Former Knicks assistant unlikely to become next head coach

As the New York Knicks continue their search for a new head coach, their options have become clearer. So far, they have formally interviewed both Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown while also expressing interest in other candidates. Johnnie Bryant is unlikely to become the next Knicks head coach However, one potential candidate seems to be essentially ruled out. According to SNY's Ian Begley, it is not likely that former Knicks associate head coach and current Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant will become the next head coach for New York. Johnnie Bryant, New York Knicks 'I just heard last week that with Johnnie it was more of a longer shot there,' Begley said. 'When you talk about the coaches who have been in, or will be in, for interviews, I think those are the guys that have much higher odds at landing this thing than Johnnie Bryant.' Advertisement Bryant was heavily rumored as a candidate shortly after Tom Thibodeau was fired, thanks to his ties with the organization. Bryant was the Knicks' associate head coach under Thibodeau from 2020-24 and held the same role under Kenny Atkinson with the Cavaliers this past season. They are coming off their best season in over 25 years and are ready to take the next step towards becoming a championship team. While it is not completely ruled out that Bryant will become the next head coach, it is highly unlikely that they will turn to him unless the options become thin. Advertisement Related Headlines

Sources: Why Knicks remain in pursuit of Jason Kidd amid Mavericks contract talks

The post Sources: Why Knicks remain in pursuit of Jason Kidd amid Mavericks contract talks appeared first on ClutchPoints. The New York Knicks' head coaching search goes on. The team reportedly had interviews scheduled for this week with former NBA head coaches Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown. They're also still in pursuit of Dallas Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd. What's the latest in their process of finding a coach? Advertisement The Knicks' front office, led by team president Leon Rose, continues to leverage their relationships throughout this search. The team is still gathering information on various candidates. Targets like Kidd and Jenkins have indeed emerged as 'early favorites.' Typically, however, New York performs its organizational due diligence. Here, that means continuing to collect intelligence on top candidates from all over their list as they wait on Kidd and the Mavericks. Some of those coaches have experience at the NBA level, like Kidd himself and Jenkins. Sources familiar with the situation tell ClutchPoints the Knicks are also still looking into, and organizing thoughts on, candidates who coach at the collegiate level. With regard to Kidd and the team's steady interest in him as their potential next head coach, the Mavericks' rejection of the Knicks' request to interview Kidd didn't stop the chase. The 'mutual interest' reported to exist between Kidd and the Knicks was a sign that it wouldn't. Advertisement New York is helping other teams' head coaches get paid by showing public interest in hiring them away. The Chicago Bulls and Billy Donovan agreed to an extension and raise soon after the Knicks requested to interview him. On Thursday, the Houston Rockets and head coach Ime Udoka agreed to a contract extension, too, after being in the same situation. Until Kidd and the Mavericks either reach an agreement on an extension and raise or agree to leave their contract as-is, the proverbial door technically remains open. Sources tell ClutchPoints the Knicks will pursue Kidd until that door is firmly shut. If Kidd and the Mavericks make a final decision to continue their partnership, the Knicks will need to move on. They won't have to conduct much of a 'pivot,' though. They will need to break down and continue to supplement the information they've gathered on other top candidates. Ja Morant Sends Cryptic Message After Grizzlies Trade

Ja Morant Sends Cryptic Message After Grizzlies Trade originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Memphis Grizzlies' 2024-2025 season ended on a sour note, with the team failing to meet playoff expectations sparking significant changes within the organization. The franchise made a bold move by parting ways with longtime head coach Taylor Jenkins with nine games remaining after slipping in the Western Conference from the second seed to the play-in tournament. Advertisement In a further shakeup, the team recently executed a blockbuster trade by sending Desmond Bane to the Orlando Magic. This move, which reallocated key assets in return for multiple first-round draft picks and additional roster pieces, hinted at a potential rebuild while leaving fans and analysts questioning the future core of the squad. Following the Bane trade, trade rumors have quickly shifted focus to star guard Ja Morant, as his future has become a major talking point across media outlets and among insiders. Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant (12)Getty Images In his latest post, the 25-year-old guard sent a cryptic message on social media, citing lyrics from Rod Wave's song 'Moving On.' Advertisement 'don't cry for me when the war is over' Morant has spent the entirety of his six-year career with the Grizzlies, leading them to multiple playoff appearances. During the 2024–25 season, he averaged 23.2 points, 7.3 assists, and 4.1 rebounds per game while shooting 45.4 percent from the field over 50 games. Since being selected as the second overall pick in the 2019 NBA draft out of Murray State, Morant has amassed an impressive list of achievements, including NBA Rookie of the Year in 2020 and multiple All-Star game selections. This story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jun 18, 2025, where it first appeared.

