FRIM enhances efforts to commercialise forest resource-based research innovations
KUALA LUMPUR: The Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM) continues to strengthen its role in the development of forest resource-based technology and innovation through the comprehensive execution of research, development, commercialisation, and application (RDCA) activities. FRIM said the initiative represents a strategic effort by the institute to support Malaysia's aspiration of becoming a high-tech nation by the year 2030. 'In line with the Forestry Research Institute Malaysia Act 2016 and the National Research, Development, Innovation, Commercialisation and Economic (RDICE) Roadmap, FRIM plays a key role within the national innovation ecosystem by fostering collaboration between the research sector, industry, and government. 'This effort is guided by the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) 2021-2030, which aims to achieve research and innovation investments totaling RM85.7 billion,' FRIM said in a statement. It added that it plays a crucial role in bridging the gap between research laboratories and the market by actively participating in national initiatives such as Malaysia Commercialisation Year and working closely with the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI). According to FRIM, several approaches have been implemented to drive innovation, including the provision of technology packages, product certification, technical advisory services, and incubation activities through its Innovation and Commercialisation Division. 'FRIM's intellectual property is managed through the Technology Information Management System (TIMS), ensuring that innovation outputs are well-protected and ready for commercialisation. These efforts are further supported by its wholly owned subsidiary, FRIM Incorporated Sdn Bhd, which plays a pivotal role in facilitating technology licensing and translating research outcomes to meet market demands,' it said. 'Among FRIM's key achievements is the successful commercialisation of clones and extracts from local herbs such as Kacip Fatimah (Labisia pumila) and Cucur Atap (Baeckea frutescens) which are now incorporated into natural wellness products with strong potential to enter international markets. The institute also provides consultancy and technology transfer services to both government agencies and the private sector. These services encompass a wide range of areas, including biomass product development, plantation silviculture, eco-friendly product certification, and biodiversity mapping. In addition, FRIM offers expertise in the development of nature trails and ecotourism projects, contributing to efforts in environmental sustainability. 'Through strategic collaborations with various local and international organisations, FRIM is also actively involved in implementing greening initiatives aimed at preserving biodiversity and raising public awareness on the importance of reforestation,' it added. FRIM stressed that the success in creating both commercial and social value from research outcomes underscores how forest resource-based scientific innovation can significantly contribute to national economic development. In line with this, FRIM remains committed to leading the development of an inclusive, innovative, and sustainable forest-based industry for the benefit of the nation.

'If we're serious about becoming a high-tech nation, we must dare to innovate, create and test new ideas in real-world settings,' he said in a Facebook post tonight. Describing NTIS as an 'innovation accelerator', Chang said the initiative offers researchers, start-ups and tech entrepreneurs a space to trial ideas with flexible regulatory backing. 'It's not just a testing ground. It is a space that believes in local talent, where there's room to fail, learn and return with better solutions,' he said. He added that each innovation tested under NTIS takes Malaysia a step closer to building a more mature innovation ecosystem, one where ideas are not just conceived, but refined and brought to market. Chang also noted that the programme is a core part of the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (DSTIN) 2021–2030 and aligns with the Malaysia MADANI agenda, which sees innovation as grounded not just in technology, but in values like trust and opportunity. 'With NTIS, we open the path. Those who dare to try, we give space. Those who succeed, we support all the way to market. That's how we build the future,' he said.

Mosti eyeing 300,000 participants for 2025 National Science Week
Chang performs the launch gimmick for National Science Week 2025, as other distinguished guests look on. — Photo by Jude Toyat KOTA SAMARAHAN (May 6): The Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti) is targeting around 300,000 participants for the 2025 National Science Week (MSN), which kicked off at Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Samarahan Campus here on Sunday, and will run until the end of this year. According to the minister Chang Lih Kang, the programme reflects the government's ongoing commitment to fostering a culture of Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) among Malaysians, in line with the National Science, Technology and Innovation Policy (NSTIP) 2021-2030. 'Although it is called 'National Science Week', the initiative will actually span until the end of the year and over the next few months, we will be visiting at least six states. 'During this period, we will also bring science exhibitions to rural and remote areas in Borneo through the Kembara Sains Borneo initiative. 'We are targeting around 300,000 participants this year through more than 50 exciting and meaningful activities that are planned to ensure the programme remains impactful, relevant, and inclusive for all target groups,' he told reporters when met after the launch. Earlier, in his opening speech, Chang expressed gratitude for the opportunity to launch the programme, brought by Mosti through the National Science Centre (NSC), in Sarawak and acknowledged the strong partnerships that had made it possible. In this regard, he extended his appreciation to the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Talent Development Sarawak (MEITD) as the implementing partner, and also to the Yayasan Mr D.I.Y. as the official sponsor. He also expressed appreciation to the Ministry of Education (MoE), the Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE), departments and agencies under Mosti, as well as the Sarawak government agencies that had contributed to the success of the programme. He emphasised that this year marks the eighth edition of the MSN, since its inception in 2018. 'This effort reflects Mosti's commitment to cultivating the culture of science, technology and innovation in the lives of Malaysians in a consistent and continuous manner.' According to Chang, this programme supports the Malaysia Madani vision, particularly the 'Creative Power' pillar, which promotes national readiness through the adoption of technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, automation, and Big Data. Also present were Deputy Science, Technology and Innovation Minister Datuk Mohammad Yusof Apdal; acting permanent secretary of the MEITD, Husini Bakir; UiTM Sarawak rector Prof Dr Firdaus Abdullah; and National Science Centre director Mohammad Fuad Rahman.
