James Gunn Defends Matt Reeves Amid THE BATMAN: PART II Delays: 'People Should Get Off Matt's Nuts" — GeekTyrant

James Gunn isn't here for your impatience and he's making that clear when it comes to The Batman: Part II . With the sequel's release date pushed to 2027 and some fans getting antsy, Gunn is stepping in to remind everyone that storytelling takes time, especially when the person behind it is someone as meticulous and committed as Matt Reeves. Originally slated for 2025, The Batman: Part II has seen multiple delays, now targeting an October 1, 2027 release. But according to Gunn, there's a very simple reason behind the wait. He previously said: 'The only reason for the delay is there isn't a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt's committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. 'Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.' Gunn recently told Entertainment Weekly that a script draft is expected soon. 'I hope that happens. We feel really good about it. Matt's excited. I talk to Matt all the time. I'm totally excited about it. So we can't wait to read the scripts, but we haven't read it yet.' Reeves is teaming up with Mattson Tomlin again for the screenplay. While that's been happening, Reeves hasn't exactly been idle. He's been overseeing HBO's The Penguin , co-producing the upcoming animated series Batman: Caped Crusader , and is involved with the horror-themed Clayface movie being developed for Gunn's DC Universe. Still, the online pressure to hurry things along hasn't gone unnoticed by Gunn, who didn't hold back. 'People should get off Matt's nuts because it's like, let the guy write the screenplay in the amount of time he needs to write it. That's just the way it is. He doesn't owe you something because you like his movie. I mean, you like his movie because of Matt. So let Matt do things the way he does.' Gunn also added that Reeves doesn't pay much attention to social media chatter, but the criticism has gotten under his skin. 'He's got a lot of other things happening, so I don't think he lets it affect him. He's fine. But I am irritated by people.' And then came the mic-drop moment: 'It's just that thing people don't need to be entitled about. It's going to come out when he feels good about the screenplay. And Matt's not going to give me the screenplay until he feels good about the screenplay.' Reeves himself acknowledged back in January that Batman: Part II is 'taking longer than I would have wanted,' but also said, 'I'm super excited about what we're doing, so I really can't wait to share that with everybody.' He also confirmed he's interested in more spin-offs once the sequel is underway: 'The big priority is to get The Batman 2 shooting and going. And then it'll be exciting where we'll go from there.' With Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Andy Serkis, and Jeffrey Wright all expected to return, The Batman: Part II is shaping up to be worth the wait… if fans can keep their cool.

‘The Batman 2' Is ‘Still Really Important Despite Stories to the Contrary,' Says James Gunn Amid Rumors of Sequel Being Axed: ‘We're Supposed to See the Script Shortly'

DC Studios co-chief James Gunn said in a recent Entertainment Weekly interview that Matt Reeves and Robert Pattinson's 'The Batman Part II' remains an 'important' tentpole for the company, contrary to reports that Gunn cares more about launching the new DC Universe with films like this July's 'Superman.' Reeves' Caped Crusader movies exist in the 'Batman Epic Crime Saga,' which exists outside of Gunn's DCU and includes properties like the hit series 'The Penguin' 'What Matt's doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary,' Gunn said. 'We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait.' Making Him Shorten 'Superman' Runtime: 'They Couldn't Even if That's Something That They Wanted' It's been a long development road for 'The Batman' sequel, which Warner Bros. delayed late year from Oct. 2, 2026 to Oct. 1, 2027. The first movie, which introduced Pattinson as the new Dark Knight, opened in theaters in 2022 and grossed $772 million at the worldwide box office. Pattinson said on his 'Mickey 17' press tour earlier this year that he was more than ready to get back in costume. 'I fucking hope so,' Pattinson answered when co-star Naomi Ackie asked if he would be playing Batman again soon. 'I started out as young Batman and I'm going to be fucking old Batman by the sequel.. I'm 38, I'm old.' Pattinson spoke to Variety at the 'Mickey 17' premiere in London and said he expected to be filming 'The Batman Part II' by the end of 2025. 'And I know what it's about but I can't tell anyone,' he added, 'but it's like, it's very cool. It's very exciting.' While 'The Batman' sequel will now open more than five years after the original, Gunn has defended the delay on social media by writing: 'To be fair, a 5-year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between 'Alien' and 'Aliens.' 14 years between 'Incredibles.' 7 years between the first two 'Terminators.' 13 years between 'Avatars.' 36 years between 'Top Guns.' And, of course, 6 years between 'Guardians Vol 2' and 'Vol 3.'' 'Matt [Reeves] is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write,' Gunn added in a separate post. 'Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films.' Gunn has stressed repeatedly that no movie will go into production under the DC Studios banner without a completed script. His DC Universe kicks off this summer with 'Superman,' in theaters July 11. James Gunn offers clarity on Robert Pattinson's future in DCU and delays to the Batman Part II