DraftKings has landed on the former Sacramento Kings' Coach of the Year as the next Knicks' coach. Mike Brown is favored to be the franchise's next leader, coming in at +125 odds. The odds imply a 44.44 percent chance that the Knicks hire Brown, who was dismissed by Sacramento during the regular season. Though the Mavericks denied the Knicks permission to speak with their head coach, Jason Kidd, the door isn't completely closed on the Hall of Famer returning to the Garden after finishing his playing career there, The Post's Stefan Bondy reported. Despite that intel, DraftKings does not have odds for Kidd. Kidd, who could use the Knicks' interest to get a contract extension from the Mavs, was previously listed as a -180 favorite by DraftKings, but his absence from the list is a bit puzzling considering it's been widely reported that the deal for him is not dead. Knicks head coaching search, free-agent targets, trades and more: Mailbag

The New York Knicks always make things interesting, eh? Two weeks into its search for a new head coach, New York will interview leading candidates Taylor Jenkins and Mike Brown, The Athletic first reported last week. Once that's settled, the franchise will shift to the NBA Draft and then free agency, with trades possibly intertwined with all of the chaos. Advertisement The Knicks' offseason has already been entertaining, and it could get wilder within the next month or so. To talk about what has happened so far and what's to come, The Athletic's Knicks beat writer James L. Edwards III is answering fan questions. Let's get into it. Of all the coaches who are reportedly connected with the Knicks hiring search, who has the best fit with the current roster in terms of their philosophy & schemes? — @ For me, it's Mike Brown. He crafted some intricate and fun offenses over his time in Sacramento, and while personnel plays a part in that, I do think he's learned enough along the way to adjust to a different roster with the Knicks. The most important thing New York should be looking for is someone who can maximize this offense. Yes, the Knicks finished the regular season with the fifth-best offense in basketball, but that offense ranked 16th in the NBA from Jan. 1 to the end of the regular season (it should be remembered that Jalen Brunson missed most of March with an injury). Too often, this group was stagnant and predictable. There needs to be a little more juice offensively going forward. We knew the defense was going to rank in the middle of the pack at best. That's just due to the makeup of the roster. The offense, given all the talent in the starting group, should consistently be a nightmare for defenses. It just wasn't. With their defensive limitations, the Knicks need to make sure the offense is humming more often than not. Brown is the best candidate, in my opinion, to maximize this offense and help usher in different looks. What free agents are the Knicks targeting this offseason? — @TheKnicksRecap Unfortunately, I'm not privy to their wishlist, and New York doesn't have big money to go out and round out its roster — the franchise will likely have the $5.7 million taxpayer midlevel exception to use before rounding out the roster with minimum deals. However, there are a couple of names I think the Knicks should consider and have had rumblings about considering. Advertisement The first one is Luke Kennard. The soon-to-be 29-year-old is one of the best shooters in basketball and also sneakily could be a secondary or tertiary ballhandler for New York, which desperately needs that skill set on its roster. Over the last five seasons, Kennard has made at least 43 percent of his 3s while also attempting at least four per game. He's a sniper. Plain and simple. Now, it's likely the Knicks' taxpayer midlevel exception might not be enough to get Kennard. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if he's offered more than $5.7 million annually from another team. However, he is a CAA client, so maybe New York and its CAA army works some magic. A couple of other names to consider with the taxpayer midlevel exception are Spencer Dinwiddie, Trey Lyles and Al Horford. As for minimum players, I wouldn't be shocked if the Knicks brought back Delon Wright and/or Landry Shamet. How much of the coaching change can be attributed to 1) owner, 2) GM, 3) players? — @epconde I hate to give a cop-out answer here, but it's all of the above. The owner wanted it to happen. The front office was fine with it happening. And, very clearly, not all of the players were strongly in support of Tom Thibodeau. The sense I've gotten is that this was weeks, maybe months, in the making. That was made