Darren Aronofsky eyes next film: Enters talks for 'Breakthrough'; Dwayne Johnson set for dark supporting role
Darren Aronofsky Academy-nominated director Darren Aronofsky is said to be in early talks to helm a new psychological drama called 'Breakthrough'. Deadline reports that Dwayne Johnson will be seen breaking away from his action-hero role to play a more complex and demanding part. The actor is not the lead but will reportedly play a central supporting character that is a new trajectory consistent with his increased desire to perform more complicated, character-oriented parts. The film follows an intriguing tale of Southern California in the early 2000s about a lonely young guy who is swept under the wing by a charismatic self-help guru. Under the surface of this inspiring figure, there is a master manipulator with a dark, hidden agenda. Fans of Johnson will next catch him in 'The Smashing Machine,' opening in theatres on October 3. The film represents a significant departure from Johnson's career, signaling a move toward more dramatic, independent fare. His production firm, Seven Bucks Productions, co-founded with longtime collaborator Dany Garcia is also behind Breakthrough in association with Stacey Sher's Shiny Penny Productions. Dwayne Johnson A24 Movie Breakthrough Eyes Oscar Nominated Director
A24 may have found a director for its upcoming film Breakthrough starring Dwayne Johnson, according to a new report from Deadline. According to Deadline's report, Darren Aronofsky is in early conversations to direct the upcoming movie. While a deal is not closed as of yet, it would reunite Aronofsky with A24 following his successful time partnering with the company for 2022's The Whale. Little is known about the movie as of now, but Johnson is rumored to be playing a motivational guru that hides his manipulative ways under a mask of charm. Zeke Goodman is writing the script, with no other casting information available as of yet. 'Set in turn-of-the-millennium Southern California, the story follows an alienated young man who comes under the influence of a motivational guru, whose intoxicating charm masks his morally questionable methods of manipulation and his own concealed darkness,' a description of the movie reads. Stacey Sher's Shiny Penny Productions will produce Breakthrough alongside Johnson and Dany Garcia's Seven Bucks Productions. Jacob Epstein and Justin Wolf serve as executive producers for Lighthouse Management and Media. In 2024, Johnson played Callum 'Cal' Drift in Red One alongside Chris Evans, while he also reprised his voice role as Maui in Disney's Moana 2. Along with The Smashing Machine, he's working on a project with Martin Scorsese that will also star Blunt and Leonardo DiCaprio. A release date for that film, which is about a Hawaiian crime boss, has not yet been set. Additionally, Johnson will soon be seen playing a live-action version of Maui in a remake of Moana that is currently dated for July 10, 2026. The long-awaited sequel is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 1, 2026. In the original 2006 movie, Blunt portrayed the role of senior assistant Emily Charlton. This served as her breakout role, which earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations for Best Supporting Actress. Aside from the sequel, the acclaimed star will also next be seen in several high-profile projects, including A24's sports drama movie The Smashing Machine with Dwayne Johnson, and the untitled Steven Spielberg sci-fi movie with Colman Domingo and Colin Firth. The Rock is Already Set to Star in another A24 Movie After The Smashing Machine
The Rock's image as a celebrity is pretty clear-cut, so it's pretty surprising that he would team-up with a Safdie brother for the biopic The Smashing Machine . Though some consider this an interesting fluke for Johnson's career, it looks like he's already signed up for another artsy movie with A24. As per Discussing Film, the Rock will be starring in Breakthrough , a psychological thriller which will have him play a motivational guru who takes a young man under his wing as he uses 'morally questionable methods of manipulation'. We don't know exactly what the film's theme is set to be, but some guess that the Rock is going to be playing some kind of 'Andrew Tate' character who is going to be a cautionary tale about the rise of misogyny and Hustle culture—especially how it also targets young men. If anything, the Rock already kind of played a 'wealth-fluencer' character like that in HBO's Ballers , but it would make sense if he was cast as that kind of toxic masculine influencer because it does seem like a lot of those kinds of people are aspiring to be someone like Johnson. After the several big-budget, family-friendly flops like Black Adam , some are thinking that Johnson is trying to pull a serious image reboot with The Smashing Machine . I'll admit, I am in the camp that thinks he's kind of washed up artistically, but he's very welcome to prove everyone wrong with this recent slate of projects. Breakthrough has no release date yet, but The Smashing Machine comes to cinemas on Oct. 3.
