Punjab tehsils on way to becoming graft-free: CM Bhagwant Mann
Dedicating a tehsil complex constructed at a cost of Rs 10.80 crore in Patiala's Dudhan Sadhan, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann Monday said all tehsil and sub-tehsil complexes in Punjab were heading towards becoming corruption free due to strenuous efforts of his government. 'Earlier, revenue officers used to think that they had the right to loot people through corruption, and they even threatened to disrupt the work if any action was taken against them. However, the AAP government launched a major crackdown against corrupt practices, and the result is that all tehsils and sub-tehsils complexes across Punjab are heading towards becoming corruption-free,' the CM said. The building will house the offices of SDM, Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar and others. Mann said, 'Dudhan Sadhan is primarily a rural area. Earlier, the SDM's office was situated at the Mini Secretariat in Patiala, due to which people had to suffer a lot to get their routine administrative work done. To facilitate the general public, the state government has decided to construct this complex here only. It is a matter of immense pride and satisfaction that such modern tehsil complexes are being built across the state to facilitate the people. ' The CM said the foundation stone of the project was laid in January 2023 and it was completed in a record time span. 'This project will immensely benefit the masses by delivering them citizen-centric services in a time-bound manner. It will facilitate the people in providing the services at their vicinity, saving their time, money and energy.' Mann said the previous regimes had never paid any heed towards such initiatives to serve the people in a better manner. 'Earlier, the reins of the state were in the wrong hands, due to which the state suffered adversely. Ever since assuming the charge of office, the AAP government has been giving top priority to such works of immense public importance. Such buildings are being constructed while keeping in view the future needs of the people,' Mann added. Equating corruption with cancer, the CM said, 'Stern action is the only form of chemotherapy which can remove this cancer in tehsil offices. Revenue officers used to harass the common man on the pretext of mass leaves or strikes, but the state government has not bowed before these corrupt officers.' Emphasising that the AAP is an outcome of the anti-corruption movement, Mann said they made concerted efforts to make Punjab free from corruption. To check corruption, the state government introduced an easy registration initiative for land deeds, which promotes self-reliance, reduces dependency on private deed writers, and empowers citizens to handle their transactions independently. Mann said Akali leaders reduced the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) to a mere 'Shiromani Golak Parbandhak Committee' out of their 'greed for money'. 'The Badals misused their political power to interfere in religious affairs, including manipulating appointments of Jathedars of the Akal Takht to suit their personal interests,' the CM alleged.

HC temporarily restrains demolition 220 families' residences in Malegaon fort
MUMBAI: In a reprieve for 220 families residing in the Bhuikot Killa, the Malegaon fort, the Bombay high court on Friday restrained the revenue department from acting on demolition notices issued. The vacation bench of justice Gauri Godse and justice Somasekhar Sundaresan was hearing a petition filed by resident Mohammad Rajjab Khan, and other residents of the fort. According to the petition, the tourism and cultural affairs department of the state government issued a Government Resolution (GR) on January 20, instructing district collectors to remove all encroachments from the 47 forts protected by the Central Government and 62 forts protected by the archaeology department as per the Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Rules, 1969. Following the GR, the Malegaon tehsildar issued eviction and demolition notices to the residents of the fort in March and April 2025, prompting them to approach the high court. Residents contended that they have been residing in the structures for 40 years and have necessary documents like electricity bills, house tax, water tax bills, ration cards etc. They added that an educational institute is running a school and a junior college at the fort's centre, and a separate girls' school is also located within the fort premises. These schools are using the open space in the fort as their playground. Demolition notices were issued to individual residents only, not these establishments, said the petitioners. Advocate Manisha Desai said a regular bench on May 8 granted protection to some residents after noting that schools and a gymkhana were functioning out of the fort area. The petitioner also claimed that the authorities turned a blind eye to several unauthorised structures within the fort and are selectively targeting the residents of the surrounding localities, falling outside the fort precinct. Desai also pointed out that the tehsildar passed fresh orders on May 26 for eviction and demolition of the residential structures. However, these were not served to the petitioners. Against this backdrop, the vacation bench restrained the revenue authorities from taking any coercive steps against the petitioners' structures. It also directed the additional government pleader Kavita N Solunke to take instruction as to whether the Tehsildar had passed any fresh orders for eviction and demolition and to file affidavits in reply to the petitions by June 10, when the petitions would come up for further hearing.

