy urged to intervene as Madleen seized by Israel As well as a trio of shows at the Fringe, PalCom will also visit Stand venues in Glasgow and Newcastle. The Stand Comedy Club said it is vital that Palestine is represented at the Fringe this year. Chair of the board Tommy Shepherd said: 'All too often people have forgot the Palestinians have a thriving Mediterranean culture. This is what the Israeli government are trying to extinguish. 'We're delighted to do our part in standing in solidarity with Palestinian artists and helping them reach an international audience.' The Stand has made several moves in support of Palestine including becoming a supporter of Unite Hospitality Glasgow's Serve Solidarity, Boycott Apartheid campaign, which aims to support worker-led boycotts of PepsiCo products and Israeli fresh produce. To help fund travel costs for Palestine Comedy Club, The Stand will also hold two benefit nights that will feature some of Scotland's leading talent in Edinburgh and Glasgow. In Glasgow on Monday, June 16, host Billy Kirkwood will introduce Stuart McPherson, Ray Bradshaw, Christopher Macarthur-Boyd and Susie McCabe. Meanwhile, the Edinburgh benefit will take place on Tuesday, June 24, with Susan Morrison hosting Vladimir McTavish, Marc Jennings, Krystal Evans, Ryan Cullen and Jay Lafferty. PalCom will appear at Newcastle's Stand on Saturday, August 16, before heading to its Edinburgh branch on Monday 18, Tuesday 19 and Wednesday, August 20, with a final stop-off in Glasgow on Thursday, August 21.

June is also Pride Month in Canada: Special themed channels and blog posts will mark these important historic and cultural commemorations. Starting June 9 My Friend the Green Horse by Alanis Obomsawin (2024, NFB) Animation (11 min 20 s) / Press kit Often feeling alone in her waking life, the young Alanis Obomsawin found friendship with the Green Horse, a benevolent being she visited regularly in her dreams. Together with other animal spirits, the Green Horse guided Alanis to realize the immensity of the gift of life and the power of kindness. Starting June 19 The Stand by Christopher Auchter (2024, NFB) Documentary (94 min 33 s) / Press kit Drawn from more than a hundred hours of archival footage and audio, Christopher Auchter's riveting new feature doc recreates the moment when the Haida Nation took a stand for the future. This award-winning film has been an official selection at several festivals in Canada, the United States and the UK. To date, the NFB has produced or co-produced more than 460 works by First Nations, Inuit and Metis filmmakers , one of the largest online collections of Indigenous-made films , exploring stories beyond those of the historically dominant culture. English Collection Curator Camilo Martin-Florez has written a two-part blog post entitled "The Forgotten Reels of Nunavut's Animation Workshop." It explores one of the most captivating and intricate chapters of Indigenous filmmaking at the NFB: the 58 films made by 13 Inuit filmmakers at a 1972 workshop in Kinngait (then known as Cape Dorset), Nunavut. NEW ONLINE RELEASE Starting June 17 King's Court by Serville Poblete (2025, NFB) Documentary (19 min 59 s) / Press kit An intimate look into the lives of two young men navigating life, love, friendship and family in Toronto's Bleecker Street neighbourhood. The film had its world premiere at the Hot Docs film fest. MARKING PRIDE MONTH Starting June 27 Parade: Queer Acts of Love & Resistance by Noam Gonick (2025, NFB) Documentary (96 min) / Press kit The film captures pivotal moments of the activism that sparked Canada's 2SLGBTQI+ movement. The film launched in April at Hot Docs, where it was voted a top ten audience favourite. The original English version of the documentary will be launched on TVO's digital channels at 9 a.m. (EDT) on June 22, and broadcast on TVO at 9 p.m. (EDT). Themed channel This selection of close to 50 short and feature-length doc and animated films continues to grow, with recent additions like A Mother Apart by Laurie Townshend, as well as important films dating back to the 1990s, including Forbidden Love: The Unashamed Stories of Lesbian Lives by Aerlyn Weissman and Lynne Fernie. CELEBRATING THE 2025 GOVERNOR GENERAL'S PERFORMING ARTS AWARDS (GGPAA) LAUREATES Starting June 14 at 9 p.m. (ET) For the 17th year, the NFB is bringing together acclaimed filmmakers to create seven short cinematic tributes to Canadian performing arts legends, as the GGPAA gets set to honour laureates at their Awards Gala, taking place June 14 at the National Arts Centre in Ottawa.