DC Studios co-head James Gunn has addressed speculation surrounding Robert Pattinson's potential inclusion in the main DC Universe and provided an update on the status of The Batman Part II. Speaking with Rolling Stone, Gunn clarified ongoing rumours but left the door slightly ajar, stating, 'I would never say zero, because you just never know. But it's not likely. It's not likely at all.' This suggests that there are no current plans for Pattinson's Batman to join the mainline DCU alongside David Corenswet's Superman, who will debut in Superman this July. Fan hopes for a unified DCU Trinity featuring Superman, Wonder Woman, and Batman remain in flux, especially with the DCU's Batman-centric film, The Brave and the Bold, still without a lead actor. Meanwhile, Matt Reeves' The Batman Part II, a standalone sequel in a separate continuity, continues to face development delays. Originally expected to deliver a script in early 2024, Reeves and co-writer Mattson Tomlin have yet to finalise the screenplay. This has pushed the film's release to October 1, 2027. Amid online speculation that the sequel might be cancelled, Gunn addressed the concerns directly. 'Batman Part II is not canceled. We don't have a script. Matt's slow. Let him take his time,' Gunn stated, dismissing cancellation rumours and encouraging patience from fans. Gunn also disputed recent reports claiming the script was expected by Memorial Day, noting on Threads that such expectations were unfounded. As development continues, it now appears unlikely that production will begin in 2025. Despite growing frustrations over the delay, DC Studios appears committed to allowing Reeves the time he needs to develop the sequel. For now, The Batman Part II remains on track for a 2027 release, albeit with an uncertain production timeline.

Robert Pattinson's 'Batman 2' Gets New Update Drawing Conflicting Fan Reactions

It's been more than three years since Robert Pattinson's The Batman hit theaters, and fans continue to wait for the next big step forward toward the sequel. The film, which Matt Reeves directed, premiered in March 2022, and the follow-up movie is still expected to be made. However, the timeline remains a question mark. Roughly one month before the release of the new Superman movie, DCU's co-CEO, James Gunn, sat down with Entertainment Weekly and provided a few significant updates. While the news of an upcoming Wonder Woman film was the most noteworthy takeaway from the June 10 interview, Gunn did address the state of The Batman Part II. Gunn stated that Pattinson "is still there" for Reeves' movie; however, his update on where things stand with the film led to a major split regarding how fans reacted. "What Matt's doing is still really important, despite all stories to the contrary," Gunn comments. "We're supposed to see that script shortly, and I can't wait." The comments show that some fans remain incredibly excited about the sequel. They also prove that many others are becoming frustrated with the lack of true updates and the slow process to get the ball rolling on The Batman Part II. "I love Robert Pattinson as Batman, and Matt Reeves is doing that world justice… let him cook," wrote one fan. "Loved the first one hope this one moves along soon," added another. "Oh wow Batman and the new Superman can't wait to see their stories clash," replied another fan. Mixed in with the positive responses were questions from others about the delay in the script, as well as frustration about any realistic timeline for the movie's release."Once they start shooting it's a minimum 2 years before it releases so we ain't seeing that till 2030," read one comment. 'Wasn't the script supposed to be sent like weeks ago?" added another fan with a crying emoji. 'How have they not received the script yet???? What are they doing?" read a frustrated response. "Every week they're about to see the script," replied a fan. Although Gunn has remained adamant that The Batman Part II is coming, even Pattinson jokingly mentioned the lengthy delay when Naomi Ackie asked if he'd play Batman again during an interview with Hero Magazine in May. "I f***ing hope so," Pattinson said with a laugh. "I started out as young Batman and I'm going to be f***ing old Batman by the sequel." Gunn has given a fair amount of updates on the project, even if he doesn't have much new information. Here's to hoping that the next tidbit he provides about The Batman Part II includes news on casting or a potential timeline for the movie's Pattinson's 'Batman 2' Gets New Update Drawing Conflicting Fan Reactions first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 10, 2025