2 detained in Maharashtra after nearly Rs 2 crore in cash found in car
Two people were detained in Maharashtra's Buldhana district after Rs 1.97 crore in cash was found in the car they were travelling in, police incident came to light on Friday when Malkapur police station inspector Ganesh Giri received a tip-off that a silver Ertiga car was headed to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar and the vehicle had a large amount of police officer immediately informed his senior officers about this and blocked the road leading to Sambhaji Nagar. The car was stopped at a 'nakabandi' (road block for checking) in Malkapur. But since the place was crowded, the car was taken to the police station where the vehicle was searched under the supervision of Tehsildar, Naib Tehsildar and others. A machine was used to count the cash recovered in the car, which totalled Rs 1.97 crore. The Income Tax Department in Nagpur was informed about the seizure through a letter as per protocol."The car was on its way to Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The two persons in the car could not give satisfactory answers about the money, following which they were detained. Further probe is underway," Giri was quoted by saying by news agency said the Akola Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) had been informed about the cash seizure and the detainees.(with inputs from Zaka Khan and PTI) IN THIS STORY#Maharashtra

Locals in Parvathipuram Manyam district demand long-pending bridge completion, massive protest on May 26
Visakhapatnam: Upset over the inordinate delay in completion of the much-needed Purnapadu-Labesu bridge over the Nagavali river in Komarada mandal , Parvathipuram Manyam district, hundreds of locals decided to launch a protest in front of the Tehsildar office in Komarada on May 26, demanding completion of the bridge. It may be noted that the works for Purnapadu-Labesu bridge, which connects over 60 villages to Komarada headquarters in Manyam district, has remained incomplete for over a decade. The bridge construction works had commenced over 15 years ago. The works have not been completed to date. Hence, commuting to schools, hospitals and nearby markets during the rainy season becomes difficult for people residing under Komarada mandal. Expressing frustration over the situation, locals said that their daily commutes were disrupted by muddy roads and overflowing streams. Children in the locality often miss their school, and it is difficult to transport patients medical facilities. Andhra Pradesh govt had sanctioned the bridge in 2006 at an estimated cost of Rs 3.5 crore. However, the construction stalled due to various reasons. After the division of AP in 2014, the TDP govt, led by chief minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu, escalated the bridge estimate to Rs 7 crore and restarted the works when Kurupam MLA Pushpa Srivani undertook a protest in 2016. However, after around 50% completion, the works came to a halt once again. Deploring the inordinate delay in completion of the bridge, locals formed Purnapadu-Labesu Vanthena Sadhana Samiti and intensified their protests demanding completion of the bridge. K Samba Murthy, leader of the Samiti, stated that the successive govts have failed to complete the bridge. Many tribals have lost their lives while crossing the river, especially during the rainy season.

Tourists flock to Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani to soak in the Maharashtra Tourism Festival
1 2 Kolhapur: Maharashtra Tourism Festival is attracting visitors in large numbers to the twin hill stations of Mahabaleshwar and Panchgani with several events and activities lined up. The festival was inaugurated on Friday. On Saturday, the second day of the festival, tourism minister Shambhuraj Desai inaugurated 'Carnival Parade' from Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk to Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Chowk in Mahabaleshwar. MTDC general manager Chandrasekhar Jaiswal, senior regional manager Hanumant Hede, Wai provincial officer Rajendra Kachare, regional manager Deepak Harne, Mahabaleshwar Tehsildar Tejaswini Patil and CO Yogesh Patil were present. Besides, a fun run, cyclothon, helicopter ride, farm visit, floating market, temple visit, carnival procession, display of forts and ammunition, cultural event, laser show, helicopter ride,and other events were also organised. Renowned flutist Amar Oak presented Morning Ragaaz leaving tourists and local citizens spellbound. People were seen hopping around the hill stations, making the most of the festival. Sumit Oswal, a tourist at Tent City from Pimpri-Chinchwad, said, "Visit to Tent City gave the Run of Kacch vibes. It was a great experience witnessing the colourful procession, exhibition of forts, floating market, and laser show. If we knew there was so much to witness, I would have planned my stay for all three days here. It was a great experience for me and my family on Saturday." The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation (MTDC) has organised a three-day Maharashtra Tourism Festival to promote the state's tourist destination at both national and international levels. Another tourist, Sumedha Kulkarni from Baramati, said, "Visiting Mahabaleshwar has always been special, and this time with the Maharashtra Tourism Festival, our journey became a lot more memorable. So much to do and so little time is what I can say about this festival. At a few places, we faced traffic congestion. On Sunday, more tourists will arrive, and the administration needs to plan accordingly." The festival includes cultural programs by various renowned artists, forts and vintage ammunition exhibition, food festival, adventure sports activities, children's workshops, helicopter rides, drone shows, food stalls, flea market, visits to temples and other tourist spots, photography workshops, floating market at Venna Lake, laser show, yoga session and morning ragas - instrumental music, fun runs and cyclothon, lectures regarding opportunities in water tourism, biodynamic farming, Tourism Policy of Maharashtra, Carnival Parade, Fun Street, Boat exhibition, etc. The festival will conclude on Sunday.
