Unpacking claims Ilhan Omar's daughter called for 'death to the colonial empire' on Instagram
In June 2025, rumors abounded that Isra Hirsi, daughter of U.S. Rep. Ilhan Omar, a Democrat from Minnesota, had posted "death to the colonial empire" from Los Angeles to Rafah in Gaza on an Instagram story. Instagram stories are posts that disappear after 24 hours unless the accounts that post them highlight them on their profile page. For example, X user End Wokeness shared a screen capture of the supposed Instagram story alongside a photograph of Hirsi with her mother Omar (archived): As of this writing, the End Wokeness post had gained 10,000 and 660,000 views. The screen capture appeared on other X posts, including one by far-right political activist Laura Loomer (archived), who said Hirsi, who is Black, wanted "violence in the LA riots and calling for the end of Western Civilization." Another accused Hirsi of hating her own country, the U.S., and of wanting "a race war" (archived). Further, Snopes users searched the website seeking to confirm the veracity of these claims. In addition, conservative news outlet The Daily Caller published a report making these same allegations. However, due to the nature of Instagram stories and the fact that more than 24 hours had passed since Hirsi supposedly posted it, Snopes could not confirm she had indeed done so. We contacted her via Instagram direct messages to ask whether she had and we will update the story should she respond. However, we were able to confirm that the Instagram story Hirsi allegedly reposted did exist. It was created by Instagram user @__public_library, whose bio gave a first name — Amanda — self-describing as a writer, care worker, mother and a "revert" — which is how some converts to Islam describe themselves. The term "reversion" is sometimes preferred to the term "conversion," based on the belief that babies who are born with a Muslim nature and raised in other religions and cultures will return to their innate Muslim nature. Indeed, one of her stories on June 11, 2025, indicated @__public_library had "reverted" in September 2024: (Instagram user @__public_library) Many of her posts related to the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as a result of the Israel-Hamas war. Indeed, on June 8, 2025, @__public_library posted a series of images with text and a song by Natalia Lafourcade titled "Hasta la Raíz" (archived). One of the images was the same that appeared in Hirsi's alleged Instagram story, showing children playing jump rope on a dirt road with the text: "From LA to Rafah, there is one common oppressor. Death to the colonial empire. Life for our children." The post appeared to draw a parallel between the Israel-Hamas war and the confrontations between protesters in Los Angeles and Immigration and Customs Enforcement on the weekend of June 9, 2025. Below the post, the user had written the following (emphasis ours): I am the Granddaughter of Mexican migrants.I am the daughter of an occupied land.I am the mother of resistance.I am both witness and the keeper of generational is a never-ending empires must end in occupied "America" to occupied Palestine We found no indication that Hirsi followed @__public_library, though it is not necessary to follow a public Instagram account to reshare one of their posts. Hirsi, who is Black and a Muslim, has also frequently posted in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza, including on posts that aimed to share personal news. For example, she used the tag #FreePalestine in the post where she announced her graduation from Barnard College at Columbia University. The post also included a photo of her holding up a Palestinian flag on stage during the graduation ceremony (archived):In April 2025, Hirsi said she had been suspended from Barnard College after taking part in a pro-Palestine protest on campus (archived): As of this writing, there isn't enough evidence to determine whether Hirsi did or did not reshare @__public_library's Instagram story. We will update this article if and when Hirsi responds to our request for comment. Ibrahim, Nur. "What We Know about Trump Deploying National Guard for LA Protests." Trump nominates Paul Ingrassia to lead Office of Special Counsel
President Trump nominated former right-wing podcaster Paul Ingrassia to lead the Office of Special Counsel (OSC), a key role for protecting whistleblowers and enforcing laws against electioneering. Ingrassia is currently serving as a White House aide but was formerly a writer for The Daily Caller and hosted the podcast Right On Point. He is also an attorney, and previously served on the legal team representing self-described misogynist Andrew Tate. 'I am pleased to nominate Paul Ingrassia to head the United States Office of Special Counsel (OSC),' Trump wrote on his social media site. 'Paul is a highly respected attorney, writer, and Constitutional Scholar, who has done a tremendous job serving as my White House Liaison for Homeland Security.' Ingrassia will take the reins of the OSC at a key time for the agency. Trump fired previous special counsel Hampton Dellinger, even after he was confirmed to a five-year term for the role under President Biden. Dellinger initially contested his firing and prevailed in court, staying in his post and forwarding challenges to Trump's plans for widespread firings of probationary employees – those hired within the last year or two. But an appeals court then declined to keep Dellinger in his role while the legal battle advanced, pushing him to quit. Without Dellinger on the job, the OSC has switched positions on cases now before the Merit Systems Protection Board – another board where Trump has sought to fire leadership appointed to several-year terms. That includes fighting to keep probationary workers in their roles. If confirmed, Ingrassia would also be responsible for enforcing the Hatch Act, which prohibits federal employees from campaigning for a candidate while on the job. During the first Trump administration, officials repeatedly ran afoul of the law, in particular then-aide Kellyanne Conway, who was cited for numerous violations. In his prior life as a conservative commentator, Ingrassia lavished praise on Tate, calling him the 'embodiment of the ancient ideal of excellence' for his 'sheer physical prowess' and being 'sharp as a tack' and full of 'willpower and spirit.' Tate has been charged with human trafficking in Romania as well as rape in the United Kingdom. Ingrassia has also pushed for Nick Fuentes, a far-right activist who has espoused white supremacist and antisemitic views, to be reinstated to Twitter, now known as X, calling it a First Amendment issue in a Substack post.

