The Repair Shop guest 'speechless and blown away' as restoration takes VERY dramatic turn in BBC first

A guest on The Repair Shop was left 'speechless and blown away' as their restoration took a very dramatic turn in a BBC first. The Repair Shop On The Road, a spin-off from the original beloved heirloom restoration show, returned to our screens for a new episode on Wednesday. The BBC series, which began in January, sees the experts leave the workshop to tour the UK, using their skills to keep people's sentimental items in mint condition. Presenters and experts Dominic Chinea and Will Kirk were joined by painting specialist Lucia Scalisi in Glasgow for last night's episode. They met with Kaming, a member of the Scottish city's Hakka Chinese community, who wanted help to restore a Chinese unicorn head to its former glory. The mask, made from fragile bamboo and paper, is used to perform a traditional dance at celebrations like Chinese New Year or weddings. But around 25 years of heavy use had left it looking worse for wear, with the horn in particular needing urgent attention. Kaming explained that to his knowledge, he is the last person in the community who knows how to perform the dance and wants to teach it to generations to come. This made it especially important to get the mask restoration right - so the important cultural tradition it is associated with is not lost forever. Lucia did not let him down, using her specialist skills to bring the mask back to life. Just before unveiling it, she asked: 'Are you looking forward to seeing it?' Kaming could not wait - and when she removed the cloth covering it, he was astonished at what he saw. Gasping and covering his mouth in shock, he said: 'Just speechless! Speechless. It's amazing. 'It's a very big difference especially the actual front here. Looking shiny.' The expert was delighted at his reaction - and expressed her own love for the object too: 'Everything about it is exquisitely beautiful. The symbolism on it is incredible. 'And I think that it will do a very good job for your community centre for years to come. And now I think it's your turn to keep your side of the deal!' It was then a new BBC first occurred as the show quite literally took a dramatic turn. It came as The Repair Shop saw its first ever dance routine performed on-screen in the show's eight-year history. Lucia was invited to the Hakka Chinese community centre to watch Kaming perform with the newly restored mask. She exclaimed: 'I actually don't know what to say, I am truly blown away to have that lovely unicorn do the unicorn dance. 'It was energetic, it was very powerful. It was wonderful! The guest offered her some final words of thanks to close the episode: 'It means a lot to the Chinese community to have it fixed because it represents a whole lot to them.' It comes after another recent episode of The Repair Shop offered up an equally emotional story. The instalment saw presenter Will head to Oldham, Greater Manchester, to collect a vintage fruit machine from guest John Geraghty. He explained his father bought it as a birthday and housewarming gift for his mother nearly five decades ago. But his father sadly died not long after in a car crash - having headed out on a mere ten-minute trip, saying the heartbreaking three words: 'I'll be back.' John recounted the awful day to Will, which started with his father receiving a phone call from a close friend, saying he had broken down: 'Me and my dad always wanted to help somebody out. 'We both jumped in the van, reversed off the drive and as we did, a friend of mine appeared. 'My dad said, "Why don't you jump out of the van? You stay here with Neil - I'll be ten minutes, I'll be back.' Getting out of the van was a split decision that saved John's life: 'A car came out of a junction without stopping. 'By the time the fire brigade got there, unfortunately it was too late.' Will was moved by the tragic story, saying: 'Must've been tough.' John gave a touching reply: 'Yeah because my dad was my soulmate. You know, I'm an only child and me and my dad did everything together. 'I think about it every year and on that day, June 28, and on his birthday. We were so close and it still hurts now.' Asked to describe his father's character, he said fondly: 'He was the life and soul of the party.' The tragic story makes the fruit machine all the more special: 'It's the one big thing we've still got that I can walk past everyday and it reminds me of my dad and it reminds me of my mum. 'It'll be lovely to see it restored and working again.' The Repair Shop team had a mountain to climb when it came to fixing the item - it had a stuck mechanism and damaged paintwork, and John had never seen the lights work. But arcade expert Geoff Harvey rose to the challenge, fully restoring the fruit machine to its former glory over several days - to John's absolute delight.