SGT. ROCK Story and Character Details Revealed; Cillian Murphy and Mikey Madison Offered Roles — GeekTyrant

The war-torn world of Sgt. Rock was almost brought to life as a feature film, that is until DC Studios pulled the plug on the production. While the project is currently shelved, new intel from Nexus Point News offers new details on what could've been a gritty, character-driven WWII action epic from filmmaker Luca Guadagnino ( Call Me By Your Name , Bones and All ). Let's start with the casting carousel: Colin Farrell had reportedly entered talks to play the grizzled war hero Sgt. Frank Rock after both Daniel Craig and Jeremy Allen White passed on the role. Farrell's involvement was always tenuous, especially with The Batman Part II ramping up. Meanwhile, Oppenheimer star Cillian Murphy was also offered the lead, but he turned it down. On the female lead side, the role of Mademoiselle Marie, who is Rock's love interest and a fierce freedom fighter, was offered to both Mikey Madison ( Scream , Once Upon a Time in Hollywood ) and Waves breakout Taylor Russell. As for the story, 'The film would have followed Sgt. Frank Rock, Mademoiselle Marie, and the Easy Company as they fight the Nazis in a battle to recover the Spear of Destiny in World War 2.' So, that sounds like it would've been a lot of fun! Easy Company itself was stacked with the following characters: Bulldozer : The hotheaded muscle of the group, late 20s. Wildman : Rock's loyal right-hand medic with a big red beard. Jackie Johnson : Former heavyweight boxer, mid-20s. Sure Shot : A sharp-eyed Apache sniper. Bean Pole : A lanky 19-year-old grenadier and translator. Dash : An 18-year-old track star turned ammo bearer (reportedly named Philip Mason, a nod to Ice Cream Soldier). Four Eyes : A nerdy 19-year-old comic book artist—yes, really. Junior : Just 17, enlisted after lying about his age. Johnny Doe: An original creation—a soldier who notches kills on his rifle like trophies. Challengers star Mike Faist was reportedly set to play Johnny Doe, reuniting with Guadagnino. David Jonsson ( Rye Lane , Alien: Covenant ) had been eyed for Jackie Johnson, but that didn't pan out. The film would've been shot mostly outdoors on location in the UK over six weeks, but weather conditions reportedly played a role in halting progress. There's been talk of trying again in 2026, but with Guadagnino already juggling projects like American Psycho , Separate Rooms , and Lord of the Flies , that window might be closing. Some insiders have speculated that 'Guadagnino remained untested in the realm of action movies, and even though the budget was in the $70 million range, a paltry sum for comic book movies, higher-ups may have wavered in their confidence.' So will Sgt. Rock ever see the battlefield? Hard to say. It's a cool, offbeat corner of the DC Universe, one that blends war drama, supernatural elements, and classic comic grit. We'll just have to wait and see if the movie eventually gets made one day.
