2026 Winter Olympics: Arturs Silovs, Teddy Blueger named to Latvia's preliminary roster

Article content Silovs made 51 saves Friday in a 4-3 double-overtime victory in Charlotte in the series opener. On Sunday, he kept the Canucks in striking distance with 39 saves in a 3-2 overtime setback. He leads all playoff goalies in wins (13), shutouts (5), and is tops among those with at least 10 playoffs games in saves percentage (. 930) and is second in goals-against average (1.99). All this hasn't gone unnoticed. On Monday, Silovs and Vancouver Canucks centre Teddy Blueger were two of six players named to Latvia's preliminary roster for the 2026 Winter Olympics. Silovs, 24, is no stranger to the big stage and the spotlight. He backstopped his native country to world championship bronze on home soil in 2023. He posted a 7-2-0 record, 2.20 GAA., and .921 save percentage to earn MVP honours. It's the kind of confidence you can't manufacture. It even includes a little swagger. 'There was always a thought we could win against Canada in the semifinals,' he told Postmedia. 'We could have played in the final, and who knows, maybe win? It was great, but I always have that thing where I think I could have played a little bit better. A goal or situation you could have handled better.' Silovs took that confidence into the 2024 Stanley Cup playoffs and his 1-0 shutout of the Nashville Predators propelled the Canucks into the second round against the Edmonton Oilers. Silovs then made 43 saves in a 4-3 win at Edmonton in Game 3.

The Canucks are projected to finish with around 90 points, which would be five points below the playoff bar. As of 3:55 pm PT on Sunday, the St. Louis Blues and Minnesota Wild are projected to secure Wild Card spots, while the Pacific Division will be made up of the Vegas Golden Knights, L.A. Kings and Edmonton Oilers. Advertisement While the regulation loss to Winnipeg did not eliminate the Canucks, it means Vancouver will need to go on a long run to end the season. The Canucks have eight games remaining, and may need to win at least seven to qualify for the playoffs. This is in large part due to the recent play of the Blues, who have won nine straight and currently have a six-point advantage over Vancouver. The Canucks return home from their road trip on Wednesday to face the Seattle Kraken. Seattle has already been eliminated from playoff contention and will be looking to put another massive dent in Vancouver's 2025 Stanley Cup Playoffs hopes. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 pm PT from Rogers Arena.
