Chappell Roan reflects on backlash after Outside Lands debut: ‘It makes me cry'
It's been nearly a year since Chappell Roan scolded Outside Lands festivalgoers in the VIP section for thinking they're 'way too cool' to dance during her set at Golden Gate Park. Now the singer is sharing how the subsequent backlash took an emotional toll. 'I didn't realize I'd care so much,' Roan said in conversation with R&B singer SZA for Interview Magazine published Tuesday, June 17. 'When it comes to my art, I'm like, 'Bitch, you can think whatever you want. You are allowed to hate it with all your guts.' But when it comes to me and my personality, it's like, 'Damn. Am I the most insufferable bitch of our generation?'' The 'Pink Pony Club' singer experienced a meteoric rise to fame last summer following the release of her debut album, 'The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.' It led to her highly-anticipated main stage Outside Lands festival debut, which attracted a reported 50,000 for her afternoon set. But a clip of Roan calling out fans in the VIP section of Outside Lands for not joining in on the choreographed 'Hot To Go!' dance — a 'YMCA'-style routine she taught mid-set — went viral last August, fueling criticism of her personality. While she said she has been able to brush off musical critiques, she admitted that the more personal criticisms have been harder to cope with. Roan — whose real name is Kayleigh Amstutz — quickly made headlines for being outspoken, whether snapping at disrespectful fans and photographers or standing up for LGBTQ+ rights. She responded by sharing several social media videos airing her grievances with sudden fame, explaining that she felt 'unsafe' and wanted to 'set boundaries' with fans. But some interpreted her remarks as the singer being ungrateful. 'When it's not about my art anymore, it's like, 'They hate me because I'm Kayleigh, not because they hate the songs that I make,'' she told SZA. 'I give a f— and it makes me cry. I don't know if it will ever feel okay to hear someone say something really hateful about me.' Though she spent some time out of the public eye after winning her first Grammy Award at the start of the year, Roan is working on her sophomore album and has returned to the festival circuit. During recent appearances, she has even reportedly performed her new country-tinged song, 'The Giver.' Her next festival set is scheduled for Aug. 6 in Oslo, Norway at Øyafestivalen.

Chappell Roan Ties Her Own Best Record With The Smash That Almost Never Was
After years of struggling in the music industry, Chappell Roan finally scored her breakout hit more than a year ago with "Good Luck, Babe!" The tune served as a standalone smash, as she had already released her debut album, The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess – which didn't feature her first smash, somewhat oddly – and the two took off together. "Good Luck, Babe!" became a massive commercial win all around the world. In the United States, its success was bolstered largely by quick and sustained adoption at pop radio. While "Good Luck, Babe!" may have started her run, Roan's single that almost never was has proved to be an even greater success in many respects. As of this frame, "Pink Pony Club" by Roan has spent 29 weeks on the Pop Airplay chart. The cut is now tied with "Good Luck, Babe!" as the singer-songwriter's longest-running success on Billboard's list of the most popular tunes at top 40 pop stations across the U.S. "Pink Pony Club" and "Good Luck, Babe!" are tied with 29 weeks on the Pop Airplay chart apiece, but that likely won't be the case for very long. When Billboard refreshes its rankings in a few days, "Pink Pony Club" will almost certainly score a thirtieth frame on the list, as it's still performing very well. At the moment, it appears at No. 10, down from No. 8. Since the Pop Airplay roster features 40 spots, it seems unlikely that "Pink Pony Club" will fall away for weeks — if not months — and Roan is almost surely headed for a new longest-running smash. "Pink Pony Club" took a very, very long time to become a pop radio staple. The track was originally released in 2020, before many people knew who Roan was. Even after it was featured on The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, it was not initially selected as a favorite by the public, as the masses instead preferred several other tunes from the project. It wasn't until Roan performed the song during the 2025 Grammy Awards that it shot to prominence. Just weeks after the show, "Pink Pony Club" reached No. 1 on the Pop Airplay tally, joining "Good Luck, Babe!" as her only champions. It went on to rule for three weeks, while "Good Luck, Babe!" only held on for a single turn. Now, it's proved to be not just a high-rising smash, but a long-standing one as well.

John Waters Has Encouraged Chappell Roan To Consider Acting
In the pop-star tradition of Cher, Madonna and Lady Gaga, Chappell Roan might add actress to her resume. The Grammy winner revealed that she recently met legendary cult filmmaker John Waters, who encouraged Roan to embrace her inner thespian and give acting a try. More from Deadline John Waters Back In Director's Chair For 'Liarmouth; Indie Icon Writing/Helming for Village Roadshow Entertainment Chappell Roan Will Perform At Elton John's Oscars Party Pedro Almodóvar To Receive 50th Chaplin Award From Film At Lincoln Center; Dua Lipa And John Waters Among Presenters 'I met John Waters last night, which was insane,' she told W Magazine. 'One of my idols! And I was talking about how there are only so many 'firsts' you can have with your career.' Roan continued, 'And he said, 'No, no, no—there are all the firsts to go through when you become an actress!' And I said, 'I'm not an actress—what are you talking about?' He said, 'Every singer is an actress!' And I was like, okay, maybe I am! Damn! If John Waters says I'm an actress, maybe I am!' After breaking out with her 2023 debut studio album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, Roan won her first Grammy this year for Best New Artist. Meanwhile, Waters' two-decade hiatus from filmmaking after his 2004 satire A Dirty Shame was interrupted when Village Roadshow Entertainment optioned his novel Liarmouth: A Feel-Bad Romance in 2022, with Waters set to write and direct. Although Waters said in April 2024 that he had a good script in place, with Aubrey Plaza onboard to star as the titular Marsha 'Liarmouth' Sprinkle, they 'don't have the money to make it.' In November, he revealed that the adaptation is no longer happening.
