IKEA to offer click and collect service at Tesco Ayr as Swedish giant makes move into town

The Swedish firm has joined forces with Tesco Extra, in Ayr, to offer home improvement enthusiasts a break from travelling to Glasgow to pick up their flat-pack goods. IKEA has teamed up with Tesco to help take some of the pain out of DIY. The Swedish firm has joined forces with Tesco Extra, in Ayr, to offer home improvement enthusiasts the chance to pick up their goods nearer to home. ‌ Those who purchase goods from Ikea's stores can save on the petrol mileage - and pick up their gear from a secure lock-up on Whitletts Road - if plans are approved. ‌ It's all part of a planning application, lodged with South Ayrshire Council, seeking permission for IKEA 'Pick-Up' Lockers at Tesco Extra, Whitletts Road. It's designed to create a more 'accessible shopping experience' for IKEA customers. A supporting statement said: 'In response to IKEA's growing market demand and the popularity of online retail, IKEA has partnered with Tesco to allow IKEA orders to be collected from within Tesco car parks, creating a more accessible shopping experience for its customers. 'There has been a mobile pick-up point operating at the site for IKEA collections over recent months. The pick-up point has proved successful, and the proposals aim to provide a permanent, secure and attractive service for customers, with items available for collection at any time.' The proposed pick-up lockers will be located to the west of the Tesco Ayr car park, positioned on an existing area of hardstanding which is currently used for 12 car parking spaces. The positioning of the pick-up lockers will have 'minimal impact' on the operation of the existing access routes, according to the application. ‌ The planning statement continues: 'The lockers will be a contemporary design, with the colours consistent with the IKEA brand (i.e. blue and yellow) to assist customers in identifying the location of the lockers. 'The varying sizes of lockers allows the facility to accommodate a range of order from home accessories and homewares to furniture.' If approved, then integrated LED lighting and an overhead canopy will ensure customers can safely access their goods. Customers will be able to collect their order once they receive a 6-digit code which will open the appropriate locker. ‌ The statement continues: 'Online sales have increased across the IKEA business and so it is necessary to extend its Click & Collect services to meet such demand. 'The lockers build on the existing partnership between IKEA and Tesco, which has seen over 100 mobile pick-up points launch at Tesco stores across the UK. 'While the mobile pick-up points allow products to be collected during certain time windows, with the new lockers, items can be picked up at any time, providing more flexibility and improved accessibility for customers.' The statement adds: 'The proposals will enable IKEA to meet their growing market demand via locally accessible means and make efficient use of space within the Tesco Extra car park.' The proposals are listed as 'pending consideration' on South Ayrshire Council's online planning portal and a decision on them is expected in August.

IKEA has shut two UK stores today just weeks after opening a massive new Oxford Street shop. The retail giant, founded in Sweden in 1943, announced its plans to close the Aintree Plan and Order Point store in Liverpool earlier this month. 1 Ikea has closed two stores today (stock) Credit: Getty The smaller Plan & Order Point store provided customers with home furnishing guidance and was devoted to kitchen and bedroom planning. The Aintree store closed its doors for the final time today. According to Ikea, the closure was "a result of valuable learnings which will take the conceptual format in a direction to better suit the needs of UK customers." IKEA Stockport in Merseyway Shopping Centre, which opened just two years ago has also ceased operations today. Current Stockport customers are now being directed to the next nearest main IKEA store, the branch in Ashton-under-Lyne in Tameside. Locals can also now pick up their IKEA purchases from Tesco Extra in Stockport and the Tesco Extra in Stretford as part of Click and Collect. Other Plan and Order points, such as the ones in Dundee, York and Hull, will be adapted to meet those new demands and also include a small range of home furnishing accessories to buy. A spokesperson for Ikea said: 'There has been an increased demand for Click and Collect services, a desire to shop a smaller selection of home furnishing accessories, as well as the ability to return goods to physical IKEA units, something which, owing to the space available, the current location is unable to offer. 'To better service its customers, future Plan and Order Point openings, including in Dundee, Hull and York will offer these services. I did a haul of the new Oxford Street Ikea whilst on my lunch break & I managed to kit out with bargains under £3 "IKEA also remains committed to trialling new formats including its upcoming small stores, one of which will open in Chester later this year.' The Swedish retailer had 22 stores across the UK after opening its first branch in Warrington, Cheshire in 1987. IKEA recently opened a new shop on London's Oxford Street. It's set over three floors and 5,400 square metres compared with the average size of 30,000 square meters for most of IKEA's locations. You'll be pleased to know that along with the Swedish meatballs, the bargain hot dogs, fish and chips, and Daim cake are all still on the menu. A plate of eight meatballs served with mashed potatoes, peas, cream sauce and lingonberry jam costs its usual bargain price of £5.50. It comes after IKEA opened its own hotel in the Canary Islands. Boasting cheap rooms, a swimming pool and breakfast, it also offers some of their most popular homeware items. Las Dunas de Santa Catalina Boutique House is a new two-star hotel owned by the interiors brand in Gran Canaria. Rooms start from £105 a night, which includes a continental breakfast, and works out to just over £50 a night for two people.

Jail for man who robbed couple at knifepoint in Louth shopping centre

Morgan Ryan (26), with an address at the time of Dundalk Simon Community, pleaded guilty to a charge of robbery at Tesco Extra, Stapleton Drive, Dundalk, on April 27, 2024. The circuit court was asked to take into consideration charges of possession of a knife and making a threat to kill or cause serious harm. Evidence was given last March that the defendant had gone up to several people that evening including an elderly lady on a mobile phone who ignored him before he targeted a male and female as they walked towards a covered car park around 7.25pm. CCTV footage of the interaction was viewed in court. Gda Ciarán McTeague said the victims were walking back to their car when they were approached by a man 'frothing at the mouth' and holding in his hand a partially crushed energy drink can. He asked them for €3 for his girlfriend to get a bus. The man told him that he didn't carry cash. Mr Ryan reached into his pocket and said, 'I will stab you in the neck'. The woman was 'in genuine fear for her life' when she saw that he had a serrated steak-knife. Her companion indicated that he would withdraw money from a nearby ATM. The three people walked to the ATM beside an escalator. Mr Ryan was holding the knife in his hand. ADVERTISEMENT When he was given a €20 note he calmed down and remarked that he was there to protect people like them. He walked with the couple and tried to hug and kiss them. Gda McTeague said the young woman cried with relief when they got to the car. The couple went to the garda station. There were previous convictions including for robbery, attempted robbery, possession of knives and production of an article. It was stated on Mr Ryan's behalf that he was born in the UK and placed in foster care when he came to Ireland. His foster mother passed away two years ago, and he was refused permission to attend the funeral by the prison governor. He had been in custody most of his adult life and had spent the last eight Christmases inside. The defendant took drugs and alcohol and got into a lot of trouble as a child and teenager. He had taken drugs in custody but was clean for the last month. Counsel said what he did in Tesco Extra was an 'incredibly stupid action in an intoxicated state'. Passing sentence, Judge Dara Hayes said he suspected that the couple would have done anything to get away from Morgan Ryan. What he carried out was done under fear, duress and threat. The female made a Victim Impact Statement. The incident had a considerable impact on her. Judge Hayes imposed a three-and-a-half year sentence, backdated to April 29, 2024, when the defendant went into custody. The final 12 months were suspended on condition that he place himself under Probation Service supervision for 12 months and complete a residential drug treatment programme and aftercare upon his release. He must also be drug- and alcohol-free and provide urinalysis if requested. Funded by the Courts Reporting Scheme
