First Lady Of Fashion: Michelle Obama Announces New Book, ‘The Look'

Source: Tom Williams / Getty Michelle Obama served the people and served lewks. As FLOTUS, she set a new standard for first ladies as the first Black woman to hold the position. Now, she is walking us through how she did it in The Look. This coffee-table style book, co-written with her stylist Meredith Koop, will revisit the ways she amplified artists like Jason Wu and Prabal Gurung by wearing their designs. It will also highlight how she promoted affordable American retailers like White House Black Market and H&M as First Lady #44. Obama faced unprecedented scrutiny during her time as first lady of the United States. The first lady is an unofficial title but it is one that comes with heavy expectations. Her brand of Black beauty did not fit into the picture of what some people thought should represent our nation. She was criticized for wearing shorts on Air Force One and having the nerve to display her snatched arms. People couldn't fathom that there was not a dowdy, dour, individual seated at the side of the then head of state, President Barack Obama. Every strand of her hair on her head and spot of makeup on her face was up for debate by some. Source: Pool / Getty Others held Michelle Obama in high esteem. They mounted her pictures in barbershops, beauty salons, and funeral parlors. Seeing her appear elegant and poised in that position motivated them. Obama shared what inspired her to give her take on the time period in an Instagram post announcing the upcoming book release. 'During our family's time in the White House, the way I looked was constantly being dissected—what I wore, how my hair was styled. For a while now, I've been wanting to reclaim more of that story, to share it in my own way. I'm thankful to be at a stage in life where I feel comfortable expressing myself freely—wearing what I love and doing what feels true to me. And I'm excited to share some of what I've learned along the way,' she wrote. Obama previously penned the New York Times bestseller, Becoming . She has been sharing her experiences with the public on the IMO podcast she co-hosts with her brother, Craig Robinson. She pulls back the curtain on the other side of some of her most unforgettable moments in the public eye. Source: Drew Angerer / Getty 'My new book, The Look , comes out on November 4. It's a reflection on my lifelong journey with fashion, hair and beauty. Inside, you'll find some of the outfits that have meant the most to me, but more importantly, the moments that I lived through in them—big and small, personal and political, historic and ordinary—that were as memorable as the clothes themselves,' she continued. Obama selected gowns, suits, and sweater sets that sent a message with the help of a team. She is shining a light on their efforts with this new project. 'You'll also get to know the incredible team that supported me through it all and defined my look—my thoughtful stylist @MeredithKoop, my talented makeup artist @CarlRayMUA, and my wonderful hairstylists @YeneDamtew and @KitchenTalkwithNjeri. Each of them brings their own story, heart, and perspective to this journey,' she wrote. Stylists like Law Roach, Jason Bolden, and Wayman + Micah have helped change ideas about what elegance looks like in this country. These are the visionaries that expand palettes by pushing boundaries and subtly making change one piece of fabric at a time. ' The Look is about more than fashion. It's about confidence. It's about identity,' Obama continued writing in the caption. She ended by expressing her desired impact for the project. 'It's about the power of authenticity. My hope is that this book sparks conversation and reflection about the ways we see ourselves—and the way our society defines beauty.' You can pre-order The Look now here. Michelle Obama reveals daughter Malia Obama's name change

Michelle Obama is breaking her silence on eldest daughter Malia Obama's decision to drop her last name. Malia Ann, who is pursuing a film career in Hollywood, used her middle name as her artistic name for the credits of short film "The Heart" which she wrote and directed, that premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2024. During a Wednesday, June 4, appearance on the "Sibling Revelry" podcast cohosted by Oliver and Kate Hudson, Obama addressed Malia's decision to ditch Obama after former President Barack Obama's second term. The Obamas also share University of Southern California alum Sasha Obama. Michelle Obama to publish new book 'The Look' this fall and 'reclaim' fashion story "Our daughters (Malia and Sasha) are 25 and 23. They are young adult women, but they definitely went through a period in their teen years where it was the push away. … They're still doing that," Obama told the Hudson siblings, noting that "you guys know this as the children of parents who are known." Michelle Obama says 'everyone' would know if she divorced Barack Obama: 'I'm not a martyr' The Hudsons are the children of actress Goldie Hawn and previously estranged dad, musician Bill Hudson, although they count Hawn's longterm partner Kurt Russell as a father figure. "It is very important for my kids to feel like they've earned what they are getting in the world, and they don't want people to assume that they don't work hard, that they're just naturally, just handed things," the "Becoming" author added. "They're very sensitive to that – they want to be their own people."On Malia's first project "she took off her last name, and we were like, they're still going to know it's you, Malia," Obama continued. "But we respected the fact that she's trying to make her way." Obama told the Hudson siblings, during the appearance alongside her own brother and "IMO" podcast co-host Craig Robinson, that "our daughters didn't want to be little princesses in the White House." "They wanted to push the envelope; they needed some rope. They wanted to try some things, they wanted to be out in the world, and I knew that under the circumstances, they needed more rope than I probably would've given them if I were my mom," Obama said. Michelle Obama to publish new book 'The Look' this fall and 'reclaim' fashion story

Michelle Obama is adding another book to her author byline, this time with photos of some of her most iconic fashion moments over the years. "The Look" will feature over 200 never-before-published images of Obama, accompanied by writing about her style evolution. Obama is also the author of memoirs "Becoming" and "The Light We Carry," both of which topped USA TODAY's Best-selling Booklist. "The Look," out Nov. 4 from Penguin Random House, is Obama's opportunity to "reclaim" her fashion story after years of criticism over her appearance during her time in the White House. Penguin Random House Audio will simultaneously release an audiobook edition, read by Obama herself. "This book is a celebration of fashion, but more importantly, I hope it is a celebration of confidence, identity, and authenticity, and an inspiration to think deeply about how we choose to define style and beauty," Obama writes in the introduction. "The Look" will also include perspectives from Obama's stylist, makeup artist, hairstylists and longtime designers to bring readers a peek behind the curtain at how her most memorable looks were crafted. First ladies' fashion choices capture public attention, but criticism of Obama was often racially charged. In 2022, Obama shared that she wanted to wear braids during her tenure but decided not to because Americans were 'not ready' and she preferred the focus be on the Obama administration's policies, not her hairstyle. Obama was also ridiculed for wearing a sleeveless dress for her first official portrait, though Jacqueline Kennedy sported the same look during her time in the White House without backlash. "I'm grateful that I've reached the stage in my life where I feel empowered and free to do what I want and wear what I want," Obama writes in "The Look," according to a press release from the publisher. "During our years in the White House, people were constantly commenting on my looks and dissecting my clothing choices. That's part of why I decided to write this book now: it's time for me to reclaim my story – what fashion and beauty mean to me – in my own words." NEW YORK (AP) — Michelle Obama has a new book out this fall that offers a fresh take on her public life, a story not of politics but of fashion. Obama announced on social media Thursday that 'The Look' will be released Nov. 4 by the Crown Publishing Group, a division of Penguin Random House.