The Repair Shop's Dominic Chinea opens up on going it alone after quitting job

The Repair Shop's Dominic Chinea has shared his thoughts on quitting a job after he took a big risk when he left his role Dominic Chinea, the metal worker known from The Repair Shop, recently opened up about leaving his job, conceding that "it's never the right time" for such a decision. During a Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Dom delved into his life and career and addressed his followers' curiosities. ‌ Within this revealing session, he was asked about his entrance into television and his pre-The Repair Shop pursuits. ‌ Dom, who has just moved from Kent to Cornwall, recounted his early career: "I got a job in London working for Rankin, a photographer." He detailed his rise through the ranks: "Ended up being his set designer, making props and sets and things for him, which took over a few years, and ended up running his set design department. That was a wild, but amazing, and difficult few years," reports Gloucestershire Live. He shared the bold leap he made into entrepreneurship: "I literally quit my job on the Friday, left there Monday that weekend whenever it was, signed the lease to my workshop, my new workshop in Hackney Wick in East London, which was an absolute derelict workshop, and started my own company being a set designer." The restorer also revealed the gamble involved in his career transition. "The next few months, from there on, were some of the scariest weeks, months, literally, I've ever had," Dominic admitted. Reflecting on those challenging times, he said, "Having that commitment to pay that workshop rent, having no job, no idea where the next job is going to come from, was a really scary time. ‌ "And I think that moment in my life, that time has given me a real appreciation for every single person that comes on to Make it a Market Show. "They've got so many of their situations I can relate to. They've got full-time jobs, they've got real jobs, and they want to do a craft for a living, but it's taking that leap from that full-time job to doing your own thing. ‌ "And I think because I've been there, I can relate, and when I speak to the people on that show and so many other people, I get it. I know how scary it is." The expert reflected on the fear of leaving a stable career and diving into something new, "And there's never the right time. It's never going to feel comfortable, it's never going to feel safe, but sometimes you have got to do what feels right." Trying to encourage those hesitant about making big life changes, Dominic offered, "And even though you don't know all the answers and you're not sure which way it's going to go, what's going to happen, just try and just go for it." He spoke earnestly about his life philosophy: "I'd rather get to later in life and regret having tried something and it failed, than regret not trying it."

The Repair Shop's Dominic Chinea speaks out on 'difficult' move from family home

The Repair Shop expert Dominic Chinea, who has been a staple on the BBC show since 2017, has spoken out on the "difficult" move he made Dominic Chinea, the cherished metalwork pro from The Repair Shop, has been showered with support after his significant move from Kent to Cornwall. Dominic, who has graced our screens in The Repair Shop since 2017, excels in all things metallic. In addition to his appearances on the BBC hit show, he runs his own business and undertakes various personal endeavours. ‌ During a candid Q&A session on his YouTube channel, Dom addressed some of the hottest queries his followers have been itching to ask. ‌ One such query centered around his relocation to Cornwall from Kent, which Dominic described as "sad" and "difficult". Facing the lens, he confessed: "Oh, that's a really difficult one to start with. I thought we were going to start with easy questions," reports Gloucestershire Live. Recounting his days in Kent, he reminisced: "I lived in Kent previously, had a nice garden, nice countryside. It was very nice. But you know what? Why not? Really, moving to Cornwall has meant I've got the house, a lovely field I can turn into a nice garden, and, most importantly, a big barn that is now mine, that is my workshop." Dominic delved into the financial gain of owning versus renting space: "Previously, I rented my old workshop, and every month, I was giving a lot of money to a landlord to rent the space. Now it's my space, and whatever I do to it, it's mine, and that is enough of a reason for me." He also openly acknowledged the current state of his new setup: "Yeah, I will admit there's a lot of work to do, but at least it's mine, and eventually I'll get there, and it will be a decent workshop once again." ‌ Concluding on an optimistic note, he added, "But for the minute, I'm slightly compromised, but I'm working on it. Also, Cornwall is beautiful. It's a lovely place to be." Elsewhere, Dominic also opened up about the distance between him and his long-time mate John, who has been a key figure in his workshop projects. Reflecting on a fan's question, the TV personality shared: "Oh, that's sad. John has been my good friend for a long, long time, years and years. I've known him since I was a kid." ‌ Dominic revealed that relocating to Cornwall has made collaborating with his Essex-based friend John quite challenging. He elaborated, "He is a mechanic. He's got a job-a real job and a full-time job-and he's busy. He's become more and more busy, and he's struggled to come up and spend time in the workshop, which I completely understand now that I've moved to Cornwall. ‌ "I'm seven hours away on the West Coast. We are obviously still speaking and texting all the time. Flights are available from Essex down to Cornwall, and I'm trying to convince him to come down and trying to line up both of our schedules to have a good, long weekend down there is tricky, but we're working on it, and I'm trying my best to make it happen." Dominic concluded with optimism, saying, "So hopefully John will be back on the channel very, very soon. We haven't fallen out. We're still good friends. We still talk." ‌ Following the Q&A session, fans were quick to show their support in the comments section, with one expressing: "Dom, we appreciate you and all your hard work. It's okay if you miss a video here and there; no one will think less of you." Another fan expressed admiration, saying, "Hello Dom. That Q&A was magic. You have done such a lot in a short time, and we can see how much you love it. I hope Wendy gets well. Stay safe and well yourself, and the best of luck with all your many fantastic projects!" A third chimed in with some advice: "Don't burn yourself out, I did that doing too much, it lays you up for months, get yourself a part time helper to take that pressure off. I am better than I was but I still have to take time for myself. You are a fantastic chap, don't make yourself ill." Another follower praised: "You are an amazing man, Dom, there's no getting away from that. I wish you every success for the future." One concerned fan shared: "An absolutely amazing episode, Dom! Well done, and do take time for yourself, aka 'keep some reserve' (I write from experience! ). Thank you."
