With Razarudin set to retire, who are the frontrunners to succeed him as IGP?
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Incumbent Inspector-General of Police (IGP) Tan Sri Razarudin Husain is set to retire after serving out of his appointment contract, fuelling speculation as to who will succeed him. As a civil servant, Razarudin was initially slated for mandatory retirement in 2023, but had his tenure extended for two years on a 'contract after retirement' basis. With Razarudin due to step down on June 22, three contenders have emerged at the forefront of the nation's top cop post. Malay Mail takes a look at who these frontrunners are: Tan Sri Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay As the second-in-command, deputy IGP Ayob Khan is widely considered the leading candidate to succeed Razarudin. He started out as an Assistant Superintendent in Bukit Aman's Special Branch in 1993 and worked his way up to become one of its most senior officers, leading the department's counter-terrorism division (E8) in 2016. As E8 principal assistant director, Ayob Khan made a name for himself where he was at the forefront of the hunt for the Islamic State (IS) militants in the country, leading crackdowns on the their domestic activities. In 2019, Ayob Khan also led several operations against individuals suspected of supporting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) — a separatist and terrorist group that had been active in Sri Lanka until its official defeat in 2009. He was later promoted to Johor police chief and became the directors for both Bukit Aman's Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department and Criminal Investigation Department prior to his appointment as deputy IGP. Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim Azmi is currently serving as Bukit Aman's Internal Security and Public Order Department (KDNKA) director after having joined the force in 1987. Prior to his current posting, Azmi also previously served as Petaling Jaya police chief, Kuala Lumpur police chief and later Bukit Aman's Management Department director. He is also currently the chairman of Koperasi Polis Diraja Malaysia Berhad (KPDRM), a cooperative established primarily for the members of the Royal Malaysia Police aimed at providing various financial and social services to its members. Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail As Special Branch director, Mohd Khalid was only recently appointed to lead Bukit Aman's key intelligence agency in 2023. He previously served as a deputy director in the same department. These include his predecessors, namely Tan Sri Mohamad Fuzi Harun and Tan Sri Abdul Hamid Bador who were appointed IGPs, a departure from conventional protocol where the deputy IGP usually takes over.

‘No need for concern': IGP says KL safe, Brickfields and Cheras shootings were targeted, tied to internal disputes
KUALA LUMPUR, June 18 — Malaysia's capital city is very much safe despite two separate shooting cases in Brickfields and Cheras recently, the country's top policeman said today. Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said both incidents were not random public shootings, but believed to have been triggered by disputes between the victims and the gunmen, with specific motives involved, Bernama reported today. 'As stated by Kuala Lumpur Police Chief Datuk Rusdi Mohd Isa, the incidents involved targeted individuals and arose from conflicts that originated outside the capital area,' he was quoted as saying. 'There is no need for public concern, as security around Kuala Lumpur remains under control.' Razarudin added that following the incidents, the Kuala Lumpur police have intensified patrols and operations to ensure continued public order. The first shooting incident occurred last Friday at a restaurant on Jalan Tun Sambanthan in Brickfields. The second incident took place late last night on Jalan Loke Yew in Cheras. Rusdi reportedly said that the cases are believed to be connected to smuggling activities in Sibu, Sarawak.

‘Omak sey oghang sini': IGP Razarudin adopts Kampung Parit Seberang, mum's hometown, shares RM1m for upgrade works
KUALA PILAH, June 15 — A total of RM1 million has been allocated to upgrade Kampung Parit Seberang, which has been selected as the Inspector-General of Police's (IGP) Kampung Angkat Madani (Madani Adopted Village). Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Razarudin Husain said that the village was selected by the Bukit Aman Crime Prevention and Community Safety Department (JPJKK), based on its infrastructure status, which was assessed to be below 50 per cent complete, and in need of special attention. He said that the Kampung Parit Seberang Village Development and Security Committee (JPKK) encompasses three villages – Kampung Parit Mainau, Kampung Parit Mungkal and Kampung Parit Istana – covering a total area of 3.3 square kilometres. 'I would like to share that RM1 million has been allocated, through the Ministry of Finance, to support the entire initiative to upgrade the village, not to mention, omak sey oghang sini (my mother is from here),' he said. He added that, beyond narrowing the development gap in basic infrastructure between rural and urban areas, the programme aims to deliver high-quality community services, through collaboration between ministries, departments, agencies, and public universities. He said this at the IGP's Madani Adopted Village community programme, held in Kampung Parit Seberang, which was also attended by state senior executive councillor, Datuk Seri Jalaluddin Alias, here, today. Razarudin said the proposed upgrade projects include improvements to buildings, landscaping and fencing around the Kampung Parit Seberang surau, road repairs and resurfacing, refurbishment of the Kampung Parit Seberang community hall, and the installation of 20 solar-powered street lights throughout the village. He added that the upgrading works are being closely monitored by the Bukit Aman JPJKK and the Kuala Pilah district police headquarters (IPD), with the aim of ensuring that all improvements are implemented with good governance. 'I have high hopes that this government initiative will be put to good use, for the comfort and well-being of the local community,' he said. Meanwhile, Kampung Parit Seberang JPKK chairman Hasnan Abd Malek, 55, expressed his gratitude to the government for selecting the village as the IGP's Madani Adopted Village. 'This selection is a great advantage in our aim to achieve zero crime. Alhamdulillah, it will bring many benefits to the villagers, especially in terms of security, as there will now be regular police patrols in the village,' he said. — Bernama
