Taylor Swift Might Be Going From Pop Queen to Silver Screen With This Iconic Reboot
Hollywood loves a remake and the latest film to get that reboot treatment is a classic that probably doesn't need a new interpretation, but it's getting one. The 1992 movie, The Bodyguard, starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner, is being reimagined, per Deadline. The cast has not been announced, but a super-famous name bubbled up immediately on the internet: Taylor Swift. When Houston filmed the movie, she was the biggest pop star of the moment and the same could be said of Swift right now. So, it's understandable that Hollywood would think she was perfect for the role. But there's another reason why Swift's name swirling about and it has to do with her connections to the people working on the project. More from SheKnows Eagle-Eyed Fans Noticed How Donna Kelce May Feel About Travis Kelce & Taylor Swift Being Parents Sam Wrench, who directed Swift's concert film, Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, is set to helm The Bodyguard revamp. It makes her casting feel like a natural fit even though the casting process isn't underway yet. The duo also made magic at the box office in 2023, earning $261.7 million worldwide. If you're not familiar with the original film, the storyline follows a former U.S. Secret Service agent, played by Costner, who becomes a bodyguard. He is hired to protect a famous actress and singer, played by Houston, who is being harassed by an unknown stalker. Amid the drama, the duo's undeniable chemistry takes over. While Swift is the hot name of the moment to play Houston role, there was a rumor in 2023 that a royal family member might play the part. Meghan Markle, who retired from acting in 2017 after getting engaged to Prince Harry, somehow found herself in the mix of The Bodyguard 2 with Costner. 'The only thing Kevin loves more than an underdog like Meghan is a box office hit,' a source told New Idea magazine, via the Express. The rumor wasn't that far-fetched considering Costner wanted Princess Diana to star in a follow-up film with him back in the '90s. 'I said, 'Look, I'm going to do Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build this around you. Would you be interested?'' he recalled on The Howard Stern Show in 2024. 'And she said … she goes, 'Yes.'' He reportedly had those conversations with the Princess of Wales in 1996 around the time her divorce from Prince Charles was about to be finalized. 'She goes, 'My life's about to change,'' Costner told Stern of their conversation. 'She said, 'Is there going to be a kissing scene?' And I said, 'Do you want there to be one?' And she said, 'Yeah.' And I said, 'Then we'll do that.'' Princess Diana died a year later in a devastating car crash on Aug. 31, 1997, and Costner decided not to move forward with the project because he 'could not replace Princess Di.' Warner Bros. Wins Dismissal of ‘Superman' Foreign Copyright Suit
A judge has thrown out a lawsuit challenging Warner Bros.' copyright to 'Superman' in 10 countries, finding that the federal courts have no jurisdiction over the dispute. Mark Peary, the nephew of late 'Superman' co-creator Joe Shuster, sued the studio and its DC Comics subsidiary in January, arguing that Shuster's estate had a right to cancel 'Superman' copyrights in the United Kingdom, Canada, Ireland, and other territories. More from Variety Superman and Krypto the Dog Get Funko Popped Ahead of James Gunn Film 'The Bodyguard' Remake From 'Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour' Director Sam Wrench Set at Warner Bros. Box Office: 'A Minecraft Movie' Builds Big With $58 Million Opening Day - Largest of 2025 In a ruling on Thursday, U.S. District Judge Jesse Furman held that the court has no authority to address the estate's rights under foreign laws. 'The Court concludes that it lacks subject-matter jurisdiction over this case; the case therefore must be and is dismissed,' Furman wrote. Undeterred, Peary filed a nearly identical lawsuit on Friday morning in state court in New York. The state suit seeks an injunction that could, in theory, interfere with the July 11 release of 'Superman,' the franchise reboot directed by James Gunn and starring David Corenswet. Peary's lawyer, Marc Toberoff, previously sought a federal injunction that would block the film's release in the U.K., Canada, Australia and Ireland unless the Shuster estate were compensated. In throwing out the federal lawsuit, Furman also denied the injunction as moot. The 'Superman' copyright has been the subject of decades of litigation, ever since Shuster and Jerome Siegel created the character and sold it for $130 in 1938. In 2013, the 9th Circuit Court of Appeal rejected the Shuster estate's claims, finding that Shuster's sister had signed away all rights after Shuster's death in 1992. Toberoff argued that the 9th Circuit opinion settled the matter with regard to U.S. copyright law, but left the estate's overseas interests unresolved. He argued that under British law, the estate had a right to terminate the copyright in 2017, 25 years after Shuster's death. Toberoff argued that U.S. courts have authority under the Berne Convention, the international copyright treaty, to enforce overseas copyrights. Warner Bros.' attorneys countered that the Berne Convention is unenforceable in federal court. Toberoff has not sought to bring copyright suits in the U.K. or the other territories, which would present various inconveniences. The studio attorneys also argued that the 'Superman' copyright issue has been exhaustively litigated and resolved. The character is due to enter the public domain in 2034. Could Taylor Swift Star in Beloved Whitney Houston Movie Remake?
A major movie remake of a beloved classic film could have interesting casting. Although casting is not set, a key staffing move is getting Taylor Swift's name mentioned in connection with the project. The movie is The Bodyguard, which was a romantic thriller that starred Kevin Costner and Whitney Houston in 1992. Costner played the bodyguard of Houston, a singer. The role would seem to be tailor-made for a singer like Swift. "Beyond Swift, there are many singers who could play the singing star that this should be a magnet for an exciting cast," Deadline noted, however. Now Sam Wrench, who is the director of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour, has been chosen to direct a remake of The Bodyguard. The script is being written by Jonathan A. Abrams, who wrote the movie Juror No. 2, according to Deadline. According to Deadline, the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie that Wrench directed was a "concert movie spawned from Swift's historic almost two-year-long global tour." The movie "grossed $261.7 million worldwide," Deadline reported. Variety noted that the original Bodyguard movie "has what is considered the bestselling movie soundtrack of all time, with several chart-topping original songs from Houston," who was at the height of her fame when she filmed it. "I don't think the job of a concert filmmaker is there to try and portray something that didn't happen or to give it an energy that isn't there," Wrench told Variety. "When the music is the king, the music is the thing you follow and you let that kind of dictate everything. But honestly, my job was fairly easy. It's such a great concert. Everyone enjoyed it. We pointed some cameras, and here we are," he added. The original Bodyguard also received two Oscar nominations for songs, according to Variety.
