Shanghai Week building global audience for Hong Kong arts and culture

The forward momentum of Hong Kong's arts scene is evident, and it is about to move beyond the city's boundaries. Since its establishment in 2008, the West Kowloon Cultural District Authority has nurtured artistic talent and presented their strengths and creativity through a wide variety of programmes and exhibitions, many of which have won local and international acclaim. Advertisement Now we are embarking on the next step in our mission, which is to help the city's unique cultural programmes go global. The 2025 WestK Shanghai Week , which takes place from June 18-22, marks an important milestone in this ambition. We chose Shanghai for the first major West Kowloon Cultural District (WestK) venture outside Hong Kong for a good reason – the two cities are connected in many ways. Both are vibrant East-meets-West centres of cultural exchange with a truly international outlook. Both cities have rich and diverse heritage that fosters the development of the arts and creative industries, and both are home to sophisticated audiences who always look for fresh and innovative cultural experiences. The best of Hong Kong will be on show in Shanghai this week. Highlighted programmes of 2025 WestK Shanghai Week include the mainland debut of the original Cantonese musical The Impossible Trial , which was a great hit in Hong Kong. Meanwhile, the Hong Kong Palace Museum is staging a brand new exhibition 'City Rhythms: Chinese Traditional Culture Reinterpreted' exhibition at the Zhangyuan complex M+'s highly acclaimed exhibition ' I.M. Pei: Life Is Architecture ', which opened in the Power Station of Art in late April, has generated a real buzz in Shanghai. Advertisement In addition to musicals, the Shanghai audience will see a string of other performing arts genres showcasing Hong Kong's top artistic talent, from traditional Chinese opera and jazz to contemporary dance.

‘The Impossible Trial' musical is coming back to the Hong Kong stage

The award-winning musical The Impossible Trial is returning to Hong Kong audiences for its third run following a tour of mainland China. After gaining incredible momentum since its premiere in 2022, it's great to see the first original Cantonese musical commissioned by WestK being appreciated by a wider audience. The slightly Scrooge-like plot follows Fong Tong-geng, a greedy corrupt barrister in Guangdong, who is dealt a huge blow when he suddenly loses all his wealth and reputation. Haunted by a resentful ghost, Fong tries to redeem himself by beginning to champion the common man in the magistracy. Its intricate storyline is underscored by a fantastic blend of musical styles, including Cantonese opera, 1920s Broadway tunes, ballads, classical, folk-pop, rock, and even nursery rhymes and Buddhist music. Main cast members of The Impossible Trial include Hong Kong stars Lau Shau-ching, Jordan Cheng (last seen in the leading role of Hedwig and the Angry Inch), Tunes Ting, Clinton Zhang, and more. A total of 19 new faces have also been added to the roster for the upcoming performances in mainland China and Hong Kong. Shanghai will be the musical's first port of call, followed by Beijing, after which the show will return to the Xiqu Centre in mid-August. Its third Hong Kong run will feature more than 10 performances, and ticketing details – including early-bird discount prices – will be announced soon. We'll update this space when we learn more, or you can keep an eye out for news on the WestK website.

Hong Kong cultural hub to stage inaugural arts week in Shanghai in June

Hong Kong's West Kowloon Cultural District will stage its inaugural arts week in Shanghai in June, potentially paving the way for similar deals with other mainland Chinese cities. Advertisement The authority behind the arts hub will host the WestK Shanghai Week, which will involve seven cultural and artistic programmes to be held between June 18 and 22. West Kowloon Cultural District Authority CEO Betty Fung Ching Suk-yee told the Post earlier this month that the Shanghai week would serve as a platform to promote Hong Kong's arts, culture and tourism. 'Other than cultural exchanges, we are going to market the Hong Kong brand and attract Shanghai tourists to come to the city,' she said. 'If it works well, we can go to other mainland cities or even overseas cities to do the same thing.' She said the event was supported by Shanghai's municipal government and the Shanghai Municipal Administration of Culture and Tourism. Hong Kong's Economic Trade Office in Shanghai and the Culture, Sports and Tourism Bureau were also providing their support. Advertisement Fung said Hong Kong would be able to show off its home-grown works during the event. She gave the example of the Cantonese musical The Impossible Trial, which would be shown in Shanghai between June 17 and 29.