obvious by the fact Thibodeau was fired after the team lost in Game 6 of the Eastern Conference finals, a benchmark the franchise hasn't reached in 25 years. A decision like this isn't made in the aftermath of a notable accomplishment. It was clear that decision-makers were just waiting for the season to end. What percentage chance would you give one of the 'usual starters' not being on the Knicks on opening night? — @ls87NY I think there's a 40 percent chance one of the 'usual starters' isn't on the roster opening night. Advertisement Honestly, now that I type it out, that might be a little high, but let me explain myself. Brunson is safe. We know that. I also think Josh Hart will be around. He is a good player who doesn't make too much money (relative to the other guys in the starting unit) and is best friends with Brunson. Never say never, but I'd be surprised if Hart isn't on the team next season, assuming he still wants to be here. There has been no indication whatsoever that he doesn't want to be. That takes me to Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Karl-Anthony Towns. Bridges will be eligible to sign a four-year, $156 million extension this offseason. He's a good player despite having a rocky first season with the Knicks, and there's definitely a world where New York wants him to take less. Conversely, there's a world where Bridges doesn't take less. Furthermore, it's very reasonable to assume that Bridges, who is always healthy, might want to play out next year without signing an extension and try to get a deal similar to the one Anunoby received (five years, $212.5 million). Bridges is asked to do a lot defensively, doesn't miss games and moves the needle on offense as a third option. So, I don't think it's impossible for him to get traded if the two sides are off on extension talks. The Knicks under Leon Rose have already shown they trade players they are far off on extension talks with. GO DEEPER Do the Knicks have a Mikal Bridges dilemma this offseason? As for Anunoby, he might be the player rival teams want most if the Knicks attempt to make a big trade (Brunson is off the table). Also, maybe New York wants to prioritize depth this offseason, and Anunoby could be flipped for a few pieces. That's where I'm at with Towns, as well. Anunoby and Towns are very good players, but both guys have lengthy deals — and have dealt with injuries throughout their careers. If you told me New York might try to get off of one of those, I wouldn't be totally surprised. Advertisement Is this roster 'championship' caliber? And if not, what can they realistically do to make it one? — @jimmyr0se The Knicks were two wins away from the NBA Finals. It's a really, really good roster. Do I think it's a championship-caliber roster? Well, I do … kind of. I do think the Knicks have a good enough roster to capitalize on the normal pitfalls and shortcomings — whether injuries, fatigue, etc. — that pop up and put teams in position to win a title. However, if every team in the league is healthy and humming, I don't think New York ends up in the finals. That's not a realistic scenario, though. Ultimately, I just think this roster is missing one too many critical attributes. For starters, it needs another playmaker/ballhandler. Behind Brunson, Hart might be the second-best creator for others on the roster. New York needs a player who can break a defense down off the dribble, facilitate and create easy points for himself or others. That is a glaring weakness on the roster. The great teams have at least two of those guys. The other thing is depth. Say what you want about Thibodeau not wanting to use his bench this season. I get it. However, I also can put myself in his shoes, look down the bench and be like, 'Who am I supposed to play?' Miles McBride and Mitchell Robinson are the best bench players, and the latter missed most of the year. McBride even dealt with multiple injuries during the season. After those two, Thibodeau was looking at career journeymen who have routinely been inconsistent throughout their careers and late-round draft picks who probably weren't ready for significant minutes on a team trying to finish top three in the East. Oklahoma City and Indiana have multiple players who can break down defenders and get into the paint, as well as depth. The Boston Celtics, last year's champions, had both. There's no way New York's decision-makers look in the mirror and believe that just changing the coach will get this roster over the top. I don't believe that. The Knicks need to address at least one of these two things to get to where they want to go. (Photo of Mike Brown: Sarah Stier / Getty Images)
