Margao woman loses Rs 2.6 crore in digital arrest, Kerala man held
Panaji: Goa police on Friday arrested a Kerala native Rijas K for his role in an alleged high-value cyber fraud case amounting to over Rs 2.6 crore. SP (Crime branch) Rahul Gupta said that the Cyber Crime police station registered a first information report (FIR) based on a complaint from a Margao woman. According to the complaint, the victim received multiple phone calls and WhatsApp messages from individuals impersonating senior officials from the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), Mumbai. 'Using mobile number +91 90xxx85182 and WhatsApp numbers +91 967xxx2769 and +91 814xxx0910, the accused falsely informed the complainant that a police complaint was registered against her name and Aadhaar number,' Gupta said. 'The fraudsters further sent a forged Supreme Court order and coerced the complainant into transferring a total of Rs 2.6 crore into various bank accounts.' During the investigation, it was found that an amount of over Rs 76 lakh was credited on May 22, in two separate transactions to a bank account, which was identified to be in the name of one Rijas K, a resident of Kozhikode, Kerala, the SP said. A team from the Cyber Crime police station proceeded to Kozhikode. 'With the assistance of local police, Rijas K (age 35 years) was apprehended and placed under arrest,' he said. During custodial interrogation, it was revealed that the accused is a habitual cyber fraudster and is involved in at least 11 cybercrimes across India, with the total fraud amount estimated to be around Rs 22 crore.

India's Telecom Subscriber Base Crosses 1.2 Billion Mark: TRAI
New Delhi: India's telecom sector continues to show growth, with the total number of telephone subscribers crossing the 1.2 billion mark, according to the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) on Thursday. The total subscriber base increased from 1,189.92 million in December 2024 to 1,200.80 million in March 2025. Tele-density also rose during the quarter -- reflecting better connectivity across urban and rural areas. Urban subscribers grew to 666.11 million, while rural subscribers touched 534.69 million. This growth led to an increase in rural tele-density, indicating deeper digital reach in remote regions. The share of rural subscriptions also rose from 44.31 per cent at the end of December 2024 to 44.53 per cent at the end of March 2025. Wireless subscriptions witnessed significant growth, with more than 13 million new connections added during the quarter ending March 31. The combined mobile and 5G FWA user base reached 1,163.76 million, while traditional mobile connections alone rose to 1,156.99 million. This suggests growing interest in mobile services across consumer segments. India's broadband internet landscape remains robust, with over 944 million subscribers. This reflects India's continued dominance as one of the world's largest internet user bases, even as new technologies shape the way people connect. The sector also saw an improvement in financial performance. Gross Revenue (GR) for the quarter stood at Rs 98,250 crore, with Adjusted Gross Revenue (AGR) touching Rs 79,226 crore. License fee collections also grew, underlining the strong demand for telecom services. Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for wireless services rose to Rs 182.95, with prepaid users contributing Rs 182.53 and postpaid users averaging Rs 187.48 per month. User engagement remained high, as average minutes of usage per month increased to 1,026 -- showing higher interaction with telecom services for voice, data, and content. The broadcasting sector remained stable, with 333 satellite pay TV channels reported out of 908 permitted channels, including 101 HD channels. The Pay DTH segment recorded an active user base of 56.92 million, offering a wide range of content alongside Doordarshan's free services.

Telecom wireless ARPU rises 0.64% to Rs 182.95 in March quarter: TRAI
New Delhi [India], June 19 (ANI): The Monthly Average Revenue per User (ARPU) of telecom players, a metric represents the average revenue a business generates from each of its users, for wireless service increased by 0.64 per cent, from Rs 181.80 in December 2024 to Rs 182.95 in quarter ending March current year, according to the data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI). As per the report, on a Y-O-Y basis, monthly ARPU for wireless service increased by 19.16 per cent in this quarter. The ARPU per month for the prepaid segment is Rs 182.53, and the ARPU per month for the postpaid segment is Rs 187.48 for QE March of the current year, the data shows. Telecom operators have seen a rise in ARPU following the recent tariff hikes. On an all-India average, the overall Minutes Of Usage (MOU) per month increased by 1.64 per cent from 1009 in QE Dec 2024 to 1026 in QE Mar 2025, the quarterly data shows. The data shows that India's internet subscribers dipped marginally from 970.16 million at the end of December 2024 to 969.10 million at the end of the March quarter, registering a quarterly rate of decline of 0.11 per cent, According to the TRAI's 'Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report', the internet subscriber base is comprised of a Broadband Internet subscriber base of 944.12 million and a Narrowband Internet subscriber base of 24.98 million. The quarterly data shows that the broadband Internet subscriber base decreased by 0.09 per cent from 944.96 million at the end of Dec-24 to 944.12 million at the end of Mar-25. The narrowband Internet subscriber base decreased from 25.20 million at the end of Dec-24 to 24.98 million at the end of March. The quarterly data shows that wireline subscribers decreased from 39.27 million at the end of Dec-24 to 37.04 million at the end of Mar-25, with a quarterly rate of decline of 5.67 per cent. The telecom regulator said that the decrease is due to the accounting of 5G Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) subscribers in the wireless category. On a Y-O-Y basis, wireline subscriptions increased by 9.62 per cent at the end of QE Mar-25, the data shows. Further, the data shows that the wireline tele density decreased from 2.79 per cent at the end of December of 2024 to 2.62 per cent at the end of March 2025, with a quarterly rate of decline of 5.88 per cent. Indian pay DTH sees 1.3 mn subs drop in Jan-March'25: TRAI
India's pay Direct-to-Home (DTH) sector shed approximately 1.3 million active subscribers in the first quarter of 2025. The total active subscriber base dropped to 56.92 million at the end of March 31, 2025, a decrease from 58.22 million recorded at the end of December 2024, according to the Indian Telecom Services Performance Indicator Report for Jan-March 2025 by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India ( TRAI ). The reported figures are in addition to the subscribers of DD Free Dish, the free DTH service offered by Doordarshan. The shrinking subscriber base for pay DTH services highlights an ongoing trend, as earlier reports from TRAI indicate a consistent decline over recent quarters: March 31, 2024 at 61.97 million, June 30, 2024 at 62.17 million, September 30, 2024 at 59.91 million, December 31, 2024 at 58.22 million, and March 31, 2025 at 56.92 million. Regarding market share, Tata Play remained the dominant player, though its share slightly decreased from 31.49 percent in the quarter ending December 2024 to 31.42 percent by March 2025. Bharti Telemedia maintained its position as the second largest operator, holding a consistent 30.20 percent share in both quarters. Sun Direct TV and Dish TV also saw no change in their reported market shares between December 2024 and March 2025, remaining at 19.32 percent and 19.06 percent respectively. The report also indicated that there are 844 MSOs and 1 HITS operator registered with MIB as on September 30, 2024. As per the data reported by MSOs and HITS operator, as on December 31, 2024, there are 11 MSOs & 1 HITS operator who have subscriber base greater than one million. GTPL Hathway, Hathway Digital and Siti Networks were the top three operators for the quarter.