Gun suppressor tax may be eliminated under new bill
Second Amendment advocacy groups urged House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and Senate Majority Leader John Thune (R-S.D.) on Wednesday to pass legislation to eliminate both a tax on firearm suppressors and the national suppressor registry. In a letter obtained by The Daily Caller, dozens of Second Amendment groups, including the American Suppressor Association, the National Rifle Association, and Gun Owners of America, called on Republican lawmakers to include Section 2 of the Hearing Protection Act in an upcoming reconciliation bill. The Hearing Protection Act states that it would establish 'equal treatment of silencers and firearms' by amending 'the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to remove silencers from the definition of firearms, and for other purposes.' According to The Daily Caller, the legislation would remove a $200 tax on firearm suppressors that was instituted following the National Firearms Act of 1934. 'The National Firearms Act of 1934 (NFA) is an unconstitutional tax scheme that impedes the ability of all Americans to exercise their Second Amendment rights,' the Second Amendment advocacy groups wrote. 'On behalf of the American Suppressor Association and law-abiding gun owners nationwide, we call on Congress to permanently remove suppressors from the unconstitutional NFA tax scheme by inserting Section 2 of the Hearing Protection Act into the reconciliation bill.' Wednesday's letter claimed that American citizens 'should not be taxed' for a device that provides safety and prevents 'irreversible damage' to the hearing of those who use firearms while 'exercising their Constitutional rights.' READ MORE: New gun law bans some semiautomatic guns in Colorado According to the Daily Caller, the purchase of a firearm suppressor currently requires U.S. citizens to complete a background check, purchase a suppressor from a licensed dealer, register the suppressor, and pay a suppressor tax. Wednesday's letter noted that the proposed legislation would still require individuals to purchase suppressors from licensed dealers and complete a background check. Critics of gun silencers have argued that firearm suppressors are 'inherently dangerous devices' that can be used by criminals to carry out 'ambush attacks' and evade law enforcement officials by reducing the noise of gunshots. 'Silencers put law enforcement and the public at grave risk by making it more difficult to identify nearby gunshots and locate an active shooter, and they should not be widely available to civilians,' the Giffords Law Center states on its website. On the other hand, American Suppressor Association President Knox Williams told The Daily Caller that firearms are still loud even when equipped with suppressors. 'You still need to wear hearing protection when using a suppressor because they are not quiet,' Williams said. 'Anyone who tells you that a silencer is a threat to public safety has never fired a suppressed weapon or been around one.'

Video: Trump questions cover-up of Biden's cancer diagnosis, cognitive issues
President Donald Trump questioned on Monday why former President Joe Biden's cancer was not caught before advancing to an 'aggressive' stage and suggested that 'people should try and find out what happened' and whether there was a connection between the cover-up of Biden's cognitive decline and his seemingly delayed cancer diagnosis. In comments to reporters at the White House on Monday, Trump described Biden's cancer diagnosis as 'very sad' and acknowledged that he was 'surprised' the public was not 'notified a long time ago' since it takes a 'long time' for prostate cancer to 'get to stage nine.' 'If it's the same doctor who said there was nothing wrong there, that's being proven to be a sad situation,' Trump said. 'In other words, there are things going on that the public wasn't informed,' Trump added. 'And I think somebody is going to have to speak to his doctor, if it's the same or even if it's two separate doctors. Why wasn't the cognitive ability — why wasn't that discussed? I think the doctors said he's just fine, and it's turned out that's not so. It's very dangerous. Look, this is no longer politically correct. This is dangerous for our country.' READ MORE: Pic: Biden diagnosed with 'aggressive' cancer Trump also questioned why it took so long for Biden to be publicly diagnosed with prostate cancer when the disease takes a long time to advance. 'It can take years to get to this level of danger,' Trump told reporters. 'So it's a — look, it's a very, very sad situation, and I feel very badly about it, and I think people should try and find out what happened.' Trump added, 'Somebody is not telling the facts. That's a big problem.' Trump: I think it's very sad, actually. I'm surprised that it wasn't—you know—the public wasn't notified a long time ago, because to get to stage 9, that's a long time. I just had my physical. You saw that. You saw the results of that particular test. I think that test is… — Acyn (@Acyn) May 19, 2025 Following Biden's personal office's announcement on Sunday that the 82-year-old former president had been diagnosed with an 'aggressive' form of prostate cancer that was 'characterized by a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5) with metastasis to the bone,' multiple medical experts have expressed concerns regarding the late diagnosis. Medical experts told The Daily Caller that since prostate cancer typically takes at least five years to spread to a person's bones, Biden likely had prostate cancer during his term in the White House. Atossa Genetics CEO Dr. Steven Quay told The Daily Caller, 'It's not credible that we are hearing of his metastatic disease for the first time because he was having difficulty urinating and they found it. That just doesn't track.'
