Analyst Says Dollar General Is Winning Tariff War — Should You Invest?
Many retail stocks have been battered this year because of worries over how President Donald Trump's tariff plans will impact the sector. But there have been some exceptions — including Dollar General, which has bucked the trend by producing strong financials and a surging stock price so far in 2025. I'm a Self-Made Millionaire: Consider This: If you're thinking about investing in the Tennessee-based discount chain, read on to learn if this is a good time. One analyst who's bullish on Dollar General is BMO Capital Markets' Kelly Bania. Earlier this month, she raised her price target to $115 from $90 while maintaining a 'market perform' rating on the stock. That move came after Dollar General beat quarterly estimates for both revenue and earnings, and raised its sales and profit forecasts for the year. Why has Dollar General outperformed expectations when so many other retailers have struggled to find their footing? 'They are just executing better,' Bania said in comments reported by ModernRetail. 'When you go into stores, the in-store experience is better.' Explore More: Dollar General's better execution is reflected in its financial results. It logged fiscal first-quarter earnings of $1.78 a share, up from $1.65 the previous year and well ahead of analyst views for $1.48, CNBC reported. Revenue gained 5.3% to $10.44 billion, topping estimates for $10.31 billion. Same-store sales rose 2.4%. Following its earnings report, Dollar General raised its outlook for earnings, net sales growth and same-store sales growth. Meanwhile, its stock price was up by about 49% year-to-date through June 17, 2025, closing the day at $113.32 per share. That far outpaces the performances of both the S&P 500 (up 1.7%) and the Dow (down 0.77%). As CNBC noted, Dollar General's outlook stands in stark contrast to retailers like Best Buy, Macy's and Abercrombie & Fitch, which have cut their profit outlooks due to tariffs. Even Walmart has said it will raise prices due to tariffs, despite pushback from Trump. One of Dollar General's strategies has been to reduce its exposure to China so it can limit its price hikes, CEO Todd Vasos said in a Q1 conference call. 'While the tariff landscape remains dynamic and uncertain, we expect tariffs to result in some price increases as a last resort, though we intend to work to minimize them as much as possible,' Vanos said. How does Dollar General compare with other discount retailers? Here's a look at how other stocks have performed during the first half of 2025: : up 31.2% through June 17 : up 18% : up 4.3% : down 29.7% As these performances show that fellow deep-discount chains Dollar Tree and Five Below have also produced decent stock gains in a challenging environment — but Dollar General's increase is nearly twice as much as the next-closest rival. As for whether you should invest in Dollar General, most Wall Street analysts expect its stock price to keep inching higher, but only by a little. As of June 17, the average recommendation of 33 analysts cited by MarketWatch was 'overweight.' The average price target was $113.50 per share, which represented a premium of about 3% over its June 17 closing price. US trucker Forward Air attracts takeover interest from buyout firms, sources say
By Svea Herbst-Bayliss and Abigail Summerville NEW YORK (Reuters) -Private equity firms including Blackstone and Apollo Global Management have expressed interest in acquiring U.S. trucker Forward Air, people familiar with the matter said. They signed confidentiality agreements with the company, allowing them to review documents and receive other information to shape a potential bid. Platinum Equity and Clearlake Capital are also able to review material after having signed agreements, the sources said. Initial takeover bids are due to be submitted during the first week of July, added the sources, who noted there was no guarantee the quartet of buyout firms would submit offers. There is also a possibility other suitors may emerge. The sources spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private deliberations. The company declined to comment, as did Blackstone and Apollo. Platinum and Clearlake were not immediately available for comment. Forward Air, which specializes in moving hauls which do not take up a full truckload, said earlier this week it is committed to advancing its strategic alternatives review, which was announced in January and could include a sale of the company. Shares in the Greeneville, Tennessee-based company have tumbled from $121 in late 2021 to roughly $20 now, shrinking its market valuation to roughly $610 million. But on a fully diluted basis, including net debt, analysts said the company's enterprise value is closer to $2.5 billion. Private equity investors may be interested in Forward Air because they see a path to growth for the company which is already the dominant player in a niche area of the transportation market, but fell on tough times after an unpopular acquisition in 2024. The company bought freight forwarder Omni Logistics in a deal that was not voted on by shareholders, added debt and created operational disruptions, the analysts added. Not long after the deal was finalized in early 2024, several investors began pressuring the company to review its business, which resulted in the company's January 2025 announcement. Frustrated by little visible movement on the review, activist investor Ancora Holdings, which owns 4% of the company, in May mounted a campaign to remove three long-serving directors that it blamed for signing off on the Omni deal and stalling the sales process. The withhold campaign was a success and the trio resigned this week after the company's annual meeting.

Forward Air chairman, 2 directors leave after shareholder vote
Forward Air announced Thursday that Chairman George Mayes has resigned following the company's annual shareholder meeting. Per the less-than-truckload carrier's corporate governance guidelines, board members not receiving at least 50.1% of shareholder support are required to step down. Directors Javier Polit and Laurie Tucker did receive the majority vote required to remain on the board but voluntarily resigned, 'in order to permit the Board and management to continue focusing on the Company's operations, transformation plan and comprehensive strategic alternatives review,' a news release stated. Activist investor Ancora Holdings Group had targeted for removal the three directors in the weeks leading up to the company's annual meeting held on Wednesday. Ancora called the three 'unfit legacy directors' and blamed them for overseeing the company's 'disastrous acquisition of Omni Logistics.' Ancora also accused the group of 'slow-walking' a strategic review, which could culminate in the sale of Forward to private equity. The Omni acquisition was structured through a series of transactions that circumvented a vote from shareholders. The transaction placed a large debt burden on Forward (5.3 times net leverage at the end of the first quarter) and gave Omni's private equity backers control over a 38% voting bloc that is required to vote for board-nominated pressure from shareholders, Forward announced in January that it would execute a strategic review of all options. Shares of Greeneville, Tennessee-based FWRD (NASDAQ: FWRD) are off roughly 80% since the merger was announced in August 2023. The business combination, which was expected to reap the synergies and economics of integrating a freight forwarder with an expedited capacity provider, has yet to live up to initial projections. 'George, Javier and Laurie have been dedicated directors, offering critical leadership, insight and experience over their respective tenures and we thank them for their service,' a statement from the board read. 'Looking ahead, we are committed to advancing the Company's strategic alternatives review – which is well underway – and continued global transformation in order to improve operating results and maximize shareholder value. We will continue to work closely with the management team to realize the Company's full intrinsic value.'Forward's board now includes just eight directors, all of whom have been appointed since the Omni deal was announced. Jerome Lorrain will serve as executive chairman with Paul Svindland being appointed lead independent director. Lorrain is also a director at supply chain tech company Log-Hub and the executive chairman of routing solutions provider FluentCargo. He previously served as the chief operating officer at CEVA Logistics. Svindland is currently the chairman of STG Logistics. Forward also announced on Thursday that shareholders approved a reincorporation to Delaware. The company had called on shareholders to approve the move given Delaware's favorable corporate governance framework, which may make it easier to sell. 'This vote is a clear mandate that shareholders expect Forward Air to expeditiously complete a credible strategic review that leads to a sale at a meaningful premium,' a Thursday statement from Ancora read. 'Absent the more than 30% of shares that were legally committed to vote for the incumbent Board, Chairman George Mayes, Jr., Javier Polit, and Laurie Tucker lost in a landslide, highlighting the substantial level of concern regarding the legitimacy of the Board's strategic review. We believe the resignations of these legacy directors will empower the Board to carry out a thorough assessment of value-maximizing opportunities.'
